Subject: RE: Bonnie Dobson - new CDs From: GUEST,Gealt Date: 29 Oct 21 - 01:31 PM I have a cd titled 'Troubadours of the Folk Era' vol.One. Rhino Records c. 1992. Track 11: Morning Dew-Bonnie Dobson (Dobson) (from Hootenanny With Bonnie Dobson, Prestige Folklore #14018, 11/63. No doubt there as to who owns the copyright. |
Subject: RE: Bonnie Dobson - new CDs From: Sol Date: 29 Oct 21 - 12:53 PM That's true, Felipa. |
Subject: RE: Bonnie Dobson - new CDs From: Felipa Date: 29 Oct 21 - 11:56 AM Sol, both statements could be true if Bonnie met Tim after the time she said she hadn't met him |
Subject: RE: Bonnie Dobson - new CDs From: Sol Date: 29 Oct 21 - 11:33 AM I take your valid point, Reinhard. All I can say is that my view is a personal one and that probably 'limited use if the truth' may be a better way of describing Rose's approach to the situation. I refer you to quotes from taken from articles in my previous post. 1) "Honesty or honor were never Tim's strongest attributes". 2) "A man better known for his plagiarism than for his music". These are the views of others taken from a google search therefore, it's not just me that has a problem with Rose and his dubious claims on other people's work. I was, and to a certain extent still am, a big fan of Tim Rose. However, since learning about his alleged lack of professional ethics, I have lost respect for him as a person. Dobson was quoted as saying when she challenged him about his claim of being the composer of "Morning Dew" (part or all?), he just smirked. I have also read that Ms Dobson has reportedly said that she never met Rose, so one of the two quotes is obviously false - or maybe both? ;-) In closing, I'd like to add that when his career took off in the UK, it was definitely intimated that he had composed "Morning Dew". That false impression is also mentioned in one of the quotes in my previous post. |
Subject: RE: Bonnie Dobson - new CDs From: Reinhard Date: 28 Oct 21 - 02:20 PM Sol, I have to say that I have never heard of Bonnie Dobson, Tim Rose or the song in question before this thread popped up with you accusing Rose of stealing the song *without giving any evidence*. Therefore I looked the song up on the net and found the note with the 75% royalties for Dobson for Rose's recording. This suggested to me that he did rewrite or reworked the song for his recording somewhat but that it is to the greater part still Dobson's original song. But you continue to accuse him of stealing. Now, if you look at the picture of his 1967 CBS single Morning Dew, the song is clearly credited to B. Dobson / T. Rose. To me this says that from release on Rose acknowleded Dobson's original authorship. I don't see any evidence yet pointing to him stealing the song. If this recording became popular and the public saw it as "his" song without checking the documented credits, that is quite another point. But I don't see it as Rose's fault without evidence of him claiming it in public, e.g. interviews. |
Subject: RE: Bonnie Dobson - new CDs From: Sol Date: 28 Oct 21 - 07:14 AM By the way, if any mudcatters would like to defend Tim Rose's claim to the song, please feel free to do so. There are always two sides to any argument so for balance, I'd like to hear his side. It would have to be very good to convince me he's not as described in my last post. |
Subject: RE: Bonnie Dobson - new CDs From: Sol Date: 28 Oct 21 - 06:56 AM So Tim Rose gets/got 25% royalties for stealing Bonnie Dobson's song? FWIW, I was always led to believe that Tim Rose wrote "Morning Dew" and was shocked and disgusted when I discovered the truth. Here's a couple of quotes I found on the net today. ----To add insult to injury, when Bonnie Dobson performed in England (1969) at Queen Elizabeth Hall, everybody praised her fine rendition of Tim Rose's song. It seems that in England, Rose had received sole credit for writing the song which led to the misconception that he was the actual composer. "I've written songs with other people and I have never claimed them for my own. I just think it was really a dreadfully dishonest thing to do" spoke Bonnie. Honesty or honor were never Tim's strongest attributes. ---- And this damning piece -> ----This series, which I've now titled "For a Song" started with "Hey Joe" and "Dazed and Confused" and now continues with "Morning Dew" The common thread that ties them all together is Tim Rose. Timmy (as Bonnie Dobson referred to him) was a gruff guy, who had a growling vocal style somewhat similar to Joe Cocker or Tom Waits (without any of their redeeming qualities or talent). Tim Rose was a rather obscure and minor figure in American music. A man better known for his plagiarism than for his music.----- |
Subject: RE: Bonnie Dobson - new CDs From: Reinhard Date: 28 Oct 21 - 12:24 AM According to Wikipedia, Bonnnie Dobson received 75% songwriting royalty for Tim Rose's recording. |
Subject: RE: Bonnie Dobson - new CDs From: GUEST,Lin Date: 27 Oct 21 - 10:28 PM To Sol, Yes, I vaguely remember reading about singer Tim Rose stealing this song from Bonnie but do you have much detail how and when and circumstances about it? I mean did he know Bonnie and how does one steal a song that someone else has written and recorded? How ever it was done is unbelievable and I find that just incredibly shameful that someone could just steal a song from another person. I wonder if Bonnie was able to sue for this violation? |
Subject: RE: Bonnie Dobson - new CDs From: Sol Date: 27 Oct 21 - 06:33 PM I was a big fan of Tim Rose till I found out he's shamelessly 'stole' "Morning Dew" from Bonnie. |

Subject: RE: Bonnie Dobson - new CDs From: Thomas Stern Date: 01 May 13 - 02:22 PM I had the great pleasure of hearing and meeting Bonnie Dobson at a folk club near London in the late 1980's. This from a friend: "Bonnie rarely performs, but I know she did a concert in Albert Hall about two years ago. Her life has been strongly effected by the loss of her son, a year ago." The recent CD, and reissues of her earlier albums are well worth seeking. Best wishes, Thomas. |
Subject: RE: Bonnie Dobson - new CDs From: GUEST,Bob Coltman Date: 01 May 13 - 08:21 AM I feel a special gratitude to Bonnie—she was the first to record a song I had written. It was "Bonnie Lass of Kenmore Town" on her first album, for Prestige. Nice to see her returning to the public eye and ear. I don't know if she is still performing, but I hope she is. One of the folk revival's earlier and lovelier voices. Bob Coltman |
