I am here in London trying to get packed (skiving off for a cup of coffee just now), wondering why I can find 3 unmatched anti DVT socks but no sign of their partners? Also wondering why Little Wugsie seems to think climbing into my case and adding Eau de Moggy and cat hair to my clothes is a good idea!! I am sure she has been moving things around on the sly while I am at Work!!
I am at my normal work for my last day tomorrow (Tuesday) and Wednsday (my last Official day) which will be mostly Goodbyes!!
Then a 6am start on Thursday for an 11.25 departure which is due at Logan an 13.30. So with a Fair wind and a following sea I should be in South Portland at about 17.00 ish. probably feeling a bit frazzled as my bod will think it is midnight after a long day, The Traditional Amatos Lasagnia sounds good to me!! Just Love their sauce!!

It Is Done!!!!
My Tech Colleagues have given me a Tankard!!! (Thats a surprise!) and another colleague ,that I have worked closely with on a very taxing Chemistry course gave me a bottle of Very Good Wine,
They had a selection of pix with quotes from various sayings on a board, mostly quotes from thinngs they remembered me saying over the years, Including "as much use as a Chocolate teapot" " If you hacked the top off her head she would have "Idiot" printed right through her like "Brighton" through a stick of rock" and bannered across the top

not a lot I can add to that!!!!

Well,I am in Wheaton MD, Staying at TJ O'Malleys with Chance and Susze on the outskirts of DC!! after a TERRIFIC Getaway, those guys really KNOW how to throw a festival!!
Highlights?
only 3 days of them, but outstanding Has to be the incident in the Peace Cabin (mostly Mudcat) at about 12.30 this morning when about 20-30 sang Happy birthday to all the tunes for it that the group knew! using multiple harmonies and a wonderful choral effect, If you could imagine a 5 minute piece on the Theme of Happy Birthday by Handel for a small choir, I think that is what you would get!!
met a lot of new, and put names to some all ready met people , Will write more later when I get back, have to go wine shopping!!

Well, I am "Roughing" it in the Marriott in Hanover VA after a very nice visit with TJ and Julie in DC, (sorry I didnt get round to you BillD but things were a bit "busy" in a relaxed way) in a wonderful house full of music,(That TJ can really play Slack Key!!) with Frangipani

in bloom outside the door,and mature trees and an amazing collection of Azaleas and the BEST of company, then yesterday we travelled to Hanover VA where The Shivers Played a gig, and this morning we are travelling on to NC, I Knew I was moving further South when the menu at the the Italian restaurant we stopped at for lunch had Grits and fried Okra listed, and last night in The Hanover Tavern it had something called Hush Puppies on the Menu??? Whats that about? back home they are a kkind of Footware!!!!!
Chance and Suzette gave a BRILL!!! concert and to my amazement sang a song I first heard in 1956 during the Skiffle boom!!and I still knew the words!!!, It was good to see Mary again, after the Getaway, I like the "New Look"

Well here I am in North Carolina in the MOST AMAZING House that Chance and Suzette have here on Hanlon Mountain Just outside Ashville, It has more rooms than ALL the houses I have ever lived in put together!!! and views to die for, I will put some Pix up later, along with Getaway Pt2 if I can.
The adventures so far,
on the way down we stopped at something called "Cracker barrel" for lunch that smelled of spices and was full of strange Bric-a brac, we had a long and tedious (sometimes) journey arriving in Ashville at about 6 pm then
Last Night I had Ribs for dinner!! with some sauce that was slightly sweet, but someonethat knows me must have warned them as they put a towel at my place!! instead of a serviette!!, Honest! I didnt get THAT messy, (Liz, Nowhere neaar as bad as the Ice crem incident) and Chance and Suze had something called Hush Puppies with their meal!! I thought that was a kind of footware, I didnt care for the taste,
We arrived here on the Mountain after dark and had a really good night sleep and Now I am in My wing of Castle Fortunato, complete with private living room and Bathroom with seperate shower and Bath (Jacuzzi) that ia bigger than my bedroom at home!,I will have to take pix of the interior here, Suze tells me that I might see Hummingbirds at the feeder later, and ther was the sound of American Robins and Bluebirds while we were at breakfas, (hoping for pix of them too). I am aware of the Good Fortune am enjoying at having friends all over that invite me to stay and enjoy their homes and I cherish and appreciate their friendship and tolerence.
Sins, I am flying up to Boston on route to Keene on Monday 11 Oct, I will call you from there and make arrangements as soon as I know whats happening,

