About a year ago news came through that a second volume of song lyrics were getting published as a companion to RUS. Anyone close enough to those involved to give a progress report???

You oughta' do a thread search on this just for practice, but CONGRATS TO YOU......you've hit TWO of the biggies in your first week. Alright, where's Barry Finn?

Subject: Lyr Add: RISE UP SCREAMING
From: Barry Finn
Date: 19 Aug 99 - 11:36 PM

Hi Spaw, I was staying away but I'm here now that my name got mentioned. Hear tell that there's going to be a recall before it's even out to protect those of us that don't follow the Bible word for word when we/I go to singing sessions, even get yelled at for not singing a half assed version as documented in RUS (the following song explais the meaning of RUS & exposes the abuses & dangers in it's written word.

Rise Up Screaming
Words Barry Finn
Tune: Jack In The Green by Martin Graebe

A pub session or a party is a very strange thing
They're all out of fashion no more do they sing
For they read from a book or copy a tape
They imitate sounds no mortal should make

There's no sound in the kitchen, no sound in the hall
There's a murderous screech that plays off the walls
Where is the music, where are the songs
In the mouths of monsters where no sound belongs

Dead pan they look as they sing in your face
They'll spit out the words and the tunes they'll disgrace
A song will be beat o'r and over to death
And in a round robin they'll resurrect it again

No more will be heard a version that's lost
Or a variant that's rare or two songs were crossed
The borrowing or sharing of a tune or a song
Will be according to the Bible all else will be wrong

And now for the future , it's bleak for the song
No young mortal will dare to carry it on
They'll be none around who without books can sing
Or swap without tapes or rise up singing

From NOT IN THE BOOK by Craig Brandis

The good folk of Sing Out! have done a good turn
A popular songbook has helped people learn;
More people are singing, just take a good look
But cast your net wider than just in the book

I don't thing RUS was ever intended to be a 'hymnal.' I'm happy to say I've never been to a session where people had their noses buried in any song book. I've been places where it was yanked out because someone was trying to remember the third verse to a song, much like I've seen people use the DT. I don't think established sessions would tolerate it. As for new sessions where people aren't all that familiar with folk music, perhaps they only need to learn there's some homework involved - it's not an 'open book' test!

I have a really good joke for you guys. Hang on, it's on page 42 of the Musicians' Joke Book...

Hi Spaw, yes I still very much going to the getaway, already joined & sent in for an all weekend ticket, hopefully a cabin with other Mudcatters.

Hi Jeri, I know you were thinking of coming how's that working out. There's is a singing session local to you where I've seen everyone in the group, except one, read for this bible. & have been told that I wasn't doing it the way it was written on page so & so. A guitarist was stopped mid song because he wasn't playing in the key it was written in even though he couldn't sing in that key. I've gone maybe once a year over the past 5 years in the hopes that it will have changed but it hasn't & I'm not about to rock about I'm not sailing in, it's just that there's so much more. I thought that this was just an isolated occurance but from dicussing this with others it's not uncommon, a pox on that book I say. Oh well.
. Barry

Hi, Barry. Never heard of such a session around here. Yes I'm planning on going to the Getaway. We could convoy from a certain point. Put banners on the cars -'Getaway or Bust.' Too bad we couldn't rent a minivan or something and sing all the way down. Ten bloody hours down there, with the last leg involving the beltway. Eeech!

Uh-oh, just got my very first copy, but I swear I wasn't gonna use it fer a bible! I WAS surprised and a little miffed that the tunes weren't included, though I wondered how they could advertise it the way the do and included all THAT! Living in isolation-Wyoming I'll hafta get most my tunes from my memory banks or right here!

Fergive me?

Yeah, you're forgiven. If you go back to some of the old threads on this, you'll find that the bigger objection is not so much the book, but how it get's used. And that too is a good chunk of Barry's wonderful song...doncha' love it?

The song circle at the East Bay Fickin' and Piddlin' Potlucks is just such an RUS session--the first time I went, it was in the living room of the house (luckily there are lots of other things going on in other rooms, in the yard, the garage, the basement, etc.), and people were sitting in sofas and overstuffed chairs that might have digested them if they stayed any longer; everyone but I had RUS in hand, one old geezer (even older than I) was playing the guitar (sitting in a straight backed chair). I came up from two hours of the bluegrass circle in the basement and played a bit of harmonica along with it--not too loud, mind you: I didn't want to drown out the twenty voices in the circle. Someone picks song, tells page number, several minutes of people trying to find the page and then the song on the page, the guitar player strums a chord and the mumbling begins. I took it for a half hour or so then went looking for blues players. The next one I went to was dominated by a single singer--there were ten or twelve people in the circle but this one woman chose half the songs and a friend of hers chose the other half, for the first one to sing, all of course from RUS. The woman could sing, at least. After an hour of this, people started dropping out and the few who were left started singing without the books and it got pretty good for the half hour before cleanup time.--seed

Hi BSeed, does this happen on every other Fri. evening? A perticular session out your way was one of the first I heard of besides the one in Boston. Barry

Hi, Barry - the East Bay Fiddlin' and Pickin' potlucks happen on the second Sunday afternoon of the month, usually in Oakland or Berkeley or thereabouts. The "Rise Up Singing" song circle is just one of many musical opportunities at the potluck, but it's the only activity there that's suitable for nonmusicians. I think it's important to encourage nonmusicians to participate in our music, and the songbook can help that. It's hard work to keep a bunch of beginners singing on a regular basis, and I have to admit that the results aren't always pretty.
I suppose the music would be better if we'd force those people to throw away their books so they wouldn't know the words and couldn't sing along with us, eh? But wouldn't that be rather snooty of us?

Oh, by the way, the last I heard, the publication of the second volume of Rise Up Singing will be sometime in the year 2000. It was supposed to be 1999, but they didn't make it. Click here for previous threads.
I don't care what the rest of you guys say, I'm going to order a case of 'em as soon as they come out. They ain't perfect, but they help.

I'm with Joe - ANY printed book (or even the Digitrad) could be misused in the ways described above and previously. Fortunately, no 'Catters have started whining "That's not the version in the DT".

In a group of - for lack of a better term - experienced musicians or singers, who can follow whichever version of a song the leader happens to be doing, GREAT! But when you have a room full of people who go to a sing-along twice a year, it really helps to have a guide. The group I'm with feels free to "challenge" RUS, and my copy has so many additions and changes written in the margins it's even harder to read than the way it was printed (which is MY biggest beef with the book)

IMHO, its still the best "guidebook" - with the most "suggestions" in one compact place.

Wrong session Joe, this one was held near Ashbury (sp?) & beginners there (20 yrs ago) never needed a bible to keep them going that was the responsibilty of the not so beginners & they did a good job of it back then, I was very impressed how the flow carried on entising the beginner along to get into more. I'm told that this no longer happens at this session or the one in Boston from yrs back or at a bunch of others now that there is no need. Sorry I'm still a stickler about a group reading songs from the same book though I'm all for bringing along written material to help promt one along. Barry
