Subject: Mississippi Blues Singer wins AmerGotTal From: katlaughing Date: 16 Sep 10 - 10:53 AM Check it out: Click Here. Here's he is on YOUTUBE. Another video in which his "backstory" is told: HERE. Here is id doing When A Man Loves A Woman...with strings backup and electric guitar. Michael Grimm — the Mississippi blues singer with the hard-luck backstory — was named the winner of America's Got Talent on Wednesday, besting favorite Jackie Evancho, the 10-year-old opera phenom with the preternaturally mature voice. He's going to buy his grandparents a new home as they lost theirs in Hurricane Katrina. Not sure I'd call him a MS Blues Singer in view of what I know of the blues from Mudcat, but I think they are "coached" on what songs to sing, so I hope he gets a chance to sing more than what I think of as more "pop/blues" songs. I may be wrong, but that what I hear. Still, I think it is wonderful that a young man with a guitar and harmonica has won and it's great he will be able to help his grandparents! |
Subject: RE: Mississippi Blues Singer wins America's Got Talent From: GUEST,Hootenanny Date: 16 Sep 10 - 11:39 AM OK, so the guy can sing and I wish him best of luck. Mississippi Blues Singer? - Bullshit. A product of the so called "music industry". Surely nobody except the brainwashed believes in these hyped up manufactured contests. Faced with the real thing and I guess that 99% of that audience would be heading for the exit. Hoot |
Subject: RE: Mississippi Blues Singer wins America's Got Talent From: katlaughing Date: 16 Sep 10 - 11:46 AM Could be. Like I said, I think they have to sing what the "experts" think they should, i.e. more well-known pop pieces, BUT at least the guy is from MS and plays acoustic guitar and mouth harp. Maybe he'll surprise them and really go to his roots now that he has played the game and won. I am glad someone older etc. won out over the little girl. I don't watch the show, but find out about it mostly here and in the online news feeds. |
Subject: RE: Mississippi Blues Singer wins America's Got Talent From: Jerry Rasmussen Date: 16 Sep 10 - 12:31 PM He's got a great voice, but I can't get by the voice in my head that keeps saying Michael Bolton, Michael Bolton. Not that as a person he is like Michael, but his voice and mannerism remind me of him. I wish him well, but I don't think he's going to revert to Mississippi John soon. Does he even know any blues? Seems like a nice kid. |
Subject: RE: Mississippi Blues Singer wins America's Got Talent From: Jeri Date: 16 Sep 10 - 12:38 PM He's got himself a Blues hat, too. Serious, he's from Mississippi and sings R & B. No big deal. I bet he could play slide, too, but I agree that it probably would fly with the glitz of the show. |
Subject: RE: Mississippi Blues?Singer wins America's Got Talent From: Wesley S Date: 16 Sep 10 - 06:17 PM Considering the other types of acts I would expect to hear on a show like that he's a real breath of fresh air. The world needs more soulful singers. More power to him. |
Subject: RE: Mississippi Blues?Singer wins America's Got Talent From: open mike Date: 16 Sep 10 - 11:05 PM can anyone see what's written on his quitar? (maybe it is 'will you marry me?") glad to see he wants to help his grandparents.. I wish the 10 year old girl all the best too..she is awesome... |
Subject: RE: Mississippi Blues?Singer wins America's Got Talent From: GUEST,jeff Date: 17 Sep 10 - 02:16 AM Yeah, Jerry I kept thinking that, too. Except Michael Bolton has that insufferable bombast, overkill approach to the same type of material. From what I've seen of Michael Grimm, while he comes perilously close sometimes he seems more submitted to the narrative of each song. The difference for me is that I find MB annoying and could listen to MG sing the phonebook. Btw, there's a real clean video of MG on youtube working w/a band where they do about 2 mins of each song and he kills all of them. |
Subject: RE: Mississippi Blues?Singer wins America's Got Talent From: GUEST,jeff Date: 17 Sep 10 - 12:41 PM Can't do a 'blue clicky' but if one goes to youtube and puts 'Michael Grimm live at the green valley ranch' in the site search you'll see the video I referenced above. |
Subject: RE: Mississippi Blues?Singer wins America's Got Talent From: Jerry Rasmussen Date: 17 Sep 10 - 05:17 PM Yeah, this guy strikes me as down home. He proposes on tv? I havaen't seen anything as down home as this since Tiny Tim married Miss Becky. Nothing show biz about him... |
Subject: RE: Mississippi Blues?Singer wins America's Got Talent From: ClaireBear Date: 17 Sep 10 - 05:34 PM You get a better idea of what he sounds like, I think, from a 2006 CD that has some original material on it, available from CDbaby. Not my style, but there's heart there. |
Subject: RE: Mississippi Blues?Singer wins America's Got Talent From: GUEST,jeff Date: 17 Sep 10 - 11:34 PM Tiny Tim married Miss Vicky not Miss Becky. If you're going to be bitter and sarcastic, at least get it right. |
Subject: RE: Mississippi Blues?Singer wins America's Got Talent From: Joe Offer Date: 18 Sep 10 - 12:15 AM I dunno, I guess he does a pretty good imitation of a guy imitating Ray Charles... |
Subject: RE: Mississippi Blues?Singer wins America's Got Talent From: GUEST,Guest from Sanity Date: 18 Sep 10 - 12:53 AM I thought it was a tough choice between Grimm, and this, everytime a standing ovation In any event BOTH of these two are on their way!!! Congrats to both of them!! GfS |
Subject: RE: Mississippi Blues?Singer wins America's Got Talent From: Bobert Date: 18 Sep 10 - 08:53 AM As others have pointed out, the guy is good but... ...he don't play the blues... He is very much into a "pop" R&B groove... As to whether or not he can put a slide on and play the blues??? I donno... Two different grooves entirely... Think he's better stickin' with what works for him... Nice voice, tho... B~ |
Subject: RE: Mississippi Blues?Singer wins America's Got Talent From: Ernest Date: 18 Sep 10 - 09:44 AM ...and at least he wears a kind of Mississippi-John-hat.... ;0) Ernest |
