Subject: Tech: qbupdate.exe Help!
From: wilbyhillbilly

We are in our temporary accommodation in Yorkshire with virtually everything in storage, so my lifeline to the cyber world is solely my laptop which I have managed to hook up to Beths sister's hub.

I am running WinXP Home.

Now its started acting "funny". When I get the start page up a box appears that says

"qbupdate.exe has failed to start because QBUChannel.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem"

The last couple of days I have just deleted the message and carried on. Today I put an SD card in the slot to take off some files (which has always worked in the past) and I got another box up that says,

"E:\is not accessible the request could not be performed because of an I/O device error"

1. How do I find the "application" referred to in the first message to be able to re-install it, and do I need to?

2. What the hell is an I/O device, and is it possible the two things are linked?

You may be able to tell from this that I am getting a bit frustrated, what with getting chucked out, moving up north, and waiting for a place to live. now this on top, I could end up doing something silly, like maybe dumping the lap top in the sea and becoming a recluse.

Any help would be appreciated.

qbupdate.exe is a QuickBooks update applications. It starts with Windows (or should do). Unless you need regular updates to QuickBooks (and maybe other Intuit applications) you can ignore it.

Can't help you with the SD card - which is an Input/Output device. Almost certainly, the two things are not related, but many minor faults can cause I/O errors with removable storage.

Thanks Newport Boy, I deleted Quickbooks a few days ago as the wife no longer needed it, so that explains that one, great!

The SD card might have something wrong with it. Try using a different one andnsee if the error message shows up with that.

Thank you McGrath, I think you may have hit the nail on the head, unfortunately I haven't got another card to try at the moment, but I had this one in the camera and that was playing up and doing strange things. I took it out altogether and tried the camera and it seems to be working normally without it.

I'll get a new card tomorrow, although I haven't had this one long!

"I deleted Quickbooks a few days ago"

If you just went to the directory where the app is stored and blew it away, you will always get hassles like this - you really need to remove it correctly so that all the bits are properly removed - from the control panel thingy...

I don't believe this, I went into regedit and found some Quickbooks files still there so deleted them.

When I started up this morning there was that damn box again.

How is that?

We crossposted - as I said - the 'approved' removal process will take those entries out ....

You might need to reinstall it so as to be able to uninstall it properly. Computers are funny like that...

I removed it from the control panel "properly" as it directed first, it was only when I kept getting this box up that I went into the registry and found other bits there and thought by deleting them I would cure the problem.

Never mind it isn't life threatening, I'll just have to live with it 'cos we haven't got the program discs anymore to re-install it.

Thanks for all the advice, much appreciated.

If as NewportBoy says QBupdate is meant to run at startup it will be called from a list of programs that run at startup and not surprisingly can't be found because you've uninstalled it. Unfortunately "lists of programs run at startup" exist in several places which I'm too old/befuddled/idle to remember. I use a utility called Where's James Startup Manager which was free and is very intuitive to use, but if you're cleverer than me I think msconfig is the techos' way of doing it. Google "programs that run at startup" if you've time/interest for a lot of reading.

Apologies for unresearched response.

SJ

Thank you so much sleepyjon, I did the Google thing you suggested and it took me through the misconfig bit, and there it was nestled in amongst a load of others, Quickbooks startup.

It now seems to have gone forever, thanks again.

Well I'm pleased to report it is "still gone" when I logged on this morning, is it safe to let go of the wooden table now?

It was a bit tight in bed and the missus kept complaining about a leg or something.
