They DO harmonize nicely.

I'll join you for a stiff one of any kind. I lost my Velma Tuesday morning and I'm very much in need of strong drink. We had 48 wonderful years together and I miss her terribly.

Ahh, Doug, I'm so sorry. Let us set up a round around and one more glass -- at the empty place at the table next to you -- for Velma. What would she have liked? And would you like us to sing something for you or her?
Blessings,
Barbara

Thanks Mick for getting us all out of Mudcat Tavern 7! That infernal graphic was locking my computer up every time. Hope everyone made it to the new location, as we had very little warning.

*softly - almost too quietly to be heard*

The day is not quite over
But I fear that I must sleep
Now I must leave the party
But I beg you, love, "Don't weep."

I've danced to fiddle music
and I've sung the songs we share
and I leave you now amongst the hands
of friends who truly care

When your're feeling lonely
Remember all the hours
That we have shared together
Amongst lifes brightest flowers

Just hold me in your memory
As I'll hold you in mine
And I promise I'll be waiting
That we'll meet another time

Doug, one disadvantage of cyberspace is that while there is RealAudio, no one seems to have invented RealDrink. It has something to do with electricity and streaming technology. But I am sure that if we were a real tavern and not a virtual one, you would be subject to more hospitality than you could handle, and more good music than one can imagine. This strange medium gives us both the ability to come close to people, and to be conscious at exactly the same moment of how presumptuous it is to intrude, and how little this all is, really. It is a little like when people buy you a drink: a gesture, nothing more, that means to mean much more. And (thanks to Max, LEJ and bbc and the rest) this little convivial tavern space, which is more of a mad circus than anything else, is a bit of our gesture towards the sometime humourousness of things, and a bit of defiance in its own way, for what is drink if not defiance of sorrow (as the Irish put it). Which (to borrow a phrase from Frank Hamilton) is the milk run way of saying, if I could, I would at the least buy you a drink, and could someone out there roll out a bit of defiance in the form of a joke or a happy song?
yours, Peter T.

Stop me if you've heard this...

An orchestra was putting on a performance of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. There were two bass players who had a part in the first movement, and a part in the finale', but nothing in between. They requested permission from the conductor to leave the stage during the long period of inactivity, and were granted their request. At the end of the first movement, they exited the stage, and one said to the other "let's go across the street for a minute and grab a drink." They had one, then another, and finally one says "hadn't we better get back? They'll be getting close to the end." The other says "oh, don't worry. I've tied the last two pages of the conductor's sheet music together with string."

The two bassists finally returned to the auditorium, to see the conductor conducting with one hand while frantically trying to untie the string with the other. The audience were on the edge of their seats with tension. After all, it was the bottom of the Ninth, the score was tied, and the bassists were loaded.

Lej, that is a crack up! I love that kind of humor- can you tell I 've already had a few tonight? I so seldom drink, and tonight I had two of these things they call Long Island Iced Tea. I'm pretty toasty from whatever is in them.

Life is funny and then you end up in the mudcat tavern!

Hi, there, MAG, nice to see you and thanks! Diet coke is abot my speed today, too. Just got done mucking out my office and moving my jewelry making table and supplies into the same room, so now everything is at my fingertips, at the swivel of my chair! Lot of damn paper to go through! Can't believe how it accumulates!

So who is dancing? Rog and I had a nice waltz around the kitchen this morning to a new waltz written by a professor at UW, who plays bluegrass.

It's been a strange weekend in the Neil Young Centre. There's a mysterious stranger in a private ward with a security guard outside. Rumour has it that it is Elvis. I went past singing "Blue Suede Shoes" and heard moaning from inside, but the other inmates pointed out everyone moans when I sing so perhaps....could it be Invisible Eddie?
You might only be a painted crow, full of possum shit but you could at least look at me when I'm rambling.
Only three weeks to go before I go to Greece again so I better get in practice.A couple of cold Amstels, a large Metaxas chaser and a couple of bottles of Naoussa Boutari to go please.

There's a green clicky thing attached to my last post saying "Sue": is it advice to Lieber & Stoller's lawyers having heard me sing? Is it my new name? Have I changed sex while I was asleep? I know Catspaw likes a joke but he wouldn't have operated on me with two bricks while I was snoozing would he? I didn't mention the word so where did it come from?
[Yes, I know it picked it up from suede, but don't let boring facts get in the way of a good ramble: "Oh, didn't he ramble?"]
Confused & Puzzled of the Neil Young Center
Where's my cab back to the center?
When I first came to this town I only had one clog. Now I travel everywhere in taxis. I have to, I've only got one clog. (Joke stolen from Billy Liar by Keith Waterhouse)

...isn't it strange, most regulars don't come in till I've gone back to the Center. Is it the personal hygiene, the jokes, the kazoo playing or the singing?
Well you don't know what you're missing. Me, Elvis, Invisible Eddie and Hiroshi have just formed a self-kelp group. We've been flailing each other with wet seaweed while singing:Freight Train.
Before they ran out the others said something about cutting their throats (this was right after my solo) so perhaps we are a barber shop quartet
Damn, what's that painted crow done on my head?
Who phoned the Center,? I'm not ready to go back yet. It's stone soup tonight, I always get the lumpy bits....[voice trails off into the distance, possums, roaches and regulars look carefully round the door and then come in...

