Subject: BS: Couples: How did you meet each other?
From: GUEST,Guest - Lindy
Date: 03 Oct 10 - 03:15 AM

It's always been of interest to me to know how people met their spouse or if not married, how you met your boyfriend/girlfriend you are currenty with?

I guess a lot of people meet on-line these days at dating sites but probably people still meet at work, college, clubs, church, etc.

So I just am curious where people meet each other and if on-line dating seems to be the most popular place to meet one another.

For example, if you met at college, how exactly did you meet? Were you introduced or sat near each other in a class?

Or if met a church, was it in a singles group you were involved with at your church, or did you meet because you were both in the choir?

If you met at a party or bar/pub how exactly did you meet? Were you introduced or just standing near each other in the bar and started a conversation? Did you ask for the person's phone # right away or only after runnng into each other at the same place a lot?

So, to anyone who would like to respond to this thread, be specific on exactly how you met your spouse, boyfriend/girlfriend.

It's all Micca's fault and one day he shall be held to account for it.

Alcohol was involved... so was food, music and dancing giants... that's all I remember.

Spelling correction: Near the end of my first sentence, I have a typo. The word "currently" was what I meant to write (not currenty).
It's after midnight and I am very sleepy. :-)

Well, Herself & I met at college, were in a group of friends and gone out with (several) other members of the group, ended up together just before we finished our courses, went to work in different cities but kept in touch, met when we could, then I moved down to London where she was working and we celebrate our 40th Wedding Anniversary in December.
I always say I knew she was the girl for me when I discovered she had the 78 of Rock Island Line (LD) and that she was attracted to me by the size of my repertoire -though she's been disappointed for 40 years in my performances. To those of our friends who thought it wouldn't last, we always say we stay together for the sake of the record collection.

It was a moonlit night in Old Mexico. I passed between two old adobi-haciendas where I heard the plaintive cry of a young Mexican girl!
That was the record that was playing when our eyes met in a coffee bar... many many years ago........ Love at first sight for both of us... now she can't stand the sight of me LOL Divorced 36 years ago!!

To Arthur Itus:

That's a pretty nice way to meet,(on a train) but exactly how did you meet?
Was she sitting next to you or did you meet in the dining car of the train? Had you seen her on the train before but just had never actually talked to one another?

Well Lindy, I saw her getting on the train and took a liking to her and she sat down and I sat down next to her. I then chatted her up.
It's possibly one of the best ways of chatting somebody up, as you get their undivided attention. It was on a train in Holland on it's way to Amsterdam.
That was 35 years ago and we eventually got married and are still together.

It was a cold, November Sunday afternoon and I was doing a gig in a small pub in Ehrenfeld, Köln. I noticed a lady with a nice figure and I hoped that she would be around for a chat after the gig. I really wanted to get my hands on her bottom. Fortunately, she was thinking along the same lines...

In a Uni folk club - first year, first week. I did a floor spot and he came across and said "Do you want to form a group?"

Yes, we're still together. Our son's first CD is just out, daughter is a morris dancer, but I didn't think he meant that sort of group at the time.

It happened one day in a dilapidated tradin' post on the coast of West Africa. I had took up with this group of hunters and explorers...a few white hunters and their ramblin' gang of black porters, and we had just emerged from a lengthy trek through bush and savannah onto the coast where there was this little harbor and we was pickin' up some supplies and sellin' some ivory.

I felt a sudden call of nature. That happens quite a bit, and if yer in the jungle you just go behind a bush, but I figgered it was time to start learnin' the ways of the "white man" if I was gonna get ahead with these people, so I headed for the loo that was at the back of the tradin' post.

Inside the small and dusty room I found my first porcelain toilet. It was pretty filthy, I must say, and I was not too impressed by the benefits of "civilization" upon seein' it, but I managed to use it successfully anyway. Then it occurred to me that the next thing people do is...they wash up. I turned to the sink, reached for the tap, and........!

Right there before me I seen the most charmin' face I had ever laid eyes on! Two soft brown, close-set eyes twinklin' brightly under heavy brows, a big mouth fulla scary-lookin' teeth, flared nostrils....a picture of scintillatin' beauty that was unforgettable!

It was.....ME!!! Yup, I was lookin' at myself in the first mirror I had ever seen, and I fell in love at first sight.

