Subject: RE: sex or trad folk: which is best ??? From: JohnInKansas Date: 15 Aug 10 - 02:25 PM What's the difference? Both require study, thoughtful preparation, and regular practice to learn the skills necessary for adequate performance. Shared with appropriate others, even a mediocre performance can be rewarding, and appreciated. Performed with, or for, someone inappropriate or unappreciative, either can be a total flop. With either, one can choose whether to be the performer or the recipient participating audience, and the variety of forms, styles, methods, techniques, and instruments available are sufficient for life-long enjoyment of them both. Neither is - eventually - much fun if you only know "one song" and try to play it the same at every performance. John |

Subject: RE: sex or trad folk: which is best ??? From: Steve Parkes Date: 15 Aug 10 - 03:05 PM Well now ... I can sing a song and then sing another one straight away; I can do this for half an hour or more at a time, and all I need is the odd glass of water; after a short rest I can do it all again. I can sing by myself or with any number of others in front of any number of people ... Oh, and my wife doesn't mind a bit. |

Subject: RE: sex or trad folk: which is best ??? From: JohnInKansas Date: 15 Aug 10 - 10:21 PM To paraphrase the famous comic who's name I've forgotten: Lots of other interests can be made part of one's sexual activities. It used to bother me when my wife laughted while we were having sex - - but since she's insisted she wasn't laughing at me I seldom even bother to ask what she's reading when it happens now. John |

Subject: RE: sex or trad folk: which is best ??? From: Valmai Goodyear Date: 16 Aug 10 - 02:34 AM I suppose trad folk is a bit like an STD: once you've caught it, it makes you unwelcome in some social circles and you keep getting the urge to pass it on. Valmai (Lewes) |

Oh, and my wife doesn't mind a bit. Well mine does! The minute I start, either by myself or with one or more partners, she gets the hump. Now, I have to make sure she's out of the house before any of my music partners can sneak round for a "quickie". |

Subject: RE: sex or trad folk: which is best ??? From: Mingulay Date: 17 Aug 10 - 08:00 PM Having given some thought to this question, I can state quite categorically that there is no distinction. There is, however, a serious question of etiquette involved in both scenarios which is, does one continue to hold ones tankard of ale whilst 'performing' or does one place it in a safe but convenient position so that the thirst may be quenched when required during the 'performance'? Answers on a postcard please to the usual address. |
Subject: RE: sex or trad folk: which is best ??? From: John on the Sunset Coast Date: 17 Aug 10 - 08:21 PM Actual, I think both at the same time. We sing the start of the chorus to a now non-politically correct SC Foster song at the appropriate time. |

Subject: RE: sex or trad folk: which is best ??? From: JohnInKansas Date: 18 Aug 10 - 05:45 AM If it is necessary to distinguish "trad folk" from (implied) other kinds of folk, it would seem necessary, to be fair, to select just one (or a few) kinds of sex so that approximately equal domains and ranges of performance be compared on both sides of the discussion. I'm not sure whether "trad" folk have different knowledge and experience of the full range of "sex" than would be found in a broader and more inclusive group(?) of folk exemplars, but the implication that discussion is open to all kinds of "sex" seems to place an imbalance of confusions on the two sides of the debate. If only trad folk are accepted, only narrow understanding of the other side is to be expected, while the all-inclusive "sex" side is bound to be completely at a loss even to define "what is sex?". Although comments thus far have been thoughtful and constructive, without more specific definition of the terms and limits the entire debate might collapse into frivolous s.a. quips and retorts, rather than the serious and considered conversation that might lead to understanding on both sides - which certainly would be a shame when so much progress has already appeared. John |
Subject: RE: sex or trad folk: which is best ??? From: TheSnail Date: 18 Aug 10 - 06:01 AM Valmai has stolen my punch line. The first two lines of the chorus of Hard Times are more appropriate to the period after the climax of the performance - "Tis the song, the sigh of the weary, Hard Times, hard times, come again no more" |
Subject: RE: sex or trad folk: which is best ??? From: Valmai Goodyear Date: 18 Aug 10 - 06:15 AM Terribly sorry, Bryan. Nicking someone's punch line is unforgivable. Apologies to J in K if you were working up to that one as well, but thank you for your measured and thoughtful comments immediately above. Valmai |

Subject: RE: sex or trad folk: which is best ??? From: LadyJean Date: 20 Aug 10 - 12:43 AM There's a wonderful song that says Music, Sex and Cookies make the world go round. I'm inclined to agree. The song ends with narrator having been dumped by his girl, but discovering he has an unopened bag of cookies and a new record (That rather dates things.) and two out of three ain't bad. |
