Saw them in Whitby. They come across rather like the Wrigleys, witty and charming.

The singer one isn't loud enough to work acoustically, though. Her voice gets lost over the melodeon.

Saw them at Whitby also, did nothing for me. Found the fiddle playing on their version of The Twa Sisters intrusive and irritating.

What a load of miserable sods. Hazel and Emily are great and sufficiently experienced to get their voice/instrument balance right (or certainly have been on all the many occasions I've seen them). What's more, the Green Note is a fine, new(ish) venue in Camden Town where you get excellent vegetarian food and two 45-minute sets from the artists and no flamin' "floor spots". Way to go.

They ARE helped by good acoustics in a venue , as are a LOT of very competent performers . Not everyone on the scene is as loud as I can be !

Unfortunately the Green Notes excellent food isn't available on our Monday events as their Kitchen is closed on private hire days Diane, and as it happens the acoustics in the Green Note are pretty good.

Personally I think the Askew Sisters have way more talent than some widely-touted names I could think of. I haven't heard them do 'Two Sisters' live, but on the CD I find the fiddle accompaniment brilliant - reminiscent in its inventiveness of Swarbrick's accompaniments of Bert Lloyd's ballads.

The Green Note's acoustics are indeed good and the venue is so intimate that if a band brings a drummer, sticks are banned and they must play with brushes. If Leadfingers got a gig there I imagine they'd move the stage to across the street. Meanwhile, do go and see the Askews - with or without food.

I totally agree with Brian. The Askews and ourselves have shared a large number of gigs over the past two three years and we have always been impressed by their musicality and enthusiasm. Unlike a number of 'younger' acts, Hazel and Emily haven't been 'hyped' by the media and agents etc. but they are certainly high up amongst the more competent of the 'younger' performers on the scene today.

We've heard them lots of places, and have their new CD, and have thoroughly enjoyed it all. Talented, musical, fun and unpretentious.
