J E Dallas made some fine one-off banjos, as well as many cheaper production instruments. The firm continued with his sons (name changed to Jedson), but their instruments were quite inferior. I purchased a fine engraved silver Dallas five string from John Alvey Turner in London in 1970 and still own and play it.

I have a friend who has an excellent Jedson five string, so they're not all inferior.

I traded my MidTwenties Dallas open back for A John Alvey Turner a few years back ! Even the 'Cheap and Chererful' - Mine was catalogued at Twenty Three and six - were very playable instruments .

If its not very expensive then grab it with both hands - a bit of work and it could be a fine instrument. I have restored a couple of these and have never ended up with a poor one. Bits and pieces for them are readily available. Good luck
Pete