We have been together ever since that day. Me and myself. On that day I met the one person I can always count on, the one person I can trust to always be lookin' out for me, the one person who has remained faithful through thick and thin.

Our anniversary is comin' up next month on the 15th. I plan to buy myself a bottle of really good whisky and a dozen red roses and celebrate in style, cos this is a love that was written in the stars and emblazoned upon the sands of time, a love that will never die.

(GREAT BIG GRIN!)

December 15th of 1980 -- I was working for McAllister & Company (type shop) in Portsmouth, NH. I had JUST moved to Portsmouth from Kennebunkport, Maine and I probably would not have gone to the party if I wasn't living in Portsmouth. Anyway, I went along with several co-workers to the pre-Christmas client party at Fishtraks recording studio which, at that time, was located on the 3rd floor of the house at Rye Beach owned by another client of M & Co. I came downstairs after a tour of the studio and standing and talking at the foot of the stairs were Denise Brown (now Ad-Cetera), designer & paste-up artist I worked with, Hal Inglis, who owned a local advertising agency, and Tom Hall, who had gone to school with Hal and was there because he was a local folk musician. I stopped to talk. Eventually Denise and Hal drifted away and Tom and I went off together to find some more wine, then ended up in a secluded corner trading songs. Shortly after, he introduced me to his banjo-playing musical partner (who was also head of printing for the State of New Hampshire), Bob Frost. The two co-workers I came with were leaving and Tom said he'd see me home. After Tom, Bob and I left the party (after receiving commemorative T-shirts), we went for a late night snack at Gillie's, a Portsmouth landmark lunchcart/diner and then, since we were in the middle of a blizzard, to my squalid tiny apartment on the 3rd floor under a mansard roof. Bob lived on the other side of the state and Tom was temporarily living in Haverhill, MA. I said I didn't have much to offer, but I had a floor. Bob always carried a sleeping bag with him, so he camped out on the kitchen floor (probably with a cat on his face) for the night. I threw Tom a snugsack and a pillow.

The next morning there was a crisis -- not only did I only have ONE coffee cup, but, since I'm a tea drinker, there was no coffee. I had to go to work, but Tom had a snow day from his teaching job and used it to find a winter rental at Hampton Beach.

And he never actually moved out. This was about as close to love at first sight as I can imagine. So, for the rest of the winter we had my squalid apartment as our "Town House" and his squalid beach apartment as our "Beach Cottage" and over Fourth of July weekend we moved into his house in Nottingham just vacated by his soon-to-be ex-wife who had just finished remodeling a little house just up the road.

The next December 15th when we were sharing a bottle of champagne to celebrate having known each other for a year, we found ourselves planning our wedding. Tom never actually ASKED me to marry him.

The rest is history -- we've been married since June 26, 1982 (at the mercy of an academic schedule) and have been merrily making music and harmonizing together ever since. Bob Frost, by the way, was our best man and is still a good friend and part of our musical circle.

Izzat what happens when a musician follows you home and you feed him?!?

I walked 11 miles with my best friend to a folk club, then at the end of the evening begged a lift home (which my now husband Geoff gave us) this happened three months running. I then needed somewhere to go on a saturday night & rung Geoff up & asked if he was busy. He obliged by taking me to a carnival (which we both hated), then a drink. The evening of the next folk club I won Bob Dylan's album Highway 61 revisited which he really wanted so pestered me for a date. We married a year later & to this day (33 years) he says it is the most expensive album he has ever owned.

It was love at first sight. The love of my life was sitting demurely in a music shop in Worthing, quiet and still. I walked up to her, picked her up - and she had to be mine.

That Martin still is mine, thought I've had another and another since then. That's big o' me, I suppose.

(Gets coat).

Actually, in a pub. She was drinking pints and I fancied one meself.

August 9, 2006. A support group for widowed persons. It was my first meeting. I was telling my story to introduce myself and started to cry. Somebody went to get tissues and handed them to me. I looked up into the deepest blue eyes I had ever seen with a look of immense concern in them. We celebrate our first anniversary in 2 weeks.

