Had cataract surgery one year ago (both eyes) and, thanx to variable-focus implants, I not wearing glasses for the first time in 75 years.

have had cataract surgery and implants in both eyes...plus YAG laser treatment to breakup 'secondary membrane'....which means that sometimes, that cataract tissue attempts to re-grow.


But even with the surgery, my old eyes often appreciate bigger and 'nicer' fonts, and I have several tricks, including the simple ctrl + thing in Firefox (it's just + in Opera). This gets your general text made larger by making everything on the screen larger. In Firefox, you can go to tools-> options-> content-> fonts & colors ..and choose a specific font AND its default size, which means that, if your computer has bold as an option for various fonts, you can specify that also. (usually a nice 'comfy' font (I use Palatino Linotype) and size is enough.

Now in Opera,(tools-> preferences-> advanced-> fonts)you can do even more. You can specify which fonts & sizes to use in various parts of the page [titles, various headers, email...etc.] This could be helpful if one often reads pages where the defaults are strange settings...or if you just like experimenting. {setting default colors to 'different' is possible, but that can get weird!)

Yeah, looks like cataracts here, too. When I was having my eyes examined for new glasses, my ophthalmologist said that he could detect the very beginnings of cataracts. Although, he said, I probably wouldn't have to worry about it for ten or fifteen years. But that was a good twenty years ago. Some years later, I had my eyes checked again by his son, who had taken over the practice when his father retired. I mentioned the possibility of cataracts; he checked, and said that he couldn't really see any signs of such. So, whoopee!!

But I know my eyes have deteriorated over the years, and last time I had my eyes checked (new glasses again, different ophthalmologist), he said yes, definitely, and that I would probably have to do something about them in a year or two.

Symptoms:   not double vision, but things at a distance have a sort of fuzzy, extra edge. And—there is one small, red light (LED) on the front of the telephone/television/internet cable box about eight feet across the room from me right now, and with my glasses off, it turns into six small red lights in a sort of circle. Also, with my glasses off, it's a bit like looking at the world through a dirty window.

All the signs, I'm afraid. But, wotthehell! I was 79 on my last birthday!

Definitely a candidate for the Large Print Edition.

Ctrl in combination with scrolling the mouse wheel will zoom you in and out as well

Sorry to hear about your cataracts. I hope everything goes OK for you.

I have just been told only two weeks ago that I will need surgery in about a year as my cataracts are getting worse.

So Iwill need to be aware of all the things you have so kindly explained for me.

I have been searching these out since I will be having cataract surgery soon. On firefox, use control +. There is also a setting to make the fonts in the threads bigger - let's see whether I can find it again - tools -> options -> content-> fonts.

Win 7 has a magnifier under control panel, accessibility, appearance or some such path). It is somewhat awkward to use - a 3x5 rectangle that follows your mouse and makes everything double size.

Making messages bigger on Outlook was even worse - the font size setting are nested about 5 screens in and I have not yet found one to make the titles in the inbox big enough to read easily. Anyone know how to do this?

You might want to change the font settings back to too small. then ctrl/+ until you can read the font.

hi

I have just bought a new laptop with windows 7 as OS.

I have downloaded Mozilla firefox as my browser. I have adjusted the text to suit my tired old eyes.
However the text in the main parts of the page increases while the text in the other parts of the screens reduces the text.

So in the box where I type this message I have very small text while in the main document it is quite large now.

This new laptop is a much bigger screen than my other one but the type is smaller in this message box.

Help Anyone??
