Subject: Song search: 'Someone waits for me' From: GUEST,Mrbisok@aol Date: 17 Sep 00 - 11:39 AM It's been months since I've visited Mudcat. Feels good to be looking at the threads again. I want to play a song for my 9th grades, one I have on tape but I'm uncertain about a one word near the opening and I don't know the writer or singer. Probably the same female person. I recorded it off the radio in 1994: "Someone waits for me"
Somewhere along the road someone waits for me I really would appreciate first of all the singer/songwriter. -- Thanks |
Subject: RE: Song search: 'Someone waits for me' From: GUEST,Kernow Jon Date: 17 Sep 00 - 01:25 PM Singer Maddy Prior Author Rick Kemp The song is called Somewhere Along The Road I'm sure it's on the Forum but I can't get the search to work at the moment. The verse you are looking for is:-

Subject: Lyr Add: SOMEWHERE ALONG THE ROAD (Rick Kemp) From: Mrs.Duck Date: 17 Sep 00 - 02:15 PM SOMEWHERE ALONG THE ROAD (Rick Kemp) Somewhere along the road Someone waits for me Beyond these present storms that blow Waiting patiently No secrets held in an open heart A spirit that soars over mountains Somewhere along the road Someone waits for me
Somehow a guiding light
Sometime when winds are still This is how I do it. It's one of my favourites and has a lot of sentimental meaning for me so I am pleased someone else is going to do it too.

Great replies, with all the facts. I'm xeroxing your replies on the lyric sheet which I'll hand out to my students tomorrow. The following from Mrs. Duck was so nice: "It's one of my favorites... so I'm pleased someone else is going to do it too." -- 35 kids age 14-18 will read your comments tomorrow afternoon. Thanks again. |
Subject: Somewhere along the road From: GUEST,patricia.barnett@talk21.com Date: 10 Mar 02 - 12:14 PM I'm trying to get the words for the song Somewhere along the road, which I thought was sung by Kate Rusby, but John McCusker assured me at a concert that it was Cathy Ryan (is it a C or a K?) who sang, I think with Kate as harmony vocals. Can anyone help, please? It's a great song. |

Subject: Lyr Add: ALONG THE ROAD (Dan Fogelberg) From: Steve-o Date: 14 Mar 02 - 04:24 PM If the one you're looking for is NOT the one found in the clickys above, here is another. It's a GREAT song...I learned it from a not-too-old Doc Watson album. ALONG THE ROAD Written by Dan Fogelberg Joy at the start, fear in the journey, Joy in the coming home A part of the heart gets lost in the learning Somewhere along the road Along the road your paths may wander A pilgrim's faith may fade But absence makes the heart grow fonder When darkness hides the trail INSTRU. BREAK Cursing the quest, courting disaster, Measureless nights for both Moments of rest and glimpses of laughter Are treasures along the road When the road gets rough your steps may stumble And your thoughts may start to stray But through it all a heart held humble Will level and light your way Joy at the start, fear in the journey, Joy in the coming home A part of the heart is lost in the learning Somewhere along the road A part of the heart is lost in the learning Somewhere along the road added --- ---Jeff (PA)--- |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: M. Prior: Somewhere Along the Road From: Mountain Dog Date: 03 Jul 02 - 06:45 PM Dear Masato, Many thanks. I've long been a fan of Steeleye Span and its constituent musicians, so the site you provided the link to is a real treasure. We were just recently given a copy of Maddy's "Year" as a gift. What a great CD! Again, thank you for your timely and generous response. |

Subject: Chords Add: SOMEWHERE ALONG THE ROAD (Rick Kemp) From: GUEST,Jonny Sunshine Date: 11 Oct 07 - 10:28 AM This is how I used to play it. No idea what key it was in originally, but C worked for me; if you're fingerpicking you'll find most of the melody notes sit easily under the fingers, and there are some nice possibilities for runs in the bass notes. Use a capo to take it up if need be. If C's too high, try it in G (first line would be G D Em C) Happy playing! C G Am F Somewhere along the road F G C Somebody waits for me C G Am F Beyond these present storms that blow F G C Waiting patiently F C G C No secrets held in an open heart F C C G A spirit that soars over mountains C G Am F Somewhere along the road F G C Somebody waits for me |

Subject: RE: Chord Req: Somewhere along the road From: Lowden Jameswright Date: 11 Oct 07 - 12:27 PM Great song - beautiful version of it by Geraldine MacGowan (lives in Doolin) from a wonderful CD with this song as the title; check her website for details. For the Am and F bits try also Am7 and Fmaj7 for added atmosphere.... good luck with the song. Geraldine's version of Richard Thompson's "Dimming of the Day" is as good as it gets, and there's a cracking version also of "Lark in the Morning" - great CD |

Subject: RE: Chord Req: Somewhere along the road From: ClaireBear Date: 11 Oct 07 - 01:57 PM I'm pretty sure the second line starts with the word "Someone" instead of "Somebody" -- and it scans better that way, too. (Listening to the Geraldine McGowan clip confirms what I remember from hearing Maddy Prior sing it.) By the way, it sounds as though it's written about the afterlife, but I believe Rick Kemp wrote it for Maddy while he was waiting (and worrying) for her to arrive home from a car trip through a bad storm. So "somewhere along the road" was actually home, and "someone" was hubby. |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords ADD: Somewhere Along the Road (Kemp) From: Rasener Date: 11 Oct 07 - 03:18 PM This is a most beautiful song and I have been fortunate to hear this song on many occasions by local singers in Lincolnshire. Lucy Wright & Paul Young did a lovely version of this and I don't think it was ever recorded. Likewise Jane Kitchen also did an equally lovely version of it and started to do a duo version of it with John Blanks (or is my memory failing me). Again to my knowledge never recorded onto CD. When they sung this song, I could never join in as I was always choked up becuase of the sheer beauty of it. |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords ADD: Somewhere Along the Road (Kemp) From: Lowden Jameswright Date: 11 Oct 07 - 04:55 PM Then I hope these Lincolnshire singers will be at the Gainsborough festival next weekend and I get to hear it sung! |

