One has to be careful regarding new year remember Rafflesbear 50th bithday party at Otford cancelled due to snow so watch out. we had a great time that evening in Eltham but a lot of folk were snowed in due to icy roads and blizard conditions. You couldnt put your foot in front of another through fear of falling arse over head,
Regards Pierre

I don't think that he'll be doing it at the next folk day. It could be early next year and a bit cold in The Cray. But who knows ?

Excellent video record of the day. Also, it was good to see a bit of duck racing. For the record, we have a radio headset (untried) that we could use for the commentary. Races will have to be slotted in between performers though.

In fact Rob, the leftovers are working in Mick's favour as he now has the opportunity to see how guest beers would go in his normal trade.

From what I have seen yesterday lunchtime and evening, the case for it is conclusive.

Don: Had a chat with Mick tonight, so, straight from the horse's mouth, he was well pleased with Saturday. He said he did well, and wants more of the same, which is exactly what Sue, Raffles, and myself plan to give him.

That's great to hear, Don. I hoped that would be the case, but was worried by overhearing the bar staff person's comment! Really glad that Mick was happy with the day.

I agree with you on the PA Pete. From where I stood, bleeding in the river, you and Ian sounded really good. I think we had in the region of 70 people by the evening, bustling and busy but not overcrowded

You didn't know I had one last trick up my sleeve to take the limelight away from you did you??!!!!

ian and i seem to have been performing as a backdrop for a drama!a good selection of eats there.ians guests and mine availed themselves of such.ithink overcrowding was expected but in the event i would say it was a good turnout in the afternoon for a new/small event.PA definately helps enrich the voice and bring out the nuances.

I didn't try the Gravesend Shrimper, but the Alton's Pride was delicious (if one can say that about a beer). £2.75 is extremely cheap compared to a lot of pub prices. I know that Pierre Le C is working tonight, so don't expect Mick to run out of beer.

Mick got in 3 barrels of Gravesend Shrimper and 3 of Altons Pride and sold one and a half of each.

I was in there lunchtime today and the Altons Pride was going well. Mick was apologising to his customers that it cost 50p a pint more than the Courage Best but at £2.75 nobody was batting an eyelid, indeed they were coming back for more - it's still considerably cheaper than his lagers.

I think he has taken his Courage Best off until these have gone but I spoke to him and he is considering taking on a guest beer from time to time.

He would like more freedom to do things like this but appears to be bound in part by his bosses, the Seven Stars is part of a small group of pubs which includes the Railway Tavern in Bexley

As Foots Cray is mainly industrial it is his lunchtime trade that causes him the greatest concern because of the empty industrial units around and the thousands of people who used to work there who are no longer around to buy lunches

We can, of course, see if we can help him out tonight.....

It certainly seemed well attended, and everyone had a great time. BUT do we know yet whether Mick was pleased with the turnout/ sprend per person? I heard someone (one of the bar staff) saying that they thought he might have lost money as he'd got in "3 barrels of real ale, and there's no way we'll shift it all tonight".

Note that this wasn't someone quoting Mick, but someone giving their own opinion. While everyone having fun is one measure of success, the real measure of success is whether it was worth it enough for Mick to want to host another next year!

Don- Foots Cray is mostly industry now - that's why we have to keep the pub going. It is under threat of closure in two years time, as it's on prime industrial land, I guess. I think people came from The Crays in general. There were a couple from Belvedere who won the white wine. I dropped it into them yesterday. They saw the event in the News Shopper, and said that they will come along more often.

Sue, what's the name of the local paper which covered the event, and do they have a website?

I'm hoping to get some pics of the outside early session.

I still can't quite be;lieve how well that went. The pub was packed from about 2pm, and I didn't know there were that many people in Footscray.

I had a ball, and I'm looking forward to Nov 6th, when I should be bringing some new material.

PS: And I loved the "Wild Hunt" Bedlam Morris. When I've seen Morris dancing in the past it's often seemed a bit "twee"...this lot were anything but twee. Really enjoyed watching them, and I'm glad RB got back in time for their last set. I've got videos of their second set....and permission from the Squire to upload them to YouTube (once I've got them off my phone).

PLC: I recall that excellent helper from the pub who instructed you to lie on the wall and keep you leg up in the air?
You put your leg up in the air and fell off the wall.

Yeah... there was nearly another accident then...I was laughing so much than I nearly fell in the river!!!

BUT for the first time ever my car first aid kit got some use. Amazing that there were 3 first aid kits there within seconds. But no steri-strips in any of them.

