I couldn't find it in a brief search of the web, but I happen to have the song memorized. Assuming, of course, that it is the same one, written by Dave ?? and sung by Dick Holdstock of Holdstock and MacLeod. I have to attend a baby birthday party in a few minutes and don't have time to type it all in, but I will come back tonight and do it, if no one else has by then. :-)

Ahh...Punch and Judy

One of my all time FAVORITES!
Good wholesome entertainment - instilling the best of family values.
1. Punch gets drunk
2. Punch strangles his baby
3. Punch bludgons his wife to death
4. Punch throws their bodies into the street
5. Punch is arrested
6. Punch escapes from jail and lives life a free man

MARILLION -1988
Derek W. Dick/Fish

Washing machine, pinstripe dream stripped the gloss from a beauty queen
Punch and Judy, Judy, Judy
Found our nest in the Daily Express, met the Vicar in a holy vest
Punch and Judy, Punch and Judy
Brought up the children, Church of E, now I vegetate with a color TV
Worst ever thing that happened to me, oh for D-I-V-O-R-C-E
Oh Judy

Whatever happened to pillow fights?
Whatever happened to jeans so tight? Friday nights?
Whatever happened to Lover's lane?
Whatever happened to passion games? Sunday walks in the pouring rain?

Punch, Punch, Punch and Judy
Punch, Punch, Punch

Curling tongs, mogadons
I got a headache baby, don't take so long
Single beds, middle age dread, losing the war in the waistlands spread
Who left the cap off the toothpaste tube, who forgot to flush the loo?
Leave your sweaty socks outside the door
Don't walk across my polished floor.
Oh Judy

Whatever happened to morning smiles?
Whatever happened to wicked wiles? Permissive styles?
Whatever happened to twinkling eyes?
Whatever happened to hard fast drives? Compliments on unnatural size?

Punch, Punch, Punch and Judy
Punch, Punch, Punch

Propping up a bar, family car, sweating out a mortgage as a balding clerk
Punch and Judy
World War Three, suburbanshee,
just slip her these pills and I'll be free
No more Judy, Judy, Judy no more

The ENGLISH SETTLEMENT SESSIONS.
By XTC

(Gather 'round!)

Punch and Judy did it truly and were married in a haste
In love, maybe, using the baby as a kind of romance paste
She's grown fatter, her hair cut shorter, looks much older than nineteen
He's a drinker not a thinker, baby spoiled his could have been

This must be make-believe
This must be make-believe
This must be make-believe
'Cos who do we know, dear, who acts like that?
No-oh no-one!
Punch and Judy

Punch and Judy in a semi on a brand new council plot
Sunday lunchtime, beer-for-Punch time, while his dinner's far from hot
She grows tired, cab is hired, she goes round to see her friend
He comes back late, fool is irate, we will see his temperament

Punch and Judy in a quandary, she's walked out and he is mad
Now he's grown up, can't smash home up, retribution must be had
Punch and Judy had a baby who brought them to married bliss
Mr Punch has drunken hunch that he must punish kid for this

Aural Sculpture (1984)
Stranglers

Punch is keeping his big nose clean
Judy's polishing the stairs
Punch remembers where he has been
Judy knows he's being fair
Punch has always hugged her tightly
Judy's waited on his touch
Punch has dreamed about her every night
And Judy's never had that much

Punch always had a sense of humour
And Judy must've realised that
He always cut a famous figure
With his truncheon and his hat
Judy's always been his bright flag
Shows the audience a smile
Cos she knows when they've all gone home
She can lick him clean in style

See such soul and beauty
In Punch and Judy
See such soul and beauty
In Punch and Judy

Punch has played the famous villain
Wants to rest his aching feet
Judy says she's more than willing
Wants to lay back in the heat
There's a few more shows to pack in
Cos his loyalty is strong
The way he's hitting on her tonight
She won't have to wait that long

See such soul and beauty
In Punch and Judy

Either/Or
Elliot Smith

a wallflower Punch talks to Judy
in a crowded corner where anybody can listen in
but they don't read page to page or speak easy
now they're gonna go say the words
in the wrong order again
they walk in a circle
through all the sidewalk scenes they used to be apart of one time
now everybody just stares and whispers
driving around up and down division street
I used to like it here
it just bums me out to remember
can't you ever treat anyone nice?
I think I'm gonna make the same mistake twice
they draw the curtain
wait for a call
pretty lucky if they get any kind of response at all
can't you ever treat anyone nice?
I think I'm gonna make the same mistake twice
I'm gonna make the same mistake twice

I think the song you're looking for is the one by John Conolly (of Grimsby). He's written a good few songs (good songs, too), including the one with the last line of each verse and the chorus:

And the Punch and Judy Man has gone forever.

