QUOTE
In roman numeral analysis (one form of harmonic analysis) these chords form the pattern I - V - vi - IV. So in C major, that would me C G Am F, but Axis of Awesome play in E major, so it is E B C#m A. You can do this in any major key. It's a basic pattern in a lot of popular music, as demonstrated in this song. But it's not plagiarism.

Interestingly this chord pattern rose to fame in the 70's. In the Fifties and Sixties it was I--vi__IV__V as in C-Am-F-G (Donna, Forty-Eight Miles Across the Sea, Shhhbooom, Teenager in Love, etc., etc.,, ad nauseam...).

I took a bunch of crap from my band mates when I was showing them the chords I figured out to "Blow the Man Down:" I-vi-IV-V. Two of them started doing Do-Wop as I was playing it.

Irritated me at the time, but funny now.

I've always thought of I-vi-ii(or IV)-V as the "Blue Moon" sequence.

Over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over. . . .
