Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Braes o' Appin (Iain Ingram) From: Gallus Moll Date: 03 Sep 20 - 07:08 PM Argh - re my comment above, I like Jim and John's accompaniment to their version on Sae Will We Yet (corrected title!)cd! Am less keen on the 'echo-ing' version on Iain's cd, but that is probably because I prefer a less enhanced backing? I like him just singing with his guitar!! |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Braes o' Appin (Iain Ingram) From: Gallus Moll Date: 03 Sep 20 - 11:07 AM Just came across this thread again!!! (someone wants Braes o Appin words and music) Jim Jack and John Graham have recorded The Braes o Appin on their cd (is it called Sae Will Ye Yet? OK I do have the cd and should know - - -) They learned the song from Iain so is accurate tho with their own style and accompaniment. (unlike the couple of versions on y*ut*be which are really only vaguely like Iain's original!) I have to say I prefer Iain playing live with simple guitar accompaniment, maybe a vocal harmony - the recording is a bit too echoing for me.... |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Braes o' Appin (Iain Ingram) From: Tattie Bogle Date: 10 Oct 10 - 07:22 PM Great idea GM, do bring CDS or even himself along (subject to available places!) And it would be good to have some of his stuff on Youtube (I think it's Ok to mention it, (there's certainly a thread here about Youtube clips! ) provided you're not infringing copyright, which you wouldn't be if your nagging/persuasion of the man himself is effective! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Braes o' Appin (Iain Ingram) From: GUEST,Gallus Moll Date: 07 Oct 10 - 03:23 PM I'll suggest that to him T.B.! (cds to Lauries / Ballads Club) - I am also going to work on him (i.e. nag, try to get his original versions of at least some of the songs onto y*u t*b* (not sure if one is allowed to mention other sites?) so that people can hear how Iain composed them - one has no control over the 'folk process', but it is good to be able to start off with the writer intended, maybe learn the story behind the song?! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Braes o' Appin (Iain Ingram) From: Tattie Bogle Date: 06 Oct 10 - 09:18 PM That would be good. Perhaps he can bring along some CDs for us all to get signed copies! BTW, I've heard another couple of renditions of Annie McKelvie this week, and both are different again! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Braes o' Appin (Iain Ingram) From: GUEST,Gallus Moll Date: 06 Oct 10 - 06:51 PM Thanks T.B. -let me know if you want to meet up with Iain! He nearly made it to the Ballads Club with Ray Fisher - perhaps we'll see him at the November one with Tam Spiers? G.M. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Braes o' Appin (Iain Ingram) From: GUEST,Gallus Moll Date: 05 Oct 10 - 04:51 PM Hi Guest, is this still Graeme Dempster? Tattie Bogle mentioned The Living Tradition magazine's online shop; I have no idea how to do links, but you should be able to do a search for it - or try Pete Heywood who is the editor. I haven't spoken to Iain recently, don't know if there are any available elsewhere, the online shop is probably best bet - otherwise we just have to set up a meeting in Glasgow, Erskine or wherever, then you can obtain an autographed copy directly from Iain himself!! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Braes o' Appin (Iain Ingram) From: GUEST Date: 05 Oct 10 - 03:29 PM That's brilliant. Thanks very much for that. I will try and get a copy of the CD as it is for my mum & dad who are now in New Zealand and they heard the song when they came over for a holiday and we went to the Etrick Bar folk night a few months ago and they all played this song. They want to learn it so they can play it in NZ. Any ideas where I can get a copy of the CD locally (i stay in Erskine). Thanks again |

Subject: Lyr Add: THE BRAES O' APPIN (Iain Ingram) From: GUEST,Gallus Moll Date: 03 Oct 10 - 06:37 PM The Braes O Appin is on Iain's cd Words O Fiction (2004) Wi the darkness o winter drawing near When autumn leaves are falling And the swallows disappear When the love o a night is the fire glow Like setting suns remembered When we were baith young and free Tumbling doon the braes o Appin Tae the sea chorus On the braes, the braes o Appin Ah fell in love wi you Love Ah thocht wad last a summer Never dreamt a lifetime through Laughing children that once was you and me Tumbling doon the braes o Appin Tae the sea In Lochaber aroon by Aonach MMor We met as strangers walking Heading doon Loch Linnhe's shore Shared the sunlight, the mist and early dew Ah sang o love and beauty Tae the girl entwined wi me Tumbing doon the braes o Appin tae the sea In the shadows o Morven nestled doon Ower Mull the sun was sinking At the rising o the moon In the morning awoke tae seagull cries A smir was clouding Lismore Ah recall as you and me Tumbled doon the braes o Appin Tae the sea I don't think you can buy the cd from any of the usual outlets - possibly somewhere in Bearsden or Milngavie, I'll find out; you could try contacting Mick Macneil of Mix Studios at Auchineden (near Milngavie I think) or if you are in the West of Scotland / Glasgow area you can get in touch with Iain - - I'll ask him how you can obtain one if you live farther away! |
