Subject: RE: last fm and mudcatters From: Howard Jones Date: 27 Sep 10 - 10:12 AM Last FM is rather odd. It seems to work by collecting data from people who sign up to it about the tracks they are listening to - they call this 'scrobbling'. This helps them to identify similar music and to share their playlists. Artists can upload tracks for people to listen to. However it can't distinguish between different artists of the same name. Three Howard Joneses share the same page. One is the 1980s English singer-songwriter, one is an American 'metalcore' singer. The other is me. My band's page is tagged as "Czech", because there is another band of the same name. There were some tracks listed, but not to download, which were nothing more than rehearsal recordings which had been 'scrobbled' from a band member's computer - these now seem to have disappeared. The biggest problem from an artist's point of view is that you have only partial control over the content of your own page. You can add your own biography etc, but it seems there is nothing to prevent someone else from commenting on it. Tags and 'sounds like' are derived from what other people who have listened to your music have also listened to - which may be nothing like your music (especially if you share a page with other artists!) |
Subject: RE: last fm and mudcatters From: The Sandman Date: 27 Sep 10 - 10:52 AM yes , there are two tracks on my page that purport to be me but are in fact the other Dick Miles[the last goodbye, and the runt]i dont know how to get rid of them either, any suggestions? |
Subject: RE: last fm and mudcatters From: Howard Jones Date: 27 Sep 10 - 11:15 AM There's nothing you can do - that's how the site works. You don't 'own' the page. If anyone with the same name as you has made a recording which has then been 'scrobbled' it will automatically go onto the same page. All you can do is to modify the biography to make it clear that there is another artist with the same name. For example: Howard Jones If you click on 'read more' and then 'read all' you'll see information about three different performers with this name. |
