I am a Kent based performer who is going on a jaunt to Yorkshire (for a wedding) and hope to use it as an opportunity to visit some northern folk clubs ... and maybe do a floor spot or two.

Can anyone advise which are the best clubs to visit please? I like to see guest artists as well as have an opportunity for floor spots, so concert nights rather than sessions would be better. I will be in Yorkshire or en route from about 23rd Sept until about 30th Sept.

Rather than take pot luck, I thought Mudcatters would be able to help point me in the right direction.

The Wilsons are playing at the Royal Hotel, Dungworth (Nr Sheffeild) on 25th September. Will be a cracking night!

We've only got something on the 25th (The Young'uns & The lovely Hissyfit)at KFFC Sally or you'd be very welcome to floorspot at out place.

Bedale Folk Club (just off the A1 at Leeming Bar)has a guest night on the 23rd - Wendy Arrowsmith (!) is the guest. I'm sure Harvey the organiser would put you on for a couple. Let me know if you're interested and I'll have a word with him.

As Linda said, Yorkshire is a very large county so it would def depend on where you'll be based. Please tell us & then we can help you more!

Correction to Joe's post above - Tams & Coope gig is on 30th so too late for you. Previous week (23rd) the Topic has Sarah McQuaid as guest, there might be a floor spot chance there - but not at the Black Swan that night (all booked).
Dungworth on 25th will be a cracking night, but I don't believe that club has floor spots as such.

Thanks All - we are going to be around Leeds for the weekend, but also intend going to Sheffield. However, we don't mind an hour or so drive if there is something at the end of it.

Banjiman - it's a shame we can't make KFFC - maybe next time.

Please keep your suggestions coming

Best wishes

Sally

More bits of informatin for you, Sally.

Dungworth has the guest performing first and then has a singaround to finish the night off. It is, indeed, a great night and well worth a visit.

Another club to visit is the Ryburn 3 Step Folk Club (or Ryburn Folk Club). Last Monday of the month, so that is the 28th September. Guests are Grace Notes.

Cheers

Sylvia

You might find some useful info at one or more of the following links:-
Tyke's News - West Yorkshire
filofolk - a Folk diary connected to Tyke's News - Just a small note - Both the links to September and October bring up a page headed "October" but the contents are different. I suspect an unspotted typing error on one of the months.
South Yorkshire Folk and their Diary which also mentions some events further afield.
Stirrings magazine (South Yorkshire)and their Summer 2010 Diary.
Quack!

I know you said clubs rather than sessions but you'd be welcome at my session at the Hillsborough Hotel langsett Road, Sheffield on Sunday nights (at 9pm) mixed tunes and songs with beer from it's own brewery.

There's a good singaround club at The Woodman, Burneston every Wednesday (about 45 min North of Leeds just off the A1).

I can be there on the 29th Sally, it would be good to catch up with you and see you doing your thing at last!

Cheers

Paul

Skipton is not too far from Leeds, and we always like to welcome guests from afar, either holidaying in the Dales or boating on the Leeds & Liverpool canal. An excellent storyteller from Holland paid us a visit last night.

Well ..... Having followed up all of your very useful advice, and looked at the various websites etc, this is my provisional list:

Thurs 23rd - Sarah McQuaid at Topic FC, Bradford
Fri 24th - can't decide between The Young 'uns at The Grove, Leeds and Kieran Halpin at the Rock Maltby.
Sun 26th - singers night at the Hillsborough Hotel, Sheffield
Mon 27th - Skipton FC
Tues 28th - Ryburn FC
Weds 29th - Singaround at the Woodman, Burneston
Thurs 30th - singers night at the Black Swan, York

Potential a full folking week! This might a bit ambitious, but I will be on holiday.

Advice about who to contact about a possible floor spot at any of these clubs would be very much appreciated.

Sally

You should be OK for a floor spot at Skipton. There are a number of residents who take it in turns to organise the evening, and as luck would have it, I'm "in the chair" on the 27th. I always like to give visitors priority, and if you could be there by the 8:30 start time, it would be most helpful. Look forward to seeing (and hearing!) you.

The guests that night are the excellent Peter and Barbara Snape - see http://thesnapes.org.uk/index.html - should be a great night.

Black Swan - get there about 8 and put your name down as you walk in the door. That's it :). On a singers night it's just who turns up. You'll get a couple of songs I would guess.

Loved your songs tonight at the Topic - meant to have a chat at the interval but got drawn into long discussion with a friend and had to leave before the end to get my bus. I had my first visit to Rochester this year and found it fascinating - been past on motorway a few tomes and thought we must call in - didn't get time to go to Chatham unfortunately. I love songs that have a real sense of place and yours certainly had that, as well as some really interesting melodic invention - hope to see you again some time!

Not sure we'll make Sheffield tomorrow - events are overtaking us already! But should be able to make Skipton on Monday.