We took Micca to the Barbeque Inn in West Asheville, where he had beef ribs and made friends with the waitress who patted his shoulder and called him honey. The Barbeque Inn is the favorite haunt of the Asheville Police and Buncombe County Sheriffs so you know it's THE PLACE.

Mr. Micca (aka the roaming gnome) left Charlotte, NC on the 11:45 plane to Boston. He managed to visit NC, TN and SC in this visit. He sampled NC barbeque, Bluegrass and made the scene at The Mellow Mushroom in Asheville where we dined al fresco under sunny skies. And of course we took him deep in the NC Bald Mountains for a hike under Carolina Blue Skies and clean mountaintop air.

The question is can you keep him in East London after he's seen heaven...

Noreen, YES, it was called that, and they had a very good locally brewed IPA!! Tams, I am heading for the Press room on Friday, if the creek dont rise, I am aiming to be in Maine by Tuesday afternoon at the latest hoping to make the Pub Quiz!! The Barbeque ribs was interesting!1 they brought a towel instead of a napkin!!when I can I will put up a photo, the mountaintop that Chance mentioned was called Max Patch, I didnt know he had a Mountain in NC named after him!
So I am safely ensconced in "Tam Lin" nr Keene NH and going to crash soon as this day started at 5.45 this morning. More later

Your correspondent is currently in a house in the woods in rural New Hampshire, where we had FROST last night, afer the 75 degrees temps of NC this is a bit of a shock. Attended the rehersal of Animaterra (the Choir) last night and heard lots of wonderful music including "Bright Morning Star" and several other beautiful tunes.This house is FULL of music!!
I am moving to the coast tomorrow as a change of plan has shortened my visit to Keene, I will be in Portsmouth with Tom and Linn for a few days before heading North to Portlandwhere I hope to be by Tuesday, at the latest, as there is a possibility of being on a pub quiz team on Tuesday eve. I will get more pix up when I can,

Morti is right, Summer is best. Festivals depend on what sort of thing you like, concerts or singarounds, large or small. My guess is that you'd prefer something like the Getaway! Have a think about what you'd like to do Honey, it'd be wonderful to have you visit and I'm certain that there'll be plenty of offers of accommodation and transport etc. I would be 'miffed' in the extreme if your tour didn't include Old Keepers!

When you can give us some parameters re dates, length of visit and what you'd like to do we can start a new thread and get it sorted *grin* Any help I can give is there for you!

Well, here I am, in what can best be described as sodden New Hampshire!! It has rained steadily since yesterday, I think it must have something to do with a "Nor'easter"? I suppose that is the local equivalent to a "sou'wester" back home (the rain-laden wind, not the stylish rain hat worn by sailors on sardine tins), Tom and I are collecting ourselves together to set off for the Press Room shortly for a sing, Good to be back!!

