Subject: FranK Christiann underrated guitarist
From: GUEST,Bluesman James

I am writing this thread to call attention to one of the worlds most under rated guitarists in the World - Frank Christian
Frank Christian is a finger style par excellence who can play anything from Reverend Gary Davis to Andres Segovia to Wes Montgomery. He is a master of the Merle Travis - Alternating Bass Style which he applies to Jazz standards (not an easy feat)
He is a also a very dedicated teacher.
His brief "claim to fame" is his song "Three Flights Up" with Nancy Griffin. There were touring together but because Frank is living in NYC and Nancy is based in Nashville, it was a road manager's nightmare as Frank Put it so it did not last
Frank came on the scene in the early mid 80's where he was part of the "Fast Folk" Speak Easy scene with Christine Lavin, the late Tom Intondi etc.
That scene, like the 60's folk revival is no more as most of the clubs are gone and mostly "tip jar" gigs in the East Village and Brooklyn.
It is disturbing that a man of Frank's talent and ability is struggling. I am a guitarist- not a master but I know the instrument and believe me, Frank is up there with Tuck Andres and Amos Garrett
(two of the greatest guitar players in the world)
I am putting this out there in an effort to call attention to this man's talent as both teacher and performer (he is accepting students and he works hard to get his points across)
I would appreciate any comments and suggestions Some of you here must have heard and/or seen Frank.Thank you

Just read Christine Lavin's awesome new autobiography, "Cold Pizza For Breakfast: A Mem-Wha??" and couldn't stop laughing. It's a fun read with a who's who of Folk and entertainment royalty along with real people too.   Available now direct from the publisher www.tellmepress.com and Amazon, B&N, and where ever books are sold.

Check out tour dates on www.christinelavin.com

I am assuming that GUEST Mrs Crotty was trying to post news of Frank Christian's passing ...he died yesterday.

He is surely deserving of an OBIT thread ...

Frank died on December 24, 2012 from pneumonia, which many of his friends think could have been cured had he had health care. Phenomenal guitar player.

Thanks for posting that, Stephen. It's one of those clips that gets better the more you listen. He pulls all those elements that the original poster listed into a sound of his own. His musical ideas are well developed and polished, and his arrangements are full and solid, and his stuff is a pleasure to listen to. And I just realized I should be writing all this in the past tense. So sad what happened...
