My Guru Always Said

A few years ago when regatta and folk week clashed I suggested to about 20 mates that we decamp for the sunday afternoon to avoid the crush, I suggested we go to Glaisdale as I had spoken to a landlady there who would welcome us. when I got to the station there were about 50 people there, many of whom I did not know at the time. We had a great session and the following year I was asked if we were going out again, it has since become a "tradition" to catch the train on the sunday of folk week. It is NOT a steam train however, just the normal 12.35ish sunday service, we arrive in Glaisdale about 1.05 leg it up the hill be the Arncliffe Arms (the original pub we used has closed) and have a sing-a-round until we catch the 4.30 train back to Whitby just in time for "evening cocktails" in the Endeavour. The Glaisdale run has now become another fund raiser for the Runswick Bay Rescue Boat, we have a raffle and collection and sing our way round the room.

cheers

raggytash

andymac the singaround at the Rifle Club is free. We do go round with a collection box but if you have a season ticket you woud not be expected to put anything in.The singing order is determined by the organisers thats Mo and I but we go round the room in an anticlockwise direction (because time is our enemy)and that way you have plenty of warning when your turn is coming. As I have written before anything goes it does not have to be folk we are relaxed and we like a bit of fun.Give it a go I am sure you will enjoy it.

Susan you are quie right we do get a bit crowded the trick is to come early we start prompt at 8 or alternately come for the last hour or so after the interval. Some people tend to go of to concerts then so there is a usually a bit more room later. Also because there is a concert on upstairs we are allowed to run on later so we don't have the closing time type presure.

Hils - no, you won't need a ticket for the singarounds, but they can get very crowded. You don't need a ticket for an afternoon at the Dolphin in Robin Hood's Bay either!

We'll be around from Monday - Wednesday but only fringing. Are any of the singarounds mentioned above ticket-only?

Joe - There seemed to be more room at the Plough - maybe your session is just getting more popular, so it is more crowded. We'll try to stop in a couple of times. You called us "our American friends"

Depends which one you are at, the official one's have someone to "organise" the sessions and people go round the room (or not) at the discretion of the organiser, others like the Fleece or Black Horse you just jump in, there is an unwritten rule that you don't hog the songs but apart from that .... Other fringe sessions like the Station and the First In Last Out will have nominated someone to "organise" things.

We're on our way to Whitby for the first time this year but don't know how the singarounds etc run. Do you pay to get in, are they free? Is it first come first served in terms of entry and for who sings?

We've decided for flexibility reasons to buy a full ticket and a weekend one, and will pay for other tickets/events as they crop up but it would be good to know the general etiquette.

I've sent off for a programme but it hasn't appeared yet, so please don't say "look at the programme"!

Andy

Hi Susan the thing is about the Rifle Club we do have fourty seats which is more than we ever had at The Plough in fact we had to try and pinch stools from downstaira there and they did not like it. The fourty number seems ok for a singaround when most of the people who come sing and it does mean that anyone who stays the whole evening gets at least two songs. were there anymore we would find ourselves missing people out which we hate doing.

All the best Joe Nicholson

There are official sing-a-rounds sessions at various times in the Rifle Club, Conservative Club, Friendship and Endeavour, I feel sure there will also be unofficial sessions in the Friendship, Endeavour, Black Horse, Fleece, Middle Earth, Bottom House and possibly other venues as well.

Cheers

I think crowds come with the territory anywhere during folk week. We will try to get up to the Rifle club and Endeavour and any other sings we find:)

Maggie and I will be running the evening sessions in the Endeavour this year. My very good friend the great big fat bloke with the big gob (the inestimable Mick McGarry - known here as Ossonflags) is at the time of writing unlikely to be attending this year, but I'm sure we will have equally great times.

I wish you had a bigger room, Joe. The state of crowding in that room in the Rifle Club is one reason we have not been to your singarounds often in the last trip or two.

We shall be there every night starting at eight o clock.Everyone is welcome Singers, Musicians, Poets,Catters, Joe, Susan, Max, Children (with Mum and or Dad, Uncle Tom (oops sorry got carried away there) Anything goes it does not have to be folk we like a bit of fun. We go round the room but we do request that intro's are kept short so we can get every one in.The Rifle Club is a very friendly venue (they have made us very welcome since we were evicted from The Plough.