I am at the end of what may be the definition of a "perfect" day,
Brunch at the "Stuff-it Inn"( I don't think this is the right name but its the best I can remember) they do a grilledchicken BLT toasted, MMMMMMmmmmm, followed by Wine tasting at Flag Hill Winery, then to the Press Room for a Shanty sing!! where the anniversary of Barry finn was remembered with his picture and a candle and the traditional empty glass beside it (just in case he showed up) The singing was very good and lots of friends there including Dave Coffin who was on sparkling form, and some of the Usual Suspects. As Para Handy used to say "Chust sublime". I am endeavouring, on your behalf to enjoy this trip as much as I can, it's tough but someone has to!! I am amazed and delighted with what wonderful hospitable friends I have made on this Mudcat of ours, How welcoming and how musical and I feel both blessed and humbled by knowing them.
I thank all my hosts and hostesses on this trip so far, I think I may have to add a chapter to "How to be a good guest"

a really good day, coming to a close some light shopping and after an excellent meal, of chicken Ala Tom Hall with Poully Fuisse 2006 (white Burgundy, First class) and Marques de Riscal (Rioja also very good) 2004 followed by Boursin, apples and Local Cheddar with a Warres 2000 Port (out of this world) a meal and company fit for a King Someone has to do this enjoying on all your behalves and I am grateful that it is for this I Thank you.

How DO I describe this evening?
We lost our usual venue for our annual New England-UK friendship dinner because UNH Durham closed Acorns (BOOO!!)where we have gathered for the last 8 years.
but we found ourselves at "The Black Trumpet" in downtown Portsmouth NH for dinner,with an innovative and interesting menu,
I had an incredible 1927 Solera sherry (think Oloroso, with attitude) as did 2 of 3 of my companions (the other settled for a Lustau Fino, which is amazing in its own right), followed by almonds Garlic and Olives in a rich Olive Oil for a starter! the main course in my case was a skirt of beef tender as a Mothers kiss with a yucca and potato stuffed thingy with it, Linn had Lamb and Jeri and Tom had a burger that was immaculate and a Million miles from The "Scottish" restaurant. The wines were a "Brunello de Montalcino" from 2004 that was just a tad young and followed by a Rioja from 2006 that was perfect, some of my companions shared a Pumpkin Creme Brulee that was pretty good, while Tom and I had coffee, he with rum I with a First class 50 yo Armagnac, The staff were the BEST present when needed but not intrusive, informed about both the wine and food available and yet invisible, I am seriously impressed with the service the food, the wines and my companions!! what more could you ask for? I have indeed been fortunate and am humbled by those that I can call "friends" I am sitting here with a glass of Port celebrating my good Luck in having such friends as these, some people spend their lifetimes not knowing what I now know and share, I thank you who made this possible

We had the best time. The wait staff at Demillo's greeted us with a formal chorus of Good Evening with a formal bow and a giggle. Seems they were bored and decided to try it on the next people to walk in. We did our best to relieve the boredom. Micca ordered "something dead" to start. It went down hill from there.
Jez Lowe was even better than my key lime tart. Small audience but amazing finger picking, tunes, lyrics. The new CD is filled with gems - Bare Knuckle, The Judas Bus, All Clear, The Ex-Pitman.s Pot-holing Pub Quiz Team. He could have gone on for another two hours and I would not have budged.

Charlie, I'm here until early next week, I do not know what the "Evil Sisterhood" (Maine Branch) have planned beyond Lunch and shopping with Jacqui and shopping (or some specifics of mine) today and dinner with
Mary and a friend tonight!! They don't tell me so there is less chance for me to screw up their plans. (the skilled way they guided me to selecting to dine at Demillos (where they wanted to go from the start) last night was a masterpiece of gentle nudging. Still you gotta love them (They Insist!!)
So here I am, Portland Maine sitting drinking TEA at Marys computer trying to archive and back up the photos od this trip in spite of Alice's (The Cat)editorial attempts. Reviewing Pix is reminding me of where Ive been, who and what I've seen in the last few weeks, and some making me laugh out loud, The Mummers Play Big Mick being "dressed" for his "part" ClaireBear as the Musician and Rapaire as the Music Stand (Typecasting for a Librarian!!) Tinker launching into BOB in the Peace cabin!! Janie and LOTS of others singing, North Carolina...,The Autumn colour at Keene and the wonderful singing of the Animaterras Both Choir and individual (thanks Ali and Hunt) Wine Tasting, the Press Room, and just when I thought "Peace and Tranquil" Portland...................

