Subject: Tune Req: From The North Gary & Vera Aspey From: bradfordian Date: 19 Sep 10 - 03:46 AM Would anyone still have a copy of this 1975 LP and be willing to do me a copy of the title track please? I know its a long shot. I know lots of people keep their LPs, but of course they are all stored away somewhere inaccessible. Doh! This is to do with ongoing research into Cicely Fox Smith poems. Alternatively, the group MITHRAS recorded FROM THE NORTH on their album FOR WE TRADE IN FUN. bradfordian |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: From The North Gary & Vera Aspey From: MikeL2 Date: 19 Sep 10 - 05:19 AM hi bradfordian I have a copy of that very LP. Gary & Vera were quite good friends of mine way back when. However I don't have the means at the moment to copy the tracks down as I don't have a turntable these days. But if no-one else can help you I will borrow a table from a pal and copy it on to my puter and somehow put it up here for you. Not sure how I do this but I am sure that I will be able to achieve this for you. Or some kind catter will explain how I can do this...hint...hint On the sleeve the descrption of the From The North title track reads " A hare hunting song taken from a collection of Lancashire Hunting Songs by Cicely Fox Smith 1909. The tune was added by ourselves....as with the following track". The following track is called The Parting. This is a song about a puppy being trained to be able to hunt in later days. I hope this is helpful to you. Regards MikeL2 |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: From The North Gary & Vera Aspey From: Ian Hendrie Date: 19 Sep 10 - 06:30 AM Hi bradfordian, I have the lp sitting beside me, having just copied that first track (a Cicely Fox Smith poem) for Charley Noble who is over here at the moment. The first track should still be on this computer somewhere so I'll e-mail you about how you want to recveive it. Ian |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: From The North Gary & Vera Aspey From: bradfordian Date: 19 Sep 10 - 07:38 AM Thank you Ian. I was with Charley in Fleetwood and in York. This setting is of particular interest as it may be the first CFS poem recorded in modern times. I believe Charley has now logged about 76 different CFS poems which have been set to music and recorded (since 1975)--see Charleys CFS discography thread for further information. If anyone knows of any others, do let us know.... bradfordian |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: From The North Gary & Vera Aspey From: Gurney Date: 19 Sep 10 - 04:47 PM And if they let you down, I just burned my copy of the LP onto CD so that I listen to it sometimes. Trouble is, I live in New Zealand. Not insurmountable. Hope G&V are keeping OK. I spoke to Vera when I was over there about 14 years ago. Chris. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: From The North Gary & Vera Aspey From: JohnB Date: 19 Sep 10 - 10:33 PM Strewth!, a couple of years back, I sat down with a friends copy of "Lancashire Hunting Songs and other Moorland Lays" by C Fox Smith. A few of the words were so familiar, that I sat down and immediately set them to tunes. I left UK in 1977 but heard Gary and Vera quite a few times in the 70's, I wonder if that is where I got the tune from? Any chance of someone posting the tune somewhere. Also did they do any other CFS material? JohnB. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: From The North Gary & Vera Aspey From: bradfordian Date: 20 Sep 10 - 09:27 AM Just for completeness: FROM THE NORTH by Cicely Fox-Smith I wish't I was in Lancashire huntin' o' the hare All across the wide moorlands an' the hollows brown an' bare, Hearkenin' to the good hounds' cry, hearkenin' to the horn, Far away in Lancashire on a windy morn. I wish't I was in Lancashire along o' folks I know, Rangin' o'er the countryside in all the winds that blow As they blew when I was yet a lad, in the place where I was born, Far away in Lancashire on a good huntin' morn. There's gradely hounds in Lancashire, as such there always were: There's gradely hills in Lancashire as how they're bleak an' bare: There's jannock lads in Lancashire, and that I tell you true, An' I wish't I was in Lancashire all the day through! Notes From LANCASHIRE HUNTING SONGS AND OTHER MOORLAND LAYS, edited by Cicely Fox Smith, published by J. E. Cornish, Ltd., Manchester, UK, © 1909, p. 25. "Jannock" is a rather archaic word meaning fair, straightforward, genuine. taken from www.oldpoetry.com. Moderated by Mudcat's Charley Noble & Shanteyfreak bradfordian |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: From The North Gary & Vera Aspey From: Ian Hendrie Date: 20 Sep 10 - 09:33 AM Hi JohnB, " Any chance of someone posting the tune somewhere." A recording has been sent to Bradfordian on a CD as it was a 16Mb wav file. Though conversion to an mp3 (+ cutting it down to one verse) would reduce the size, I still wouldn't know where to post it as I haven't joined FaceSpace or MyBook or whatever. Any suggestions? Ian |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: From The North Gary & Vera Aspey From: GUEST,AlanG at Work Date: 20 Sep 10 - 10:48 AM I know it's a way off, but Gary and Vera are booked to guest at the Lymm Folk Club on 5th May next year. So why not come over to the birthplace of CFS and perhaps they'll sing it for you. |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: From The North Gary & Vera Aspey From: Noreen Date: 20 Sep 10 - 12:38 PM That's great, bill, thanks! I note that gary and vera sing 'gradely lads' instead of jannock, which is not a word i have ever heard. Good song, thanks all! -From a Lancashire lass :) . |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: From The North Gary & Vera Aspey From: MikeL2 Date: 20 Sep 10 - 03:15 PM hi norteen I have never heard of "jannock" before. I have heard "gradely" though. I think it is more a Yorkshire word than a Lancashire one. At least I have heard it more in Yorkshire. Maybe some of our Yorkies will be able to confirm this ? regards MikeL2 |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: From The North Gary & Vera Aspey From: bradfordian Date: 20 Sep 10 - 05:44 PM Well, AlanG, it looks like there was a missed opportunity there for Charley Nobel to perform some of his CFS settings at the Lymm Folk Club Charley did pop in to the library there the other day, to see if he could glean any further information about Cicely. Maybe I'll pop along on 5th May and put in my two pen'orth bradfordian |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: From The North Gary & Vera Aspey From: bradfordian Date: 20 Sep 10 - 06:52 PM jannock: meaning---right; fair, straightforward Reference given HERE Never heard of it before now! sitha, bradfordian |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: From The North Gary & Vera Aspey From: AlanG Date: 20 Sep 10 - 07:31 PM Hi Bradfordian Yes a missed opportunity indeed. I caught up with Charley at the Midway in Stockport and had a great evening. But as you know, his itinery was pretty full by that time so it wasn't possible to get to a singer's night at the Lymm Folk Club. Alan |
