Subject: Singing in Dublin
From: GUEST,Alan Stout
Date: 15 Sep 10 - 03:39 PM

Mudcatters and friends interested in quiet singing sessions are cordially invited to a new monthly session starting this Sunday, September 19, in MacTurcaill's Lounge (Snug), Townsend Street, Dublin 2. 6 to 9.30pm. FREE.

Venue is very central - around the corner from Tara Street DART Station, 'adjacent' to all City bus services and close enough to both Luas lines.

As with Bray Singers' Circle: Any song; any voice; no mic. Listeners welcome :-D

Support to kick-start it after the All Ireland would be very much appreciated. Planned to be 3rd Sunday of every month.

Al

Great idea. Been looking for a singing session on Sunday evenings - not too late, cos I'm one of the ones still with a job!

See you there. Hope it's not a big singalong or a 'ballad session'?

Paddy

You'll be safe enough, Paddy. Not a singalong (except for a chorus), not a ballad session.

It's a 'Singers' Circle' - individual singers sharing songs, and the company listening in amazement...Respect For The Singer is the only 'rule'.

Look forward to meeting you.

There's a grand session in Bray also, 9.30 each 3rd Saturday evening, Strand Hotel, seafront.

Al

I'll pop this in my favourites for the next time we get along to Dublin. Thanks for the info, please keep us informed. Many Catters just check threads, they may not always post here. Good luck!
Hils

Look forward to being there Al. Should be good. See you Saturday in Bray and again in Sunday in Dublin. If we aren't careful people might begin to talk (see the Frank Harte Festival thread)

Thanks for the reassurance, Al!

Will try to get to Bray as well, probably next month. Presume it's Oct. 16.

Paddy

Paddy: That's right: Next session in Bray after this coming Saturday is 16/10. We have a guest that night - Chris Miles, a lovely folk etc. singer from Kilcaldy in Scotland. In fairness, she's in the Góilín the night before, but will do a completely different, equally fabulous, 'set' in Bray!

Topers: Although singing is the primary focus for our Dublin sessions in MacTurcaill's, you may also like to know about reduced drink prices for participants: ALL Pints €3.50, G & T €5, Rum & Black €4.80, cocktails €4. (Soft drinks 'splash' €1 a Glass.)

All: Let us know if you expect to be at the MacTurcaill's Dublin session on Sunday evening? Response has been very heartening and, depending on expected numbers, we have a choice of a small or a larger 'Snug' area...

Al

Well said, Philippa!

You don't have to be a great singer, Paddy - we're just there for the fun of singing and hearing songs.

In fact, they don't even have to be great songs. Just real...sung with heart.

Going to also adopt my favourite quote for these sessions:
"Use what talents you possess; the woods would be very silent if no birds sang there except those that sang best." Henry Van Dyke

Great night in Bray last night and looking forward to this new session this afternoon. It has been a very busy few days here in Ireland. We had the Cle club on Wednesday, a special night in Howth on Thursday, Góilín singing club on Friday, Bray on Saturday and this new session later today.

And the Frank Harte festival to come next weekend. Wow.

Do you folk have different songs for each of these sessions? Cos I've only got a few

Paddy, I hope you enjoyed the session. Some people who attend these things have extensive repertoires and others have limited repertoires. But it doesn't matter. When you get into the swing of it you will probably find that it will give you the impetus to look for and learn more. What is more important is the heart behind any song you feel like singing.

There is no standard set and, over the years, I have seen many so called weak singers become very good, strong singers and these outlets make such development possible. Everybody should sing and enjoy it.

Anyway the inaugural session was extremely good and I think everybody there enjoyed themselves.

Well done to Alan who got this off the ground unaided.

Thanks a million to everyone who helped make it a grand session yesterday, despite the weather.

Hope to see you all on Sunday October 17. And in Bray on October 16?

Al

P.S. What happened to you, Paddy? Did you get waylaid at the All Ireland?

I will be in Dublin over Christmas - weather permitting - probably 21st evening and then Christmas eve through to the 29th or so. Are there likely to be any sessions - either tune or song- at that time?

Hi,

I'm organising a singing session ot the City of Dublin Workingmen's Club. Litle Strand Street, off Capel Street, Sunday 19 May 2013, 3.00 to 6.00pm, to mark Bob Dylan's birthday. ( I know there's another tribute in the Grand Social on the Tueday night, which is the actual birthday.)

No cover charge - voluntary contributions will not be declined.

I do hope this session isn't stepping on anyone's toes and I hope you guys might drop by and lend your moral (and vocal) support.

Regards
Des Gunning ( Committee member at the Clé Club)