I'm not sure how I missed out on Jez Lowe up to now. This is a guy that I will add to the list of must see performers.

He writes the most incredible songs, his voice is beautiful his sense of humour sublime and his picking is incredible. He decided to go straight through, no interval and we were quite happy with that, As Mary says, we could have listened for a couple more hours at least.

Add that to a great meal at DeMillo's (thank you Micca) and we had a superb night out.

Micca - I'll be over a bit earlier than agreed - see you about 11.00 this morning.

I may have gained ten pounds this weekend. Multiple meals and endless bottles of good to excellent wine. Micca is resting up today for a steak dinner tonight (suppa here in Maine. Tomorrow he plays with Tami and then busses down to Boston and flies to the Old World hopefully in better condition than that in which he arrived.

Last day in Maine,:o( then Homeward bound tonight after this Marathon trip full of wonders and friends and incredible (great) meals amd wine!! as opposed to incredible (bad) on a previous occassion involving a Roy Rogers doughnut place on I95 in New Jersey and the WORST Coffe and Doughnuts in the Universe.
To borrow from RtS's travelogues and his descriptions of some of the delightfully eccentric characters he meets on his travels; There is one character here in Portland ME that is larger than life and memorable. I went in a specialist wine store a couple or 3 years ago and got talking to the owner, Jacques (pronounced Jock) and he was proudly showing off his wines and reccommended a new to his store (and to me) wine and promised me my money back if I didnt like it, and asked me to e-mail him my tasting notes and a short review (good or bad) when I tasted it!!! This I did (BTW it was excellent) and forgot about it. This trip, Jacqui and I are in a different part of Portland and manage to find a parking place (no small feat along the waterfront) and right by us is a Wine shop, since the main object of our shopping trip is to find some wine for Marys Birthday dinner (which I was cooking Friday night) we popped in ,just to look, Jock came out of the office and Yelled down the store "Micca" and advanced and gave me a big hug, and carried on like I was his long lost brother!! we talked Wine for the next 45 mins, (leaving Jacqui standing by in amazement) Found what we wanted and paid, with a nother of his New Discoveries (which was AMAZING on drinking) T\Remember, this guy had met me on Two occassions, a year apart, this was the 3rd time, he had moved to larger premises ,but we picked up as if I saw him every week!!!
A true Highlight from this trip and the wines were, of course , Outstanding!!!

After breakfast at the Mousse Cafe and Bakery, I walked him to his favorite used bookshop in Portland, which is unfortunately closing at the end of the week. Then we picked up Jason and Bandit and took him to visit Cuillion at the farm. Had to drag him out, reminding him he needed to be on the 5 PM bus and we still had to pick up his luggage at Mary's. Got him dropped off at the bus station just as they announced boarding for departure. We miss him already.

I am at Logan, having been suitably herded by a combination of Tami, Bandit and Jason, I was barely seated on the bus when we set off and am now thru security(why does the process never make me feel more secure?) and sitting on my bot waiting for my flight in an hour and a half!! and drinking Starblechs coffee, (about a 3-4Max on the 1(bad) to 10(good) scale of drinks!! I might try and eat groundside but I havent seen anything I fancy (no Nuns on offer)will look around in a moment, THE GOOD NEWS they have Free WiFi!!!!
It was SO interesting to meet Culionn today and to visit THE Farm!! we both talked like we had known each other years and were just catching up!! like all my friends I ish I could have spent more time with them!
Already I KNOW I have left 2 things at Mrys, My Wash kit is in the bathroom, and a black mouse mat (quite important, and postable) by the Computer,
Will post More later when(if) I find something edible Wish me luck, it seems to be The Scottish Restaurant aand that ilk.
