I blew it. Public admission of error: I should have taken a bunch more, as I am down to about 100 of the slims and other cases that I have picked up here.

My objection to the paper slips is that they start looking shoddy pretty quickly.

LF, is that you w/o cookie?

After doing this favor for Brian, I understand better than ever why a lot of folks do not retain these cases. I see now why, on a short timeframe, he did not have tme to deal with the recycling issue himself (and he is a master recycler), but instead opted for as much re-use as possible.

Not only is digitization easier for managing one's own collections, but this particular plastic shatters if you look at it, which is how/why so many of them were cracked in handling. Not too many to make shipment worthwhile, as posted above-- but when I think of the number that shattered as I sorted them, I can't help but think of all the wasted plastic (and energy to make them) that goes into a "normal breakage" rate at the factories.

I appreciate cardboard-type mailing pockets now as I never did before. (Me, I use paper slips!)

Well, it's DONE, they're GONE, kaPUTZKI!

(Except for the one small lot due Sharyn, waiting for the right box)

And guess what! The recycling center WOULD NOT TAKE THEM. Yup, we had to pay to add them to the landfill-- and to us, it was a well-spent $2 towards the landfill peeps' paychecks, and a pretty drive listening to songs we're learning! I guess there ain't enough call for this kind of plastic for anyone here (the mob) to pony up salvage bucks to come fetch it.

I don't care! We put more than half of what Brian would have consigned to the dump, into hands that can use it.

Thanks, Catters!

If LF wants to make those arrangements with the Rubins I'd be delighted-- we don't know them. The Rt. 6 option sounds good-- I didn't know about them. I have a trip in that direction in 10 days, if I don't need room in the van before then to haul non-fracked water-- we're out of water but the spring is up an ice hill.

Susan -- I suppose you're right; where I live, the recycling is picked up once a week along with the garbage and yard waste. This is probably not the case in rural areas.

That said, there are always options (as Michelle points out). Good luck!

Cheers,
Michael

Other options:

Northern Tier Solid Waste Authority Local Recycling Center located in Burlington (just outside Troy and about 30 minutes from your house) has a fantastic recycling program going on! They are easy to get to, just off Route 6....no big muddy roads to contend with. If you and Hardi are out for a drive, why not go there? Mt. Pisgah is nearby and some beautiful scenergy and if the urge strikes, take a walk around the lake, a short hike or just take in the sun?

Another thought might be the studio that the Rubins run in Whitneyville. They might be thankful for the cases for the folks that record in their studio and they are maybe 10 minutes from your place.

I'm grateful that you were willing to re-label them for the convenience of the artists whose music you feature, Laurel.

I also appreciate everyone who followed my changing requests for info. :~)

Thanks to all of you, and people who lugged them back and forth and up and down stairs for me (so I could sort/pack in a healthy spot). More than half of Brian's original stash described above found new homes.

A glimpse of OUR view: For awhile the boxes were lost in the church basement, buried by busy volunteers when a big boiler project there went "live" unexpectedly quickly (in time to save a lot of winter heating money). During that time we also reduced our home energy footprint to the extent that a big old energy-hog of a fridge has been keeping these last big boxes company out on our back porch-- which I am determined WILL be settin'-ready for the second warm spring day (boo hoo, we missed the first one)!

MichaelR-- you were not wrong exactly-- your view was just (naturally) limited. It's hard to see strangers thru space and time, innit? ;~) And yes-- if a volunteer with 4WD comes along to take them out of my van and deliver these up to the recycling center buried in snow up a bad hilly road rutted by big trucks who churn up the deep mud before it re-ices-- of course, I'd be delighted.

I have consulted the local thrift shops before deluging them with bulky, heavy boxes of items they probably cannot sell and will have to discard. I have explored recycling options. I have offered them out on FreeCycle.

This is neither a thread for advising me on what to do with stuff left from a friend's unexpectedly rapid move, nor a recycling thread. The thread title describes the purpose of the thread quite clearly.

The remaining boxes of labeled CD cases will all be in my van by sunset, thanks to others' help to load them-- on their way to disposal, unless I hear otherwise promptly.