Mr Punch and Judy Man,
Bring me back the childhood days of summer.

Some images I can remember - "Blows the east wind like a dragon" is one: "Winter's painting icicles . . .".

I hope this jogs someone's memory. I've got it on vinyl, which I can't play at the moment.

Shoh slaynt,

Bobby Bob

Yes, that's the one I was struggling to get to. Whilst scouting around, I came up with this from a May list of CDs on offer - "John Conolly with Bill Meek - By Humbers Brown Water, The Songs of John Conolly - John Conolly wrote "Fiddlers Green", "Punch and Judy Man" and many other fine songs that have been so frequently performed in folk clubs that they are often believed to be traditional. This double CD contains tracks taken from six mostly privately pressed albums. Only a few hundred have been pressed so far and distribution is very limited. - 18 pounds Also available; John Conolly's New album from Fellside - Trawlertown, the Singing of the Fishing (with Pete Sumner) at 12 pounds, and Donkeys Breakfast featuring John Conolly - The Farmer and the fisherman, Songs and Music from Lincolnshire - at 10 pounds"

Bannaghtyn reesht,

Bobby Bob

There's at least one Punch and Judy song which appears to have escaped the net . . written by the guy who wrote "The Internet song" (John Pole?? very unsure here!) It was sung by the MacColl/Seeger family, and what's really annoying me about not being able to remember more is that I sent a copy of a tape of them singing it on the radio to the author a couple of years back . . I guess I must be getting old!

The one Dick Holdstock sings has a chorus someting like
"Whack 'em on the head" says Punchinello
.....(missing words)... a right good fellow"

Is that it?

Barbara

And, of course, gang, the one we want, John Pole's 'Punch and Judy' is here in the database. That's the one Dick Holdstock sings.

Barbara

There was also a song called "Punch and Judy" by the group, Marillion.

I don't remember it myself, but it cropped up when I was trying to find the John Conolly song.

Shoh slaynt,

Bobby Bob

Here you are - I play it in E (capo on 4 C Am F G)

Mr Punch and Judy Man

Down the lane of foggy chimneys
Through the little seaside town
Strides the east wind like a dragon
Strewing leaves of ragged brown
Winter spreads its icicles
Along the barren shore
And the Punch and Judy man is gone forever

Chorus: Mr Punch and Judy Man, bring me back the childhood land
Of summer

In the meadow by the river
Where the elm and willow stand
Silver mist comes creeping down
To lullaby the sleeping land
Through the bare and blackened branches
Swallows fly no more
And the Punch and Judy man is gone forever

Slot machines and penny arcades
Jingle jangle on the pier
Gone the sound of laughing children
Fading with each dying year
Through the misty town I wander
In the autumn haze
And the Punch and Judy man is gone forever

Puncinello, Puncinello,
Where have you and Judy gone
Gone to join the swelling ranks
Of things we all look back upon
Memories will come to you
In dreams of summer days
And the Punch and Judy man is gone forever

If you can find a copy, Humberside Leisure Services published "The Singing River - songs by John Conolly and Bill Meek" back in 1985. It contains 25 of their best songs. Unfortunately a) it's been out of print for many years although the Libraries in the former Humberside may have copies stashed away for inter-library loan and b) it was printed on olive green heavy duty paper wich scans or photocopies horrbly.

The songs in it are :-
Ballad of the Humber Bridge, Lincoln Castle, Tough Old Town, Bayards Leap, The Bellman's Son, Estuary, Ranter's Wharf, Castles in the Air, Tomorrow Never Comes, Sally on the Corner, My Old Man, Close ypur eyes and look, Another Morning, Punch and Judy Man, Out of Season, Dancing Days, Charlie in the Meadow, The Jester, The Grimsby Lads, Harry Eddom, The Trawling Trade, Sailortown, Men of the Sea, Lumper's life, Fiddler's Green.

It's beautifully lettered and illustrated by Twink Addison.

All the best

Steve