Subject: Chords Add: SOMEWHERE ALONG THE ROAD (Rick Kemp) From: Nick Date: 11 Aug 10 - 01:26 PM I think the original is in C so something like this:
The Am/G may well be a B bass note on the 5th string and a D on the B string just moving down between the Am and the F but it's from memory of the song so may be wrong |
Subject: RE: Chord/Lys req: Somewhere along the road From: Nick Date: 11 Aug 10 - 01:29 PM Error! NOT The Am/G may well be a B bass note on the 5th string and a D on the B string just moving down between the Am and the F but it's from memory of the song so may be wrong BUT The Am/G may well be a G bass note on the 6th string and an open B string just moving down between the Am and the F but it's from memory of the song so may be wrong Is the lyric "Someone waits for" rather than "Somebocby " |

Subject: RE: Chord/Lys req: Somewhere along the road From: Tattie Bogle Date: 11 Aug 10 - 04:19 PM Yes definitely Rick Kemp and not Tim Hart. I'd always wondered if the song was about a specific event or loss, so I ventured to ask Maddy recently: her answer "Oh I think Rick was in a bit of a spiritual phase when he wrote it". She did not relate it to anything specific. I have sung it at a funeral wake. One of the loveliest cover versions is by Scottish group Sangsters, which is where I first heard the song. |

Subject: ADD: Somewhere Along the Road (Rick Kemp) From: Joe Offer Date: 12 Aug 10 - 04:07 AM I listened to a number of recordings, and it seems to me that Mrs. Duck has the lyrics that are closest to what's sung. I didn't hear a single recording with "somebody waits for me," but that's what most people have posted. I found a recording by Rick Kemp, John Kirkpatrick, and Ian Kellet. One would think those lyrics should be definitive....and those are almost exactly the lyrics on the Kemp/Kirkpatrick/Kellet recording. I think Maddy Prior departs in one place and sings "Raise your eyes and see my world," but I might be hearing her wrong. Whatever the case, I like the Maddy Prior and the Silly Sisters recordings best. Who's singing lead on the Silly Sisters recording? -Joe- |
Subject: RE: Chord/Lyr: Somewhere Along the Road (Rick Kemp) From: Don Day Date: 12 Aug 10 - 10:14 AM If it's "No more to the dance" then it is Maddy. |
Subject: RE: Chord/Lyr: Somewhere Along the Road (Rick Kemp) From: Stewie Date: 12 Aug 10 - 07:48 PM Guest above asked for lyrics to Cathie Ryan's recording. She sings the Kemp song as posted by Mr Happy and others. She sings 'someone' rather than 'somebody'. --Stewie. |
Subject: RE: Chord/Lyr: Somewhere Along the Road (Rick Kemp) From: Tattie Bogle Date: 16 Aug 10 - 06:43 PM 6 versions on Itunes, including Mr Kemp himself - all using SOMEONE not SOMEBODY! It is now nearly 10 years since Joe Offer gave Mrs Duck's posting the "definitive lyrics award" (which included "SomeONE"! |
Subject: RE: Chord/Lyr: Somewhere Along the Road (Rick Kemp) From: ClaireBear Date: 16 Aug 10 - 07:24 PM I've mentioned this above, but to add greater detail: The song origin story that I heard (from Maddy in concert in San Francisco) was that Rick wrote it for her to distract himself from worry as he waited for her to arrive from a gig late one stormy night. The idea, I understood, was that he wanted the knowledge that he (Rick) was waiting for her at home to be a talisman for her as she navigated the dangerous country roads. That could have been just a stage story, of course, and yet I rather like seeing the song as more connected with this world and not so much the next. C |
Subject: RE: Chord/Lyr: Somewhere Along the Road (Rick Kemp) From: Tootler Date: 17 Aug 10 - 07:21 PM Maddy Prior singing it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rVblehWofVk and she definitely sings "someone" not "somebody" Cathie Ryan is also on YouTube (She also sings "someone") http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fqQ3cF5K22Q&feature=related There are a couple of other versions on YouTube. All sing "Someone", so why do people persist in putting "Somebody" when they post the lyrics. Apart from anything else, "Someone" scans better. |

Subject: RE: Chord/Lyr: Somewhere Along the Road (Rick Kemp) From: gnomad Date: 19 Aug 10 - 12:39 PM A terrific song, that is open enough in its meaning to allow people to read their own interpretations into it, and get a lot out. I cannot imagine why someone would be changed to somebody, which truly doesn't scan, though of course you can force it. Probably a transcription error originally, then perpetuated through performance (the folk process, as some would style it) Thanks to Skipy for the u-tube lead (which works better if spelled Nutbeem, btw) a brave performance which I remember seeing on the box at the time. The reminder was worth it. Like Joe, I like the recording on No More to the Dance the best of the bunch I have heard, but there seem to be several more to hear. |

Subject: RE: Chord/Lyr: Somewhere Along the Road (Rick Kemp) From: Tattie Bogle Date: 15 Jun 11 - 02:17 PM Another error that has crept in and shown in various versions on this thread, is "Tomorrow will BE a new sunrise" The word is BRING (makes more sense too!) and is shown correctly in Mrs Duck's posting of 2000, which was given the definitive lyrics award by Joe Offer at that time. |
