I've seen the pond that Jenny Greenteeth haunts. It's in a wood behind where my cousins used to live, and a boy had drowned there not long before I saw it about 1961. You wouldn't want to hang around alone.

It's always flattering when someone wants to sing our songs.

Enjoy!

It is a wonderful haunting song... every nuance, melody, lyric, phrasing, and the minimal accompaniment. I listened to it 3 times yesterday evening trying to get harmony down and went to bed and woke with the sound of the viol in my ear and sensation that I was the instrument with a bow drawing across my spine.

I can still hear it. It is rare that a song does that to me. Lovely tingly effect.

Good to see you here Cloudstreet, enjoy your UK tour!!!

As a matter of interest, I use the 'chorus' between each verse but change the ending slightly to suit the story.

1st chorus - sweet jewel
2nd chorus - my jewel
last chorus - my fool

I can't remember if this is the way is was supposed to be...
Hil

Actually, it's Mrs Santa....Santa made me listen to it, on CD, at an ungodly hour, when we'd just got in from a festival. "You've got to listen to this". Once heard, I had to sing it.
I have "folk processed" the chorus, by missing out "now" after "swim with me", until the final chorus. It wasn't done deliberately, just how I remembered it walking the dog the next morning, and then it stuck. I have since sought, and received Nicole's permission. She's very relaxed about arrangements of her songs, and happy that people want to sing them.

I've alwaye found that it makes quite an impression.

Cloudstreet are touring the UK right now so, if you're in the right place at the right time and ask them nicely, they might sing the song just for you!

Here are their UK gigs

JENNY GREENTEETH
(Nicole Murray)

Down by the rush of the river, a lover with aching heart
Saw Jenny there trailing her fingers, and thought she might be his sweetheart
He stepped over to courteously greet her and stay a while by her leave
And felt with a rush of emotion her hand twining into his sleeve.

I am called by the name of the river, though as Jenny they know me here
The waters pour gracefully into this pool; I swim here but once in the year
They talked and his gaze fell upon her robe, as green as the river-weed
He saw with a start what he took for a gown was her long hair wrapped round her side

Come into the water and bathe, my love

Come swim in the swirling pool

Come down in the deep with the rocks and the stones

Come swim with me now, my jewel

Her emerald smile in the sunlight had captured his fearful eye
She slid like a seal in the wash of the stream and he felt the bank slipping by
No time to cry that he could not swim, no time to draw in and breathe
With her hair round his ears and filling his mouth and her long fingers twined in his sleeve
First chorus, then...

Come into the water and bathe, my love

Come swim in the swirling pool

Come down in the deep with the rocks and the bones

You'll swim with me now, sweet fool

Nope, not me!

Though I love stories of the macabre Jenny Greenteeth and 'drowning faeries' of her ilk. This book fascinated me as a kid: Faeries

Have searched high and low
within Mudcat and with o
to find the illusive sprite
and tale of full fright

Wiki yielded the story
from England so gory
but nothing of the song
I've known for not long

Last heard it performed
into my conscious it wormed
at Moira Furnace this year
by Hilary Ward in voice clear

so where now lives the verse
and melody to rehearse
for this song I will learn
and to sing in my turn

Can somebody tell me where I can find the lyrics and melody to the song about Jenny or Jinny Greenteeth?