grumble, grumble, just 'cos I'm on day release from the NYCFTTS, I don't see why I should come in and feed the possums and the painted crow. LEJ & bbc must be off on the 'bus with the Kesey crowd. Not many glasses to pick up, MMario must have been the only customer yesterday and Eddie, Hiroshi and Elvis must have washed theirs up. They weren't at the Center when I got back yesterday, so maybe it was their van outside and they've gone off to join the Merry Pranksters...grumble,grumble (and now some idiot says alcoholics are depressed, sigh, grumble, NONSENSE, sigh).

Okay, I think I've figured out the problem. It's that big "Closed due to Death in family" sign someone forgot to take down.....

I've removed it. Also cleared the jello pit, it's empty and waiting for a new delivery. Polished the magic caffiene machine, changed the clothes on the tables, shined the footrail at the bar. I'm NOT changing the paper under the crow, thankyouverymuch!

So I'll just settle down now, have myself an anniset and some brisadella, listen to that music....from God knows where....

Hey, Roger & MM, are you the only two around, anymore? Gotta get my bearings. Now that we've got a Pub rather than a Tavern, is Leej still the bartender? Whatever happened w/ Mona? Was it really the alien 'possums that chased everybody out? (I think I could have taken them, if I'd been in town!) Well, I have good news & bad news. I am back, but I think I'd better give me two weeks' notice. School starts for me Sept. 7th & I am really going to have to hustle to be ready! Best intentions--I planned to spend all summer working on my lesson plans &, instead (surprise, surprise!), it's been a summer full of folk music-related events. It's been wonderful! Hope I can keep my job! I did bring in bear claws & jelly crullers for today & will stop in, from time to time, but I may not be a *regular* anymore. It's been wonderful & I couldn't serve a nicer group of folks! Hugs all around & that's on me!

All still here, bbc, just a little quiet. Summer is a goin' out, along with all those intentions. We will all need this tavern (and it is still that too) come the day after Labour Day in North A. So even if you can't waitress, how about resident tavern archivess? You seem to be handling that for the greater Mudcat universe swimmingly enough (together with your silent partner). A gin and tonic, if you have a minute. Twist of lemming.

Twist a lemming? PT, you should be ashamed of yourself! That could leave bruises!

Not to mention the fact that if the 'possums decide to rally round (and they might); we could get into trouble with the Small Animal Defense League!

oh - and if anyone sees LEEJ.....I heard that there's been a request to use only vegetarian gelatin in the pit.

Hey group....Been a rough couple of days....Fast Eddie appearing kinda' put me in a funk, but thanks to Cleigh and the power of my seaweed shaker....Freud's Marracas...I'm doing better...........Also those dipsticks...Paw,Cletus,and the Reg boys ain't hangin' round since I came out of my "stupor"....Paw lit a fart in my backyard and set the grass on fire, Buford and the Reg boys cost me a C-note apiece to bail them out after they were arrested for indecent exposure and rampant stupidity for trying to piss up a slack rope in my front yard. They take everything so literal.........So what's with the crow?........Peter, I really don't care what happens to the critter, but you're foulin' up a perfectly good drink man!!!!!!!.......Thanks for the clean-up Mario.....place was gettin' a bit stale...........Hey Beebs, since you just returned from Missouri why don't you "Show Me" a Jack and coke, hold the coke........I was thinking of bringing Freud's Marracas down here and hanging them on the wall, but I fear a deleterious effect on Jeri might result....ya' oughta' see this damn thing, looks like a BIG "three piece set"............damn these Bearclaws are good...Was that the last one? Whoever does the next one can make it devolve back into a Tavern if they would like. How do you like my Possum Board............Yeah, really. Those wee possums are really darts. Look closely and you will see they have dart tips coming out of their noses.........Hell, it's a Pub, it has to have darts.....but the only problem is to get 'Spaw to quit blowin' up their arses. The lad learns hard but I keep telling him he doesn't have to blow up the arse of every possum he sees.........He keeps muttering sumpin about upholding tradition....Anyone seen THE FAIR ONE? Ah well, then I will just have to drink a proper of Uncle Arthur's vile black stuff and wait for her........Damn, but I am glad you are back, Beebs, I missed you...........

Ya don't hafta bring tofu, but Marion and me don't fancy wallowing around in any gelatinous cow hooves! Something more kindly to the critters, if ya please, in that pool this time.

Welcome back, bbc, and good times in school this year. I guess I could try a pint of that ole' Uncle Arthur's Mick keeps raving about, though I expect it'll taste like what I think the piss of a horse tastes like, like all the others I've tried.**BG**

Now, 'Spaw, I was quite worried after hearing from Cletus. Glad to see ya are in one piece. Can you make any music with the suggestive looking seaweed?

