Folksong Kookaburra just happy, definitely not gay, rules school

School removes 'gay' from Kookaburra song

and a bunch of other links now ....

I wondered if at first this was some kind of 'payback' ... but then...

if you were a teacher trying get the kids to sing "Gay your life must be", when the kids have just come n from the playground bullying someone with the taunt "Ooooo, you're so Gay!" .... I'd probably want the words changed too.... :-)

"some kind of 'payback'"

The Federal Court awarded Larrikin 5 per cent of the royalties from Down Under after ruling that Men at Work had breached copyright by including a riff from the Kookaburra song. The decision is under appeal.

How about just teaching the bullies NOT to bully, esp. using that word? What in the world is changing the lyrics going to do to address bullying? They will learn hurtful words no matter if they are part of a song or not, better to use it as a "teaching moment" (over-used expression these days?) and help the children in a significant way?

But "happy" doesn't even scan!

I'd suggest "male bonding" your life must be....but that doesn't scan very well either....

Why not just "straight", since that seems to be the rigid, joyless, sanitized mindset they want to engender. (Can I say engender?)

Very silly - wasting a chance to make sure the kids know the older meaning for the word. After all if they read anything written before the last few decades they are going to run into it with that meaning all the time.

With the current fashionable meaning of "sad" taking over, it's high time the word got rehabilitated, and this song is as good a way as any to do it.

"fun old time" isn't even grammatical. It would not be difficult to come up with a fitting phrase if it were needed. It isn't needed.

By the way, why does no one complain that the heteros have "ruined" such words as queer, faggot, poof, bender and Nancy? Why aren't they insisting on "God Save the Monarch" and "Who Killed Capon Robin"?

Sydney morning radio guy Adam Spencer reported that story, and he added that when he was in grade school the teams at his school were named after prominent Australian botanists. His team was named Gay, and had a team cheer extolling the virtues of being Gay. He went back to visit that school recently, and found the teams had all been renamed Red, Blue, Yellow, and Green.

So giving three of the teams names with political implications is seen as a good move...

""fun old time" isn't even grammatical."

Exactly just as 'grammatical' as "gay old time"... one can easily use nouns as adjectives, etc - thanks to Shakespeare ....

The guy was interviewed on 'Museuli TV' and said that he just did it 'on the spot' without any previous thought or agenda, cause it stopped the kids sniggering, and allowed the class to just get on with actually paying attention to the singing.

He is the Head and Music teacher at a small private school. He accepts the comments about education, and says that he reserves the right to think about things and possibly change his future actions. He sang (a good voice) the song as a round (what they were doing in class) the song as a round with the male TV presenter, who managed to score 'dickhead points' by insisting on singing 'gay' while the guy - encouraged to do so - sang 'fun' ...

I imagine the kids concerned will very likely start using "fun" as an alternative to "gay", when they are engaged in bullying and suchlike.

Maybe with "gay" being used as an insult meaning "sad" (in its new sneering sense), its utility as a non-insulting word for homosexuals is reaching its sell-by date.

In which case the older meaning might revive, in time. The thing is, it's such a good word for rhyming.