RB: The best bit was explaining to them at the hospital when they asked how it happened -
Well we were racing ducks in the River Cray. I was standing at the finish line in the middle of the river to catch the ducks as they came past.....

I wish I'd been a fly on the wall in the treatment room!

Seriously, it was a great event. I hope enough people turned up for Mick to have made a bit of something for his hosting efforts. The place seemed quite crowded for a good chunk of the day, so hopefully he did OK out of it.

First and foremost.
I would like to thank Rafflesbearfoot for his excellent job of advertising this event which was so wonderfully successful. because of the painstaking efforts he put into this event with the help of the Crayside folk committee.

To Sue and Trevor who kept everything in order has only T.D.L. can?
To a wonderful selection of singers musicians who made this event work like clock work
to thanks to Pigs Ear and earlier in the evening Ron Tudor Border who rounded the evening off so wonderfully well.

I do not think I can recall such a excellent 1st event get off to such a cracking start.
I returned home this evening having had such a perfect day.
has Lou Read would say?

FINALLY. The river incident.
I hope Rafflesbearfoot that your foot heals soon.I have never seen such a bloody palaver in all me born days?
"You....."Cavorting about in a river?

I was watching the Duck racing with great enjoyment?
I turn me back for 2 seconds and its like a ................................? 'A jAWS movie"?
("Jaws 5 "The Cray attacks)
Claret everywhere. i COULDN'T BELIEVE ME EYES? i was really both shocked and stunned. Truely?

I recall that excellent helper from the pub who instructed you to lie on the wall and keep you leg up in the air?
You put your leg up in the air and fell off the wall.

But she did bandage your foot bless her and I said to her afterwards on your behalf Rafflesbear Thanks and brought her a drink.

Then when you get back from hospital after having had your foot sawn back on. having had to endure Injections for "This "That and the other
Sue proceeds to put 100s and 1000s on this recipe of disaster by plunging her walking stick on your bad foot.
I saw the color drain from your face I did.

I WOULDNT MIND?
but these series of ..........?
Unfortunate events usually happens to me? in a drunken state.
I paced myself after being witness to all the above and has folk noticed and remarked on
"I stayed sober. ish.

Rafflesbear in future whenever I see you "I will say God helpus there,s spmmit a foot in the hope that it will remind you to wear Wellies in future.

The Duke of Wellington invented the Wellington boot after the Muddy battlefield at Waterloo ( That place over the hills and faraway)
In June 1815 in order to keep his feet dry .
"I quote
`'and his Lord"
stood most proud within them?
I suggest you buy a pair and take up the same stance?
Accident happen when one least expect them?

Nice to see Steve Morrison at the event it was a rare treat.
The best and kindest regards to all Pierre,

Absolutely brilliant. A big thank you to everyone who came along, all the star performers, the Wild Hunt Bedlam Morris, the Landlord and his staff, the pub regulars for taking us to their hearts and the singaround musicians and singers and those who manned the sales stand

Also thanks to the staff of Queen Mary's Hospital who got me back in time to see the last Morris set.

A long and wonderful day and if people are to be believed we have gained recruits to our Monday sessions

Absolutely no question that there will be another, the only question is when!

Full details of Crayside Folk, how to get there and the programme for the Festival can be found on our festival website

We look forward to welcoming as many mudcatters as possible and ask you to bring someone new to folk music with you!

Fingerpicking is coming on a bit now....eventually I'll be able to fingerpick and sing at the same time, rather than mainly just strumming as I do now.

Pete, if the weather forecast proves accurate you will be outside and your audience will actually be swollen by those watching the ducks, also we are hoping that there will be so many people that more than one event at a time becomes essential given some of the restricted spaces we are operating in. Simultaneous events are common at festivals and enable us to cater for all sorts.

The ducks, as you rightly say, are a just a novelty

I heard a rumour that the great world famous (in Eltham) Dave Kennington may be playing at the festival. Is this true, or just one of those ubfounded rumours that usually start in the lead up to such an event. I told my wife that it was highly unlikely that a fledgling venture such as Crayside Folk could even afford such a mega star! Another rumour is that it is a Dave Kennington impersonator/tribute act that is booked. Please put us out of our misery and confirm which one, if any is appearing. Couldn't see anything on the flyer that I saw in the pub last night. WE may have to book a larger coach!