Now Katlaughingwhohasnotastebudsinherentirebody, you have mistaken Uncle Arthurs for Murphy's which indeed does taste like horsep**s. In fact, a friend of mine from Boston carries a cartoon around in his wallet that shows a horse drinking out of a bucket labelled "Guinness" and simultaneously p**sing into a bucket labelled "Murphy's". At the world famous Fenians Irish Pub in the wee village of Conklin, Michigan, USA, we refer to Murphy's as Guinness Lite. Now, there ya go, .................no, no, you canna drink it yet, it has to sit and boil. When the bubbles have all disappeared and you are left with the black stuff and a nice "Roman Collar" for the head, THEN you can drink it. And you must take your time and enjoy the stuff..................Ahhhhhhhh. Now isn't dat just brilliant.............

Hi Mick...just hangin' out huh? Yeah, I know, the possum thing has gotten to be a real fetish. I was driving along the other day and passed a recently deceased marsupial and Cleigh insisted I stop so he could mourn a bit for his lost relative. So I did.........and to kill a little time while waiting, I took a picture. I've started an album for him............I'll bring it to DC........Ah Kat, just saw you on the "May I ask" thread waxing poetic on the pipes............and now YOU'RE complaining about JELLO?...(sighs).....Oh dear...........Well, in any case, Freud's Marracas really rattles...no foolin'!.....She molds the seaweed wet and the "beads" inside are the seeds that have come loose after it dries......it's far out............Say, now that I'm over the initial shock, where's Fast Eddie?.......Got a few more words for the boy...........Geez, can I get a drink around here?????? .......Did Leej get in any Ale-8-One? Great pop.....and I don't need anything stronger tonight.........I just offered Max $20. for a picture of him huffin' on Cleigh...........Musta' been the Jack talkin' from earlier.........Lemme throw some of them "Possum Darts" Mick.........What the hell is on the triple 20???...a steamroller, huh.......I won't be tellin' Cleigh about this!!!.........Hey, I bet one of these would puncture a bagpipe bladder.........Does Knockers ever show up here?..........Alright, a quick game and then I'll just sit around a bit......who's up for a "quickie"??????

How about coconut pudding in that pit?? Nice oil, good for hair, skin, etc. and kinda tastey too. I could do with a glass of red wine (Let's keep on as we began the evening) Dad's home from the hospital, probably driving Mom nuts, but relatively lucid. I wonder if I could set up a dart board for him?? We don't have possums in Vermont, but perhaps skunkdarts or woodchuckers would work. S'paw! If yoou can't aim better'n that, we're gonna be in trouble. Koko doesn't look too pleased with that little possum danglin' off her . . .

The bartender swabs the bar top one more time, surveying the clientele. "Yep," he says," this used to be the spot. They were all here: Fielding, Spaw, Art. Hell, Big Mick swam in Guiness jello in that very spot where you're standing." He smiles wistfully. "Now most nights it's just me and the beatnick spooks over in the corner. Oh, sure, they still stop in.. usually for a coffee nowadays. But all the hard-drinking patrons have headed off to other threads. You'll find em talking about Woody, or stupid questions, or who discovered Iceland...." He begins to stack the wooden chairs upside down on the tables. "Eight threads, though. Quite a mile stone." He turns the "OPEN" sign around. The glow of the neon Mudcat Tavern sign makes a pool of blue light on the old wooden floor.

"I guess it's enough to know that it will always be here, a place where the Mudcatter's soul can find kinship and sustenance, a quiet port in stormy seas." The bartender slides the brass key slowly from the ring, and slides it across the bar." Here," he says, "you lock up after you finish your drink. I'm going to walk home." Humming a tune that sounds like The Streets of Laredo , the bartender closes the door behind him and fades into the darkness of Tiple Street.

Wyowoman....whew! Thanks. That takes a load off....Now I can devote my time to more intrinsic pursuits, like figuring out where all the billions of pounds of rubber that's worn off automobile tires every year goes to....

Regards, Neil (who in no way intends to offend or impugn anyone's beliefs: philosophical, spiritual, or otherwise; but who, by way of explanation to anyone that actually gives a damn, finds himself in yet another characteristically sarcastic, cynical and crappy mood; and admonishes those who might be so inclined to aforementioned offense to not pay any attention whatsoever. Offer void where the endless void exists. See store for details. Soon [hopefully] the medication will work its wondrous magic.)

WyoWoman:

I suppose one could lose the outer layer of skin on one's tongue should one lick fast enough to lose ten pounds in a week, es so? I guess I'll just have to take up jogging. I guess I could go on a solid diet of jello, but after everbody has been swimming in it, I don't know. If the velcro wall was back up Big Mick could throw me up against it, but then it would be him getting the exercise instead of me!

I guess I'll just have to think on it. Since I am now on the other side of the bar, bbc, would you draw me a Black and Tan? I say bbc, because you've spent enough time getting back to the old school routine. Time to get back to important things ... like pouring!

Dump that sand in the corner thanks.......... Indoor beach volley ball starts just as soon as I can connect the other end of this net to that banjo up on the wall.... The rest of you can start picking teams......

Well, while the boys are flattening the sand I thought we should all hold hands and walk through the magic portal to Mudcat Tavern - round 9
