Apparently, there was a song recorded by the Cantrells called the Red Sombrero. I wonder if that's the song. I got the lyrics from one of "those" lyrics sites, but I verified the lyrics with the Cantrells recording - it's an exact transcription, and a very nice song..

THE RED SOMBRERO
(Mary Emily Cantrell, BMI)

Ever running to the sea
The way my dreams get away from me
The distant mountains stand so still
But the river is a wishing well
The river is a wishing well

Summer drew me to her shore
The river opened up her door
I stepped inside the cool retreat
To feel my mother's heartbeat
Just to feel my mother's heartbeat

Chorus:
I lost one shoe in the wild Missouri
But I don't care 'cause I'm in no hurry
Take it away downstream
Take my troubles, but leave my dreams
Take my troubles, but leave my dreams
Leave my dreams

Dreamers lose the light of day
But their nights are filled with golden clay
Hand me down a red sombrero
And let the river flow
Let the river flow

Chorus

I lost one shoe in the wild Missouri
But I don't care 'cause I'm in no hurry
Take it away downstream
Take my troubles, but leave my dreams
Leave my dreams
Leave my dreams

There's also a very nice light classical/pops piece titled "The Red Sombrero." The Harry Fox Agency says it was composed by Lucien Calliet and Ronald Dinge. Mantovani recorded it in the late 1940s, but I don't know if that was the earliest recording.

I found a snippet of another "Red Sombrero" song, this one believed to have come from Singing Together:
I have a red sombero, it is a big sombrero
I only wear it because the sunshine gets in my eyes and I cannot see at all.
Not much, but it's a start.

Hi,

The start of the lyrics are:

I have a red sombero, it is a big sombrero
I only wear it because the sunshine gets in my eyes and I cannot see at all.

Aparently it's a song they sang at primary school, it's by Peter Hutchings

I didn't put this one up on the 'folkinfo' site because it had a named writer and we wanted to minimise copyright issues. I do have a copy of it, though, and the lyrics are as follows:

RED SOMBRERO
(Peter Hutchings)

I wear a red sombrero,
It is a big sombrero.
I only wear it
Because the sunshine
Gets in my eyes and I cannot see at all.

I have a little donkey,
He is a happy donkey.
He always takes me
Into the market
When I go shopping
To buy some food and wine.

I have a stripey blanket,
It is a coloured blanket.
It keeps me nice and
Warm in the night time
When I am sleeping
Under the silver moon.

I wear a red sombrero,
It is a big sombrero.
I only wear it
Because the sunshine
Gets in my eyes and I cannot see at all.
My sombrero is the biggest hat in the world.

Line breaks are as printed. If I get round to it, I'll add the ABC at the weekend.

Thread hijack - but can anyone tell me please when (around the same era) Music Workshop did the songs of Stephen Foster?
I now have a red sombrero earworm!

DMcG -
I added the songwriter name. Can you please verify that it's correct? If you can tell us the name/date of your source, that would also be helpful.
Thanks.

Joe:
Better late than never.
Confirmation that this appears in Singing Together Autumn 1985. Words as given by DMcG above.
Credited: words & music by Peter Hutchings (on the page with the song). The back page acknowledgements don't give any further info for this one.
