Subject: Peter Dawson: Wiaita(?) Poi
From: GUEST
Date: 17 Aug 10 - 09:40 PM

Hi there, I'm trying to remember the playlist of a beloved old LP of my parents - 'The Best of Peter Dawson'. Does anyone have it, or can remember the tracks?

While I'm at it does anyone know what on earth 'Wiaita Poi' is all about? Something to do with maori customs, but I don't know what!

Thanks!

'day GUEST

I note that this site: Peter Dawson Australia's Ambassador of Song has a CD ... 47 tracks of Peter Dawson for $9.30. I didn't see a full listing ... but the odds a pretty good! (Actually, I just tested the link ... and Waiata Poi is about 4 lines down. Does it have comprehensive liner notes ... er ... well ... maybe!

Regard(les)s,

Bob
G'day again,

Da**ation! I didn't notice that the mud crawlers had just eaten my 'cookie'!

Anyway, investigate the CD I linked ... and if you need to look for others, get back to me and I'll run it past an old friend (Mudcat's "Bodgie") who has arranged a lot of archive releases of material in the Australian psyche's background!

Regard(fully),

Bob

The GREAT Australian baritone Peter Smith Dawson (31 January 1882 ? 27 September 1961)
There are myriad 78, LP and CD records of Peter Dawson, whose
recording careet extended from 1904 through the 1950's.
A beautifully annotated, comprehensive 10 LP set was issued by
the EMI/National Library of Australia - Peter Dawson Ambassador of Song. Unfortunately - never transferred to CD, and long out of print.
Many of his other LP's, as well as CDs are readily available.

G'day again GUEST, Date: 17 Aug 10 - 09:40 PM

This is a quick grab of the track listings for the CD I 'linked'. I would presume, from the number of tracks (and the break in the approximate middle thereof) that there may well be 2 CDs in the set.

Some of the track names don't seem to copy well (line limit ... ~ 60 characters ... ?)- but it should give you an idea of what is available!

I have a recording of "I Travel The Road" by Mr. Dawson, which I always thought was called "A Gypsy Am I".
Since it was caterwauled by Harry Secombe in a Goon Show I can't take it seriously.
Seeing the title "A Bachelor Gay" reminded me of a 1950s UK Radio series called "A Life Of Bliss" with George Cole.
Thanks for the memories. ATB from Charlie.