Actually you don't have to rely on Mudcat as we have a facebook group where we also display photographs of our jolly band of followers (and Sticky) and also our information packed website

But the best way of finding out what is going on is to come down and see us at one of our events - there are plenty to choose from

A good one to start with would be our one day festival on Saturday October 9th at which you would be more than welcome

If you enjoy that, you could then then you would be more than welcome to come along on Monday evenings for our regular singarounds which have proved very popular

You may even be tempted to put your name down for one of the slots at the 'Crayside Live' open mike sessions which will be starting on November 6th because we like what you do and we would be more than happy to have you along as we need your enthusiasm and humour to stop us becoming miserable (and the shirts in case the lights fail)

So you see we have probably struck the balance about right with Mudcat and there is probably no need for more threads..... yet :-)

Went round today putting posters in shop windows in Sidcup and Foots Cray.

Well received, some poeple sounded as though they might be interested in coming along. So what DO we do if 400 people turn up?

1 - open the gates to the car park
2 - construct a bridge across the river on to the grassy area opposite

It's not such a problem if only ten people turn up, we can just pack up and go home. Nothing to go on for numbers but we'll soon know!

One thing for sure I'm dead chuffed at the line-up we've got

Duck racing - "Ah, so one's called Reg, one's called Ron, what of the remaining four?"

OK - they will be named
Reggie
Ronnie
Charlie
Jimmy
Robbie
Ricky

To start the race they must be 'passively released' by resting the palm of the hand on the bridge parapet at the time of letting go - this is to avoid injury to the ducks caused by being hurled down the river to gain an advantage.

I have been paddling in the Cray today to test the Duck Racing.

It works! The ducks have to be dropped on the downstream side of the bridge otherwise they get stuck in the standing wave of the weir. There is overtaking and it is easily possible to get to the finish line from the start before the ducks arrive. It is also possible to pluck the ducks from the water at the end of the race before they disappear into the distance.

So, the concept is that we have six differently coloured plastic ducks that you hire for £1 to enter a race. You take these to the bridge and on the word of command drop them into the Cray. The ducks float downstream to the finish line. The winner gets £5 and £1 goes to Crayside Folk Club funds!

It's gone very quiet on this thread since I asked for helpers. We can't do it all ourselves, there's too much going on ! We now have a Morris side willing to come and dance for us. Which one ? Look on the website, the info should be up soon.

We need some volunteers from amongst our regulars to help man the sales stand, help with duck marshalling (plastic ones), and other jobs. Any takers?

I've seen the photofits, aside from being all different colours they are identical. Is this a lineup? What's the crime ? They should each have a name or number. If there has been mallard of forethought, they should have numbers.

We have plans for Duck racing during the day.

The ancient sport which has more recently acquired the name of Pooh Sticks will be conducted with plastic ducks, launched from the south side of the bridge over the Cray the finish line will be at the garden of the Seven Stars.

I am sure we can run to prizes for the winners - what do you think a plastic duck would like?

I quote from Richard Bridge's earlier posting

"Wee and a Shave".

It isn't about bel canto.
We are indeed back from Sidmouth!
Shame you missed our performance at Dukes Richard, we had 'em rockin' to Wee and A Shave, they were singing and clapping, and were probably very drunk. We ended a 40 minute slot at The Hub with it too. We had to use a lot of ingenuity as no drumming was allowed whilst the concert was on. We sang "Road Kill Cafe"... it seemed apt with all the food concessions surrounding us, and there was actually a chap from Market Harborough in our audience.

There are a number of slots to showcase the talents of our regulars which I sincerely hope will include not only the superb Dave Kenningham but also yourself as well Woodsie! Besides which together you make a terrific double act

and well said Richard, couldn't agree more. Incidentally, it would be nice to think we might see you in the suburbs sometime?

and

Serious? No. Their light hearted and humourous parodies are superb - see

Thieves of Peckham Rye

and

Roadkill Cafe

Like most others I wondered what was happening when I first saw them but relax and go with the flow and you've got two warm and entertaining people

And if you still can't see it there's nine hours of entertainment before their slot!

Although we only started our sessions in the Seven Stars, Foots Cray near Sidcup, Kent at the end of June, we shall be running a one-day mini festival on October 9th starting at 12.30 and going through to closing time. Entry is free

We are planning a mixture of the following

Showcase for our excellent regulars
Guest performers
Ample opportunity for singarounds and jamming for all
Morris dancing

There is a real ale bar and the landlord has promised us guest beers
Snacks available lunchtime and early evening

The Seven Stars has a large car park and excellent bus connections from most of South-east London / North-west Kent, plus direct bus connections from a number of local stations. Buses run late

Full details of Crayside Folk, how to get there and the provisional programme for the Festival can be found on our website - see Crayside Festival

We look forward to welcoming as many mudcatters as possible and invite you to bring someone new to folk music with you!