Thanks,

~Susan

The last batch came in three packages and cost me about $30--which was about 25% of their retail value. They were almost all in good condition. It was worth it--definitely.

They are not real widely usable with spine labels firmly affixed. Some also have sharpie markings and labels stuck on the fronts.

Instead of taking them to the landfill, why not donate them to the church yard sale? I hear that supports a good cause. :)

Update for folks who have not heard from me lately via PM.

I'm down to the several boxes now that are too large / heavy for me to maneuver. I estimate that each holds 15-200 full-thickness jewel cases.

They are in large, unopened boxes as the donor passed them to me. He labeled them as to size-- so these are probably fullsize cases, not slims.

In the smaller boxes like that which I DID open, about 90% of them had been sticky-labeled on the spines (sometimes twice), and a few of those were also labeled (sticky or sharpie) on the front.

About 10% of them had paper inserts only, which can be removed (if one is handy about opening the case parts), and new inserts put in.

A Catter who uses these for commercial purposes would have loved to have gotten those, but the boxes are too heavy for me to deal with and I prefer not to open them-- they sit on a cold, icy porch at the moment, safely out of the snow.

So do any or all of these boxes sound worth a UPS pickup to anyone here?

And if so, might you pass the paper-insert ones to that Catter for me? (He would pay your postage).

===

My whole goal in taking these was to help a friend-- who had to move on the quick-- to avoid them all going into a landfill. I wish I had more time / knee power to sort, etc., but I just don't. I'd still like to meet that initial goal but damn, this thing sure has mushroomed! :~)

IF YOU WANT one or more of these boxes, please PM with email address, ship address (no PO boxes), and confirm you will reimburse shipping.

Next step if no timely replies will be FreeCycling them locally, which is what the donor said he'd have done if he'd had time.

After much delay-- a helpful parishioner apparently hid them under some rummage in the church basement-- this project is back on track at LAST.

FOUND! Thanks to ANOTHER helpful parishioner!

New plan: to sort Jan. 7. I plan to send each recipient a mailing envelope of samples to be sure the quality is acceptable, then if it's OK and $$ to ship the lot can be worked out, I'll ship.

Hey, help an old lady out and resend me your snail-mailing info, whether you care if they are slims or full-thickness jewels, and how many you want (max/min).

Heartfelt apologies for the delay. A cash opportunity and surprisingly busy ministries took precedence over getting these out. I hope to get to it when I get back in town around Nov. 10. (If I had anyone else to do it for me it would be done by now.)

To review where this all stands at the moment:

<> Brian is sorting his stuff and will take the unsorted cases to our church basement;
<> When I get word that we have the lot, I'll break them down and send them along with a note as to costs to reimburse;
<> Anything else anyone wants to send Max as a donation, that's up to each person to decide;
<> I need email addys from any who hain't sent 'em, snail addy's you want these shipped to, and pls specify (if you did not already, here) if you want fullsize, slims, or both.

BIG thanks to those of you who have already PMed any or all of the above-- you don't need to do it again if you already did. :~)

I just don't have time or strength this month to fetch them or take them away, etc. I know you are under a time crunch-- if you prefer to pitch them in the landfill, I am sure we will all understand.

In the interest of helping Mudcat friends who want these, I will take on the favor of packing them down for them, but you will have to deliver them to the church. Liaison with Lisa (M, W, Th, F AMs) please and ask her to show you the way down cellar.

Sorry Susan, but I need to get all these CDs and DVDs into the storage boxes we're using as quickly as I can. I'm willing to split out half height and full height, but that's about it. We potentially (buyer meets the deadlines) have less than four weeks to pack everything. I don't have time to divide them up. They'll be put into open cardboard boxes. If you want to swap them between boxes, then that's up to you. I just want the cases out of here with the minimum possible expenditure of time on my part.

I have now several people's PMs indicating interest. What I will need is your email addy so I can hook you up with the person offering these to explore your questions.

The offerer does not want to "ship" but I will, if I get reimbursed. Work out with him what quantities to box up for each person so I don't have to count and apportion, OK? Perhaps as he gets them in batches he can plop the recipient's name on each box.
