Wow just listening and it was reported there were people from my home town Hopewell Virginia and that Ashford Kent is twinned with Hopewell.

Let me add my words of praise to the many others on this thread. I enjoyed my time at Tenterden thoroughly. Much respect to the dance teams for doing their stuff despite the rain. And. very much respect to the unflappable Alan Castle, brother of Pete, for his organisational skills. An admirable festival in every way.

And thanks from me too, great sessions in the Woolpack where we barely got around twice in the evening,,, a bit short of air, but that was all the concertinas pulling at once,,, what's great is the approach to adversity, the festival felt friendly and there was plenty to do... loved the Labourer's Year, the pace & quality was compelling... we'll remember the song long after the next anticyclone!

The top gate was opened for access and exit, but said person it would seem did not elect to use it. We stragglers who left on monday got out with caravans on the back and with 2 wheel drive cars of both front or rear wheel drives and it had rained even more by that time. I believe the top gate does get opened in cases such as prevailed over the weekend - the amount of rain was significant.
On saying all that both Jan and I had a terrific time, the thursday night show at The Sinden (The Wakes is in town) was great, the venues really did do their best for us all, the other highlights for me were George Papavgeris and The Claque and another stonking session in the Vine on Saturday night.
Alan Castle, Bob & Cath, Malcolm, Chris and all the rest really did their best in exceptional circumstances and my thanks go to them ALL and all the other stewards and helpers. Well done on what was a great festival. Also good to see Kampervan at last - great singing from him and his daughter.

The saddest aspect of this year's Tenterden Festival was the absence of the cheerful Marion Button whether it was her smiling face as she was rattling a collecting tin at me or listening to her lovely singing in concert or session.

I'm sure all Tenterden/Mudcat regulars will want to join me in wishing Marion a speedy return to good health.

Er s'cuse me chaps but it's all water under the bridge now.

Stupid driving by a pillock yes but insurance company now dealing with the damage to my car and everything will get sorted in the fullness of time.

Perhaps some sort of temporary matting would help for the future but it's all money to find init.

I'm all right honest!!! Don't get Else 'n Sady involved or you'll never hear the end of it.

I thought about sand matting or similar the last time the main field exit was a swamp, but by my reckoning it would have needed at least 50 metres by 10 metres, and that was likely to be costly. If the top field is in agricultural use that rules out two other obvious possibilities - an access out of the car park which although a bit steep would be drier or an agreement with the removals people for use of their nice solid gravel drive.

The cheapest option is likely to be an agreement with the local Land Rover or Range Rover club to be on standby the whole of a wet weekend with towropes. Probably way cheaper than a farmer and tractor - unless there is a local agricultural worker who is sympathetic and wants to waste a weekend. The point is that it's fun for a 4WD nut to demonstrate vehicle capability.

One of the major attractions of Tenterden is the ready access from the central camping. One can whip in and out to change guitars or make a snack or catch a nap. The commercial campsite is a pain for transport and the risk of missing the last bus is a constant worry.

Richard

Yes that was a bad moment. My daughter and I were standing there as this car accelerated past our van and we watched as she shot through the gate, her vehicle then suddenly slewed to the right into the parked car.

I understand precisely what you are saying. It was an unfortunate combination of someone who, as you say, did not realise just what a 4x4 can and cannot do and who was advised by others to get a good run up and just 'go for it'.

The other irony is that there was a much better exit route in the top field that had been used successfully by many other cars and caravans and where we carefully exited on Monday morning.

Maybe something could be done using one of the many re-usable vehicle matting systems. Although this would cost money, which I guess will be in short supply after the problems with the marquees.

Let's hope it can be sorted so that this brilliant festival can continue.

K/van

A worry - is there a risk that the Safe T Elf will now decide that the field is too dangerous and must be closed to all motorised conveyances unless preceded by a man on foot waving a red flag?

Or maybe users of 4WDs will have to show a record of training in how to drive and control one in order to get a caravan pass.

I'm partly joking, but partly not. From what I hear that idiot could have killed someone by her ignorance. It wasn't merely a moment's error, but a systemic failure to know how to drive her vehicle or of its inherent limitations. Worse, it seems to have been one that she regarded as justified.

Well Bigbird and I are just back from our first Tenterden and it was just fantastic. even the weather didn't make much difference (apart from the coating of mud which the van acquired as it left the campsite this morning.

Made camp Thursday afternoon in the Sun then just prayed that we'd be able to get off come Monday.

And in between - well the sessions in the Woolpack were great, also went to a couple of very good concerts, including the shanty session and the Sunday afternoon concert. Met and chatted to a lot of very nice people and put some faces to some Mudcat names that I've know for a while.

Lovely chilled Sunday morning session in the Saddlery with Bob and Cathy - great atmosphere; finally walking away from the Woolpack sometime after midnight on Sunday with not much voice left.

Congratulations and thanks to the organisers and everyone who helped and performed and made this one of the fullest, friendliest festivals that we've ever been to.

The highlights for me were the song session at the Fat Ox on Friday run by Pete Collins and the Shanty & Sea Song session on Saturday which was terrific.
A very good well run festival. The only niggle I would have is that need a bigger venue for the singaround on Saturday night as the Woolpack was in a small area and we were all packed like sardines and I felt rather ill with the stuffiness and heat.
I recommend the little fish & chip restaurant down the little side alley from the Vine. A lot of the pubs didnt seem to be doing evening meals so they missed out there.

