Subject: RE: BS: Happy birthday Stilly River Sage From: Stilly River Sage Date: 06 Sep 20 - 08:42 PM Thanks, all! A friend called this morning and asked if I was giving myself something for my birthday, that she and her sister (decades older than me) do that each year. But there isn't much I can think of; at this point there is no place to go in a new outfit or pair of shoes or nice new earrings. :) I spontaneously decided my gift to myself a rearranged sewing and storage room. It was originally my daughter's bedroom and was still set up as a bedroom with my craft stuff on one wall, so it took a few hours and lots of photos to my daughter to see if she wanted some of the craft things I wasn't going to keep. There is a stash of frames and foam core in the SUV to be delivered to her one of these days, and the bed is now in the corner and I have lots of floor space. This evening finds me shopping my house, so to speak, looking for a table to use in there for some of the equipment I want to leave set up. So it has been a nice day and I'm enjoying the functionality of this room that even yesterday I hadn't thought much about changing. The birthday wishes have been useful! A late dinner and a glass of wine will finish off the evening. My daughter's birthday is a week ahead of mine so we will get together for a dinner; this year it will probably be a picnic on the front lawn since she lives with a group of people in another town and it isn't possible to create a COVID-19 "pod" right now that would let people come into the house. We do live in strange times. In my county there was a spike in COVID-19 cases two weeks ago, and then leveling off, but with a holiday weekend here now, we need to wait two more weeks to see if things spike again. If they don't, then we have plans as a family to try to create a pod of two, so my ex can come over and into the house, since we both work from home and are careful not to go out often. The next stage will be to let our daughter in once numbers show an improvement in her county as well. We've all become odds-makers and statisticians in this unhealthy time. I haven't used this year much so I should just stay the same age and try again next year. Thanks again! |
Subject: RE: BS: Happy birthday Stilly River Sage From: Jeri Date: 06 Sep 20 - 09:18 PM Late again... Happy birthday, Maggie! Time is so weird these days, that we tend to just wake up and realize it's months later. You probably could get away with not aging this year. Well, if it weren't for numbers, and math, and the occasional person who pays attention. I'll see if I can't eat a piece of cake for you. |

Subject: RE: BS: Happy birthday Stilly River Sage From: Stilly River Sage Date: 06 Sep 21 - 05:48 PM I'm enjoying the rearranged rooms in the house - I'd forgotten that it happened this time last year on my birthday. Since that happened I've designated the sun room table as my jigsaw spot and have enjoyed a few minutes a day solving puzzles. My gift to myself keeps on giving! Everyone go out and eat some cake today! Thanks again! |
Subject: RE: BS: Happy birthday Stilly River Sage From: Steve Shaw Date: 06 Sep 21 - 06:48 PM Well I didn't know it was your birthday, but today I ate a Portuguese pastel de nata (a Portuguese custard tart), a very rare event for me (unless I'm in Portugal, or sitting outside Lutzy's at Exeter Quay in Devon on a warm Saturday afternoon). So I'll offer that up to you as a birthday cake thang. By the way, if you can find these, you will not fail to agree with me that they are the very finest thing that can ever pass your lips... |

Subject: RE: BS: Happy birthday Stilly River Sage From: Steve Shaw Date: 07 Sep 21 - 05:02 PM Portuguese custard tarts are notoriously difficult to make apparently. We discovered them in Madeira (which is part of Portugal) a few years ago and we had one every afternoon in our favourite coffee bar (just down from Cristiano Ronaldo's sculpture in Funchal). In the UK I've found them in Nando's ( they were rancid), in Tesco (very average), in Marks and Spencer (very nice but a bit sweet) and in a local Bude bakery (superb but at eye-wateringly ripoff prices). By far the best were at Lutzy's coffee shop at Exeter Quay in Devon. Lutzy, a lovely Portuguese lady, only makes them on Saturdays, so when we go we buy a sackful and gorge for a day or two. Give her a call and she'll have them ready for you. Great coffee too, in a wonderful spot on a sunny day. They need eating fairly pronto to be at their best. I mean, what's life all about? |

Subject: RE: BS: Happy birthday Stilly River Sage From: Stilly River Sage Date: 08 Sep 23 - 11:28 AM Thank you, all! As predictably as the sun rises and sets, so Keberoxu finds old threads to revive! Merci! It was a quiet day, no gifts, just lunch with family (the best kind of gift!) Since I retired in 2018 I've had both knees replaced, had cataract surgery (with the fancier lens to correct the astigmatism in my left eye - glasses only required for reading now). I lost 45 pounds and have my thyroid under control. Nothing else going on health-wise - so as I round out my 60s this year I feel like I'm healthier and in better condition to keep doing the things I want to do than I was for much of the rest of this decade. A friend (who will turn 90 next May - we've been talking about that party) tells me that she thinks her 70s were the best decade because she was out doing so much volunteering and social and activist stuff, so I will use that as something to look forward to. |
