Subject: Sea music concert, SF, this Sat. Sep 25 From: Peter Kasin Date: 22 Sep 10 - 04:48 PM This Saturday, September 25th, the 22nd annual sea music concert series at San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park begins with a double-bill, featuring two sea music bands: The Barbary Ghosts, and Salty Walt And The Rattlin' Ratlines. 8pm, aboard Balclutha, Hyde Street Pier. Tickets: $14, available in The Maritime Store, at the pier entrance, or at the door, night of concert. Door opens 7:30pm. Information: 415-561-6662 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting 415-561-6662 end_of_the_skype_highlighting, ext. 33. These bands represent a younger generation of chantey singers that are coming to the fore. They present both a fresh approach and respect for tradition. Joan ("Joni") Rueter, accordion and vocals, leads her trio The Barbary Ghosts, San Francisco's newest sea music group. They are fast making a name for themselves in the Bay Area, having performed at the Great American Music Hall among other venues, and will know doubt make a splash (bad pun) outside the area soon. Walt Askew (aka "Salty Walt") and his band have performed at sea music festivals in Europe and North America, including Mystic Seaport Sea Music Festival and the Chicago Maritime Festival. Hear these bands in an intimate setting aboard a 19th century square-rigged ship. -Chanteyranger |
