While visiting last November , I managed to do the support act spot at Edinburgh folk club.   I shall be in Edinburgh from next monday evening (Sept 6) till monday morning (sept 13). Unfortunately next week is the Edinburgh folk club's AGM. Any ideas where I might get a floor spot or at least a chance to sing? We will be staying in Morningside and relying on public transport and/or walking.
thanks

Hi Geoff,

The Tass on a Monday night (8:30-11:30) is highly recommended for a friendly, democratic singaround with a good proportion of trad. I hope to be there myself on the 6th. On Thursday nights there is the Antiquary in Stockbridge which runs a session and there's a welcoming singaround at Newtongrange Tavern (Nitten Folk Club) - both from around 8:30. The Wee Folk Club will (I think - depends on the festival) be running on Sunday at the Royal Oak, so if you speak to Paddy beforehand he may give you a floorspot before the guests. Other than that, the Captain's Bar (South College St) on Thursdays (6:30 on, I think) and Saturday afternoon (from 4) is also a personal recommendation - small, friendly pub with intimate sessions.

Hope you find something! And maybe see you at the Tass if you make it on Monday.

Fair Ellender

Went to a good session in Penicuik last Tuesday, but it's not a venue for those without transport of their own.

Penicuik is okay by public transport if you're staying in the city centre - there is a good bus service, including night buses. It's next to impossible for me to get to coming from much nearer, though (Midlothian's bus service is organized radially centred on the city).

You will be in southern Scotland in time for both the Linlithgow Folk Festival and this event with Ray Fisher:

(hardly any places left for that one)

Hi Geoff, If you get to Nitten you'll see my Twin, Gillian and you'll get to sing.
PM on it's way.

PS I'm on the phone to her now and she'll be delighted to see you!

Hi Hazel, remember singing at Sandy B's with you and Gillian after Chris Kyd's launch party! A great evening. By the way, wonderful to see Hissyfit singing at Whitby - sorry I never got chance to say hi.

Dalriada on Portobello Seafront.
Excellent Sat & Sun sessions with bands on Friday nights.

The ale is good too!

Thanks to Jack for highlighting the LInlithgow Folk Festival, which starts this Weds, tho' the sessions are all at the weekend, and there's an Open Stage on the Sunday afternoon (10 minute slots, sign up from 1pm on the day).
Linlithgow is on the main train line between Edinburgh and Glasgow, Queen St, as well as the First Bus 38 and x38 sevices, so is fairly easy to get to by public transport from Edinburgh.

Penicuik is on the Lothian bus service 37 from central Edinburgh: singarounds are in the Roadhouse, which is right on the main road (on the right hand side coming from Edinburgh)a bit before you get to the town centre, from 8pm on Tuesdays.

To quote the chorus of Anne Renshaw's much requested song:
The Number 37, it is a braw big bus,
It'll get you doon tae Princes' Street wi'oot a lot of fuss,
It has a bright blue top on it, so you ken whaur it's cam frae,
It's cam frae bonnie Penicuik, by way o' Liberton Brae.

There's also a session in the Grey Horse, Main St, Balerno, on Tuesday 7th from 8pm: no 44 Lothian buses from Princes St (black tops this time!)or First Bus 44 route also.

Thanks for all the suggestions
Sorry we didn't make the Tass on Monday night Clare B..but after we had arrived, settled in , eaten a meal and drunk a couple of bottles of wine we hadn't the legs for it!! We did however take up your suggestion and called in at the Captain's bar on Saturday on our way between the Royal Oak and Sandy Bell's. It was exactly as you described it and definitely on our list for future visits.
Didn't make it to Penicuik ,Tattie Bogle , but did make it to Nitten on the Thursday and heard Anne sing a couple of her delightful songs.
Actually , when I say "made it to Nitten" ...Gillian came all the way to Morningside to pick us up and take us there. We had a great evening with some very friendly people and then John took us back home. On Sunday we caught the bus to Linlithgow to the brilliant session at the Canal Basin (some great performances and it would be churlish to single anyone out..but I was mightly impressed with the Silver Ladies) and again John brought us back!
Thanks to Gillian , John ,Ian and all the others at Nitten for making us so welcome. What a great club you have there. Hopefully we'll see you all again on our next visit

Glad you found Nitten and Linlithgow Folk Festival Geoff: it certainly was a great weekend, and how lucky we were with the weather again!
The Silver Darlings did an impressive set on the outdoor stage too!

I see from the telly that the wind was as strong as ever for the Pope's outside ceremony!
