It's been months since I've visited Mudcat. Feels good to be looking at the threads again.

I want to play a song for my 9th grades, one I have on tape but I'm uncertain about a one word near the opening and I don't know the writer or singer. Probably the same female person. I recorded it off the radio in 1994:

"Someone waits for me"

Somewhere along the road someone waits for me
Beyond these present storm black ___________ waiting patiently.

Thanks to the three of you who replied. It's now 8pm, 5 hours after I posted the thread. Great replies, with all the facts. I'm xeroxing your replies on the lyric sheet which I'll hand out to my students tomorrow. I'm trying to get the words for the song Somewhere along the road, which I thought was sung by Kate Rusby, but John McCusker assured me at a concert that it was Cathy Ryan (is it a C or a K?) who sang, I think with Kate as harmony vocals. Can anyone help, please? It's a great song.

This is how I used to play it. No idea what key it was in originally, but C worked for me; if you're fingerpicking you'll find most of the melody notes sit easily under the fingers, and there are some nice possibilities for runs in the bass notes. Use a capo to take it up if need be. If C's too high, try it in G (first line would be G D Em C)

Great song - beautiful version of it by Geraldine MacGowan (lives in Doolin) from a wonderful CD with this song as the title; check her website for details. For the Am and F bits try also Am7 and Fmaj7 for added atmosphere.... good luck with the song. Geraldine's version of Richard Thompson's "Dimming of the Day" is as good as it gets, and there's a cracking version also of "Lark in the Morning" - great CD

I'm pretty sure the second line starts with the word "Someone" instead of "Somebody" -- and it scans better that way, too.

(Listening to the Geraldine McGowan clip confirms what I remember from hearing Maddy Prior sing it.)

By the way, it sounds as though it's written about the afterlife, but I believe Rick Kemp wrote it for Maddy while he was waiting (and worrying) for her to arrive home from a car trip through a bad storm. So "somewhere along the road" was actually home, and "someone" was hubby.

This is a most beautiful song and I have been fortunate to hear this song on many occasions by local singers in Lincolnshire.

Lucy Wright & Paul Young did a lovely version of this and I don't think it was ever recorded.

Likewise Jane Kitchen also did an equally lovely version of it and started to do a duo version of it with John Blanks (or is my memory failing me). Again to my knowledge never recorded onto CD.

When they sung this song, I could never join in as I was always choked up becuase of the sheer beauty of it.

Yes definitely Rick Kemp and not Tim Hart.
I'd always wondered if the song was about a specific event or loss, so I ventured to ask Maddy recently: her answer "Oh I think Rick was in a bit of a spiritual phase when he wrote it".
She did not relate it to anything specific. I have sung it at a funeral wake.
One of the loveliest cover versions is by Scottish group Sangsters, which is where I first heard the song.

I listened to a number of recordings, and it seems to me that Mrs. Duck has the lyrics that are closest to what's sung. I didn't hear a single recording with "somebody waits for me," but that's what most people have posted. I found a recording by Rick Kemp, John Kirkpatrick, and Ian Kellet. One would think those lyrics should be definitive....and those are almost exactly the lyrics on the Kemp/Kirkpatrick/Kellet recording.
I think Maddy Prior departs in one place and sings "Raise your eyes and see my world," but I might be hearing her wrong. Whatever the case, I like the Maddy Prior and the Silly Sisters recordings best. Who's singing lead on the Silly Sisters recording?

I've mentioned this above, but to add greater detail:

The song origin story that I heard (from Maddy in concert in San Francisco) was that Rick wrote it for her to distract himself from worry as he waited for her to arrive from a gig late one stormy night. The idea, I understood, was that he wanted the knowledge that he (Rick) was waiting for her at home to be a talisman for her as she navigated the dangerous country roads.

That could have been just a stage story, of course, and yet I rather like seeing the song as more connected with this world and not so much the next.

There are a couple of other versions on YouTube. All sing "Someone", so why do people persist in putting "Somebody" when they post the lyrics. Apart from anything else, "Someone" scans better.

A terrific song, that is open enough in its meaning to allow people to read their own interpretations into it, and get a lot out.

I cannot imagine why someone would be changed to somebody, which truly doesn't scan, though of course you can force it. Probably a transcription error originally, then perpetuated through performance (the folk process, as some would style it)

Thanks to Skipy for the u-tube lead (which works better if spelled Nutbeem, btw) a brave performance which I remember seeing on the box at the time. The reminder was worth it.

Like Joe, I like the recording on No More to the Dance the best of the bunch I have heard, but there seem to be several more to hear.

Another error that has crept in and shown in various versions on this thread, is
"Tomorrow will BE a new sunrise"
The word is BRING (makes more sense too!) and is shown correctly in Mrs Duck's posting of 2000, which was given the definitive lyrics award by Joe Offer at that time.
