Hey, everyone I know that has been playin' a long time has accumulated quite a few musical instruments in every shape and form but... ... there's that #1 instrument that if you wre to be stranded on a dessert that you'd wnat to take with you... BTW, this isn't a "wish list" thread... I'm talkin' abou the one instrument that you now own that would be on that isalnd with you... And thank you for anyone willing to step to the plate here... Subject: RE: Your #1 Instrument... No #2 or #3s... From: Ebbie Date: 31 Aug 10 - 10:21 PM My D35 SlotHead, first and foremost. My deceased brother's mandolin. My fiddle- maybe if I were stranded on a desert (NOT dessert, Beaubear!), my bowing arm would learn what it must do. And now, of course, I see that you said no #2s or #3s...it's olddude's fault, obviously. |
Subject: RE: Your #1 Instrument... No #2 or #3s... From: Bee-dubya-ell Date: 31 Aug 10 - 10:55 PM At this time, it would be my Dusty Strings D-10 hammered dulcimer. But that's mainly because I recently started back playing it after a rather lengthy hiatus and I've been having way too much fun with it. Ask me again in a few months and you might get a totally different answer. |

Subject: RE: Your #1 Instrument... No #2 or #3s... From: SteveMansfield Date: 01 Sep 10 - 02:58 AM I was asked this very question recently ... and it would have to be my Overton (Goldie) low D whistle. A desert-island-friendly combination of endless playing pleasure allied to a robust construction able to survive the worst conditions a desert island could throw at it! |
Subject: RE: Your #1 Instrument... No #2 or #3s... From: mandotim Date: 01 Sep 10 - 03:53 AM Rainsong WS1000 carbon fibre guitar. It's not my best sounding guitar, but it would stand up to anything the sea and the tropics could throw at it. |
Subject: RE: Your #1 Instrument... No #2 or #3s... From: MGM·Lion Date: 01 Sep 10 - 04:06 AM I agree with BWL ~~ matter of mood. Some days I will reach out for my banjo to practice, others my beloved Petersen concert guitar [just the name ~~ I don't play 'concert' guitar music, just folk], others either one of my two Lachenal wooden-ended anglo concertinas: 1905 C/G, 1912 D/A. Occasionally even the 6-bar autoharp I picked up at auction for £4.10.0, back before decimal currency came in 1971. Please let me take them all. Oh, go on; please; please·please·please·pretty·please. Yah ~~ meanie! ~Michael~ |
Subject: RE: Your #1 Instrument... No #2 or #3s... From: Jack Campin Date: 01 Sep 10 - 05:08 AM Getting strings on a desert island might be a problem. Otherwise I'd take my ud (which I'm not very good on, but it's a terrific thing for noodling to yourself with). An Overton whistle makes a great fish spear. |
Subject: RE: Your #1 Instrument... No #2 or #3s... From: GUEST,Ed Date: 01 Sep 10 - 05:38 AM Yawn... Bobert's question may be genuine enough, but it inevitably turns into 'let me boast about the great instruments I own' which is really tedious... |
Subject: RE: Your #1 Instrument... No #2 or #3s... From: Leadfingers Date: 01 Sep 10 - 06:04 AM My No 1 HAS to be any of my Dixon Whistles , with my Docherty Mandolin as No 2 . Then its a hard choice for No 3 ! Is it the D35 , or the Maya 5 String , 0r even the Banjola ? |
Subject: RE: Your #1 Instrument... No #2 or #3s... From: The Fooles Troupe Date: 01 Sep 10 - 06:40 AM While the best thing what with all the sand and salt air to take would be my Howard Low C, I would prefer to take Blondie. Blondie is my 32 Bass Settimo Soprani Piano Accordion. It can play very softly, but also far louder than you would think. Why Blondie? Well, she's a real screamer... |

Subject: RE: Your #1 Instrument... No #2 or #3s... From: Mavis Enderby Date: 01 Sep 10 - 07:40 AM Well, Ed, I suppose this is an anti-boast. I'd take my shabby old Savana banjo which, although old, was probably a POS when new and it is now too. But it's my 'throw in the van' instrument, I love playing it, and as I heard somewhere, "nothing wastes time like a 5 string banjo" Incidentally I'm in a very similar place to Jack Campin regarding the ud so I'll make that my No. 2. Looks like it might float nicely too... Pete. |
Subject: RE: Your #1 Instrument... No #2 or #3s... From: Midchuck Date: 01 Sep 10 - 07:42 AM I'm with Mandotim - Rainsong (or other carbon-fiber guitars) eliminate all worry about heat and humidity, and most worry about impact damage; and the difference in sound is only noticeable to an experienced ear in excellent listening conditions. Mine is the OM-1000, and when I play anywhere out of the house, 99 per cent of the time, it's the one I grab. IF the desert island had an air-conditioned house on it, though, I'd probably opt for the Huss & Dalton CM I picked up a couple of months ago. They make incredible instruments. Peter |

