This?

1. Is a Neainsín Bhán cé's ansa leat fear eile ná mé fhéin
Is a Neainsín a dtug mé taitneamh dhuit i dtosach ar mhná an tsaoil
Óra shíl mé go mba bhreáichte thú ná bean ar bith fón saol
Ach smid chainte ná raibh i gceann an té nach molfadh leatsa mé.

2. 'S má théann 'un an aonaigh beir an chaora leat is a huan
Má théann tú a' déanamh tíobhais bíodh do mhian agat ar dtús
Óra bíodh sí maorga macánta is í molta as a cliú
Ní barr maoine a thabharfas 'un tíobhais thú is ná mealltar le straoill thú.

3. Is dá mbeadh tosaí ar mo bhróga a'm 'gus cóir mhaith 'bheith ar na boinn
Nach ngabhfainnse 'chuile Dhomhnach san áit a mbíonn an spraoi
Mar ní thóigfeadh an t-aos óg orm gach cor dá gcuirfinn díom
Is dá mbeadh mo stór ar cheann an stóil níorbh fhada liomsa an oíche.

4. Is a' tigheacht don Nollaig nach dona í m'obair a bheith 'síorchur insa gcré
Mar a bheadh seabhacán ar bharr sceiche nó ar bharr glas na sú craobh
Ach mo mhallacht go deo anois a thabharfainnse d'aon fhear beo fón saol
a thóigfeadh orm a bheith cogarnach le stóirín geal mo chléibh.

5. Is a théagairín ní féidir dhuit gan duine eicínteacht fháil
A nífeas do chuid éadaigh dhuit agus 'fhuinfeas do chuid aráin
Ach a phéarla 'tá breá gléigeal de chích, de chois is de láimh
'Sé mo léan gan mé faoi shléibhte leat is cead éada ag feara Fáil.

6. Is an chéad lá d'Earrach tóigfidh mé talamh is beidh áras agam fhéin
'Gus séard a dúirt mo mhuintir liom nach bhfuil aon mhaith i mo scéal
Óra níl ach togha ar ógmhná an domhain is beidh mo roghain díobh agam féin
Ní as a cuid ná a maoin a molfar í ach as a cáilíocht agus a dea-méin.

1. Fair Neainsín, who is it you fancy, another man or me?
Neainsín, it's to you I've given my affection above all women,
for I thought you finer than any other woman in the world.
May anyone who does not approve of our union be struck dumb.

2. If you go to the fair take a sheep and her lamb with you;
If you're to set up house, choose your darling first.
She must be dignified, honest and commended for her good reputation;
It's not superior wealth that will help you to establish a thrifty home and don't be enticed by a sloven.

3. If I had heels and tops on my shoes
I'd go each Sunday to the place of entertainment,
For the young people would not begrudge any move I'd make;
And if my love was at the head of the bench, the night would pass quickly for me.

4. As Christmas approaches, fruitless is my work of sowing seeds in the clay,
Like a young hawk perched on a thornbush or atop a bush of green raspberries.
My curse forever on any man who would blame me
For whispering to the bright love of my bosom.

5. My dear you can't but find someone who'll wash your clothes and knead your bread;
But my bright pearl, fine of breast and foot and hand,
It's a pity I'm not on the mountains with you
And let the men of Ireland be envious if they will.

6. On the first day of Spring I'll prepare some land and I'll have a dwelling of my own,
My family say that my circumstances are useless;
Sure, there is a great choice of fine young women and I'll have my pick of them,
She will not be praised for her substance or wealth but for her quality and fine demeanour.

A friend of mine is looking for the words to a song in Irish called Naincín Bán.

Anybody know it? Any leads would be great.

James Mac.