Despite the awful weather, every event I went to was bloody good. A splendid line-up. The Tenterden Club and the White Lion bar and Saddlery are outstandingly good venues.

It was amazing how calm and cheerful Alan, Kathy and Bob kept throughout, despite the doomed battle with the craft fair marquee and the foul deeds of the maniac with the 4X4 on the campsite. Many thanks to them and all the team for another excellent festival.

LOST PROPERTY: SMALL ELECTRIC CABLE
Mr. Earl, Bryan and I found a cable for a mobile or Iphone or something left on the table in the Saddlery after our concertina part-playing session. I've assumed it was yours, as you were showing people pictures of the damage to your car on your phone or camera, and brought it home with me. If I'm wrong I hope the owner will get in touch.

Alternative entrance being used at campsite as lower one is practically impassable. I've had 2 stonking sessions so far - friday night in the White Lion and saturday night in The Vine and today I'll be in The Woolpack from 12noon until 2pm. Weather yesterday was fine for the dancers and hopefully today too.

We usually spend the afternoon strolling the High Street, as the lunchtime gigs are always rammo. Didn't fancy having evening in The Vine spoiled by walk in rain back to car park.

I took a detour last night, after teaching in Canterbury, and did stick my nose into Tenterden in case any old folkies were wandering about and fancied a sing, but it was probably too early and I found none, so had a half of nice London Pride in the Woolpack where alas the indigenes appeared mostly to be untermensch, strolled down the High Street chortling at the wannabee yuppies in Cafe Rouge, discovered that the White Lion was really a restaurant in disguise, refreshed my impression of the plastic and tut in the Vine, got some very nice chips in Station Road, strolled back regretting that the music shop had gone some years ago so no guitars to leer at where it used to be, re-ignited the warp core in Starship Volvo (the green one) and came home without exceeding warp 7. To my surprise I was indoors in almost exactly an hour so I may be able to fit in one pop to a song session over the busy weekend.

How can the prospect of earning several squillion pounds compare with delights of Tenderden Folk weekend? Shame on you - worshipper of Mammon!

Now not very wet (or even dry) from about 6 pm Fri until about 4pm Sat.

Er - except that Metcheck has changed its mind again and is showing no more than light rain on all three days. It is showing winds of 400mph (nearly) but I suspect that is a computational error.

Dear Mr (we're all doomed) Bridge,

Stop looking at the weather forecast, (or at least stop telling us what it says).

I'm looking forward to a warm sunny long weekend in Tenterden, watching, listening and maybe singing. Now I may be disapppointed by l'actualite, but pleeeeease let me at least look forward to it!

Don't be a realist, if the forecast is bad - they're wrong. If the forecast is good - they're right. And I know it's all bollocks but at least leave us our dreams. ;-)

K/van

Roll up! Roll up! Roll up! All the fun of the fair is coming to Tenterden: the superb Golden Gallopers, thrills of the helter skelter, the amazing tattooed lady, the wonders of the house of wax and much, much more.

Not a real travelling fair of course but all its excitement, spectacle and atmosphere recreated in music and song at the Sinden Theatre on September 30 in a delightfully original show called Waltzers and Wonders.

The nine multi-instrumentalists and singers of The Ram Company bring to magical life the arrival of the fair and erection of the sideshows and attractions.

Then the audience is taken on a rousing, rumbustuous tour of the showground with all its drama and surprises in music and songs until, sadly, the fair packs up and moves on.

The show is the work of Ian Carter, a music teacher, but all the talented musicians in the group have contributed to the lyrics and tunes that come tumbling from the stage to captivate the audience with the dream-like atmosphere of the event.

Mr Carter, keyboards, said that he started writing the show some years ago but had been inspired to finish it by the enthusiasm of other members of the group.

"The idea is to bring back that well of excitement we felt as children when we heard that the fair was coming to town. We never forget that child-like wonder and that is what we have tried to recreate here," he said.

See you on Thursday
Mitch

Oh Hermione!

Now Metcheck says its going to be coming down in sheets from midnight Friday to mid-day Saturday, and solid rain Sunday afternoon - but the real deluge is scheduled for Monday.

By this coming Tuesday I should be able to get Met-office forecasts too.

Metcheck has changed again.

Sat mostly dry - but the two inch flood is now predicted for Sunday.

I am teaching on the Friday until 6 pm. Maybe I will have to bring the vardo on on Thursday, then borrow a 4-WD to go directly from Canterbury to Tenters on Fri - and to be able to paddle off the site on Sun.

Hmmm.

Spare Parts Concertina Band are doing part-playing for concertinas again in the White Lion Saddlery from 3.00 - 4.30 p,m, on the Sunday. Thanks to Bryan TheSnail Creer you can download the tunes in pdf and midi form (slow and normal speed) from the band website.. These arrangements would actually suit any melody instrument, so feel free to use them even if you aren't coming to the session. They are

From Night Til Morn
Down the Road
She's Sweetest When She's Naked

We're also running a general tunes session at some point - I haven't got the programme to hand to check it.

There's a nice big flat-ish area right on the very top - but the removals firm gets worried that if you are within about 200 yards of their fence wobbly folkies staggering home late at night could set off their bugger alarms. I pitched up there last year only to receive a note from them in my window asking me to move.

We'll be popping over on Thursday evening to pitch the caravan and put up the awning (might try and find a level pitch this year) we've always just pitched it in the middle of the field before but I'm going to check out the upper and lower areas this year to see if it's a bit flatter. Then, work on Friday (boo) but back for the whole weekend around five (hooray)!