Subject: RE: Your #1 Instrument... No #2 or #3s... From: Mooh Date: 01 Sep 10 - 11:28 AM Likely a 6 string Beneteau guitar that's been following me around for 15 years or so, I just keep coming back to it. Perhaps more practical from a "stranded on a desert island" perspective would be a small body 6 string guitar made by Josh House, though I'm not as sentimentally attached to it as the first choice. If not a guitar, my Moon flattop mandolin. If the desert island had a house on it, a piano would be nice. Peace, Mooh. |

Subject: RE: Your #1 Instrument... No #2 or #3s... From: Joe Offer Date: 01 Sep 10 - 03:22 PM My #1 instrument? - my "D" harmonica. It's a Hohner Special 20, and I really love it. Can't say I'm much of a harmonica player, but somehow it always sounds good when I play along with people who are playing in "D." I just play chords that seem to fit and I noodle around a bit, and people seem to like it. I got forced into a solo on a break on a song the other day - and hey, it worked very well! My #2? - a Suzuki Folk Master in "G," also a very nice harmonica. #3? - well, I learned in fifth grade in the St. Rita School harmonica band on a Hohner Marine Band in "C," but it got gummed up and I never got it put back together after trying to clean it. I replaced it with a Hohner cheapie "American Ace" (made in China), but it was never the same. I don't have much use for "C" harmonicas, so I haven't bothered. Besides, I have a very nice Hohner chromatic harmonica in "C" that I haven't learned to play. I recently bought a Suzuki Folk Master in "A," but I rarely have found reason to use it. Folkies seem to sing mostly in "D". -Joe- |
Subject: RE: Your #1 Instrument... No #2 or #3s... From: Crowhugger Date: 01 Sep 10 - 03:24 PM Poor Bobert, how positively profane of us to hijack your original question by adding other instruments we'd hate to part with...tsk, tsk! #1 guitar. #2 banjo or cello. #3 cello or banjo. I'd have an awful time choosing a 2nd instrument to smuggle onto the island while Bobert isn't looking. I'd be fine if I could take 1 or 3. Does this hypothetical island have a string store? |
Subject: RE: Your #1 Instrument... No #2 or #3s... From: terrier Date: 01 Sep 10 - 04:23 PM All my instruments could wait for me to get back home. Subject: RE: Your #1 Instrument... NOT #2 or #3s... From: Joe Offer Date: 01 Sep 10 - 06:31 PM Yeath, the thread title HAS changed, and my message explaining the change didn't "take." The title was Your #1 Instrument... No #2 or #3s..., which confused some of us who are waxing myopic. I changed it to Your #1 Instrument... NOT #2 or #3s.... Nonetheless, in brash disobedience and defiance of Bobert, allow me to say that my #3 favorite is still my Hohner Marine Band "C" harmonica, now deceased. May it rest in peace....er, pieces. It is a sentimental favorite, no longer a functional one. -Joe- |

Subject: RE: Your #1 Instrument... NOT #2 or #3s... From: Susan A-R Date: 01 Sep 10 - 07:15 PM Well if I only got one, I'd have to take the voice. Although I'd hesitate to bring the cat with all of those folks looking for strings. Sorry, the short answer is "fiddle" |

Subject: RE: Your #1 Instrument... NOT #2 or #3s... From: GUEST,Songbob Date: 03 Sep 10 - 11:58 AM My choice would be the pre-1867 Martin 2-27 a good friend has lent me on long-term loan. The reasoning is that the search party would have more incentive than just looking for me! Seriously, I'd probably take my Meisterklasse Hohner "C" harmonica, on the chance that strings would be hard to get for most any instrument, and the only non-string instrument I play is the harmonica. The choice of the Meisterklasse over any of my 'normal' harps is because the aluminum comb (frame) is harder to damage than the plastic or wood ones of the Marine Bands / Special 20s / Lee Oskar harps that make up my "stock." And I might sneak a Dan Moi* into my luggage, since jews' harps aren't necessarily 'musical instruments,' and dan mois are almost unrecognizable as jews' harps anyway. The inspectors would never notice it. Bob Clayton Dan Moi * Vietnamese jews' harp made of brass, and the tongue slot is cut with a laser. Nifty, wonderful sound, and very portable. Played on the lips, not the teeth, as well. |
