Thanks everybody for coming (again). Today was smaller but very good, with excellent contributions from Shanty Jack, among others. A very special weekend.

Dave and I had a great evening (sorry we couldn't make the afternoon or today...I'm sure you're having just as good a time today!! The "audience" as always fascinated me...can't believe that guy missed a meal to listen..still somebody had thrown his teapot over the side!! (....you had to be there!!..) Dave said he particularly liked the singing of "That Scottish lass"....he's never been any good with names ,Hazel!....oh, and I've now got nearly £20 in the lifeboatman!!.and nearly a whole year to go!   ..thanks.
Last time I spoke to Shanty Jack he said he thought the move to july might be permanent..if so then we need to make this weekend thing permanent..with more warning next time we should be able to swell the numbers.
cheers!
geoff

Nice to meet you all this afternoon. Sorry I had to bail out so early, but I was desperate to avoid picking up a ticket from Hull's parking nazis, and I'd had over my allotted 2 hours. I daresay you're all still going strong this evening. Hope the voices/livers hold out.

John

Thanks to all for yesterday afternoon. I really enjoyed myself, some great songs, and I'll even forgive the 'Deano' one (well I suppose I was playing away). Up the City, (Bristol City of course).

Well, fortunately the football prowess doesn't matter. I only 'love' football because it keeps others amused (while I sneak out to play)

My daughter's roof leaks so 'Daddy to the rescue' which fortunately means I'm not needed - (I'd just get in the way and be full of good ideas......)

so I'll see you later! Not sure if I've got much of a voice today - but It'll be great to get back to the Minerva.
Hx

Not as such Geoff. Phil the landlord may put a bit of food on if he can, but as we have no idea of the numbers to expect that could be a bit problematical. You could always bring some packing-up!

That's the plan, Geoff - we reckon to be there 'til closing time as long as there's enough of us. And plenty of us are local so I don't think that will be an issue.

There's just the two events, a singaround in the Brewery and a musicians session in the Boat Room. We're aiming for a 1pm start both afternoons (although that depends on there being enough people there to make a start) and then to keep on playing and singing until Phil wants his pub back in the evening.

Thanks Kitty!

If anyone's looking for overnight accommodation, there are a number of reasonably cheap hotels nearby. I can't give a positive recommendation but the Premier Inn is quite close (seems to be about £69 a single). Slightly further away is the Campanile (£45 a single).

Great idea avoiding the Freedom Festival the following weekend.

See you and maggie in Whitby

The traditional dates for the Hull Shanty Festival (Sea Fever) were always the first weekend in September. This year the Festival was moved to coincide with the return of the Round the World Clipper Race, but many locals have always regarded the September dates as 'Shanty Weekend'. As an additional event, for anyone not wanting to attend the Saturday night concert, we provided a fringe singaround which has come to be known as the Anti-Shanty. Not that we've got anything against shanties at all, but we don't insist on maritime songs as some of the attendees don't have an extensive marimime repetoire. In recent years this has been at the Minerva, a superb historical real ale pub on the Humber Foreshore.

This year Phil Daly, the landlord of the Minerva, suggested that we could have the traditional shanty weekend based at his pub. So we are! There will be a singaround in the old brewery room hosted by Maggie and me. There will be a big musicians session in the boat room. Both of these will last from 1pm(ish) each day until late and we hope to see a few of the people we normally see that weekend, as well as any other singers and musicians who fancy a weekend of do-it-yourself music.
