Subject: Lyr Add: Limeliters or Gatlin Brothers song
From: Genie
Date: 17 Aug 10 - 11:08 PM

OK, I give up!
There's a song portion that's stuck in my mind and I've tried every Google angle I can think of (plus Amazon.com and artists' web pages) but to no avail.   So I'll just throw it out here and see if someone can help refresh my memory.

The song was one I heard on a TV performance back in the 1980s by either The Limeliters (with Red Grammer) or The Gatlin Brothers.   I'm inclined to think it was The Limeliters. But I can't find any song titles on either website or on tracklists at Amazon for either group, so I'm stumped.

The song was a sort of love song about a special but transient love affair, and the lines I remember are:

"...
...
She was warmer than a small-time cordial evening in July,
And she loved me like the eagle loves the wind he sails upon."

Does that ring any bells with any of you 'cats?

Genie

Oops! (I really wish we had an "edit" button for our posts.)

I meant to say:

"...
...
She was warmer than a home-town* cordial evening in July,
And she loved me like the eagle loves the wind he sails upon."

* or was it "small-town"?

I remember it. It's the Limeliters' song, with the lead sung by Red Grammer and with Alex Hassilev and Lou Gottlieb on harmonies. The chorus went something like this:

The earth was in her body, the sun (?) was in her eyes.
She was warmer than a small-town Georgia evening in July.
The sweetest taste of heaven that I'd ever laid eyes on.
She moved past and just as fast was gone.
She loved me like an eagle loves the wind he soars upon.

Apparently it was written by one Byron Walls, but I can't find the lyrics on Google or a performance on YouTube. The title is "She Loved Me Like an Eagle".

Ah, yes, Tinker. Now it's coming back to me.

Only the first line was "The earth moved in her body"
and I think the next part was "The sun rose in her eyes.

I guess I had "mondegreened" the "Georgia evening" part.   When I first heard it, I thought they were singing "She was warmer than a small-town porch or an evening in July." Then on listening (and thinking) further, I "heard" it the way I posted it in the firs post. But "Georgia" makes more sense.

Pretty sure the chorus is:

The earth moved in her body, the sun rose in her eyes.
She was warmer than a small-town Georgia evening in July.
The sweetest taste of heaven that I'd ever laid eyes on.
She moved past and just as fast was gone.
She loved me like an eagle loves the wind he soars upon.

Now if I can just find the verses.

Thanks so much for the title, songwriter, and help with the chorus.

Tinker, thanks to your info, I found the title and lyrics on Byron Wall's website.

Here's the song:

LIKE AN EAGLE LOVES THE WIND
(Byron Walls)

She came to me like morning to a new day.
Her kisses felt like sunshine after the rain.
She reached inside my solitude and touched me,
Took away the darkness and set my heart aflame.

CHORUS:
The earth moved in her body,
The sun rose in her eyes.
She was warmer than a small-town Georgia
Evening in July,
As beautiful a lady as I ever laid eyes on.
She came fast and just as fast was gone,
Like an eagle on the wind, she was gone.

She gave me everything except tomorrow.
She needed freedom like a wild bird needs the wind.
But in my heart I'll keep a candle burning,
Hoping Lord she sees the light and it guides her home again.

CHORUS:

That's the way the lyrics are posted on Byron Wall's website, but the Limeliters sing the chorus close to the way you posted it, Tinker:

The earth moved in her body, the sun rose in her eyes.
She was warmer than a small-town Georgia evening in July.
The sweetest taste of heaven that I'd ever laid eyes on.
She came fast and just as fast was gone.
And she loved me like an eagle loves the wind he soars upon.