I needed groceries and when I went through the checkout she said , "Hi. how are you?". I recognized her as an engineering student two years behind me. But, she smiled at me... and I knew. I put the groceries in my car and went back in. "I forgot to get sugar." The next time, I forgot flour. The third time, she said, "You should have made a list." I said, "The only real thing on my list is seeing your smile. May I see it again after you get off work?" She smiled and said, "Sure." I was smitten.

I asked her for her hand a year later and she said yes. I was to be employed as a Consultant Transportation Engineer and hoped teach at uni as well but my father was diagnosed with terminal cancer and I had to change plans... moving back home, a two hour drive away.

I requested that she follow me after she graduated and she said, "We'll see." I broke off the engagement, desperately wanting her to ask me not to do so. I will never forget her weeping as I left. She was the one and I think of her every day... for the last 28 years.

It went kinda like this...

I sat on the bar stool with never a care
I didn't know that I sat in her chair
That's when I fell in love
She sat down beside me and she cussed me out
I didn't know what she was talking about
That's when I fell in love

        Love, love, love oh love
I looked in her eyes and what did I see
I saw an angel looking at me
That's when I fell in love

She called me a liar I proved she was wrong
she bought me a drink and I sang her a song
That's when I fell in love
We sat in the bar 'till they closed it down
then hand in hand we walked through the town
That's when I fell in love

        Love, love, love oh love
I looked in her eyes and what did I see
I saw a woman looking at me
That's when I fell in love

At two in the morning we sat in the park
and sang to each other alone in the dark
That's when I fell in love
we sat the talking the rest of the night
'till the mountains turned red in the dawn's early light
That's when I fell in love

        Love, love, love oh love
I looked in her eyes and what did I see
I saw my true love looking at me
That's when I fell in love

        Love, love, love oh love
I looked in her eyes and what did I see
I saw my angel, my woman, my true love
        looking at me

In a department store. I was a recent graduate waiting for my time in the military, so a part time seasonal gig was the best I could do.
One day, the HR department brought a new employee to the Sporting Goods department. I took one look and "Boooom."
Still do not know how I convinced her to talk to me, then go out with me, etc, but she did and we are together today!

My school roommate from the 1961-1962 year married a schoolmate. They are the only people from those school days that I kept in touch with and got together with occasionally. They settled in Michigan, I settled in Chicago. In the summer of '82, I dropped over on vacation to visit them for a couple of dqys. He knew he had a prior commitment one evening, so I arrived to find that he had "set me up" for that evening. She put something in the crock pot, then forgot to plug it in. We ate together with her next door neighbors, who were grilling. Then a stupid movie at the little local theater, and a round of miniature golf. Then I hesitantly tried for a little kiss, and received a very big warm kiss.
Married since December of '83. 'Scuse me while I go try for a little kiss.

After two long term relationships while in my 20's, I was just enjoying the life I had. As a rep and manager for a Fortune 500, I was on the road constantly for almost ten years and my relationship with the opposite sex was pretty well relegated to the girls at the home office, the branch administrators, and a long line of one-nighters. I'm frankly ashamed to some degree that a lot of these women would be unrecognizable to me in the morning......and probably me to them also. In short, I'd given up ever finding the mate that I had expected I would find many years before. I had one cardinal rule. NEVER accept a blind date from some well meaning "matchmaker."

So.......Being ill and generally feeling awful, I had just finished a training session and one of the new hires walked in and said, "Pat, how would you like to meet a nice girl?" I was too tired to argue and after a few futile stabs at it, gave up and arranged to meet this "nice girl" on Thursday evening.

I had avoided blind dates for years. If you're past 25 and single, EVERYBODY is trying to fix you up. The woman brought her stepdaughter and I brought a friend to help bale me out of this mess. Twenty minutes into the conversation I was convinced that here was the woman I wanted to marry. We shuffled the two "chaperones" out the door after the first drink and spent the evening together talking long into the night.   We couldn't meet again until four days later and the first thing I did then was ask her to marry me...she accepted. I kinda' sensed it then but have since become certain I was marrying my best friend. Now I'm 61 and know for sure that I made the right choice. Luckily, she feels the same.

James Dickey in his novel "Deliverance" in describing the relationship one of his characters found with his wife said, "He didn't know what it was before, but he had been looking for a flame within.....and when he found it, or at least the spark, he married it."

I wasn't "looking" when I met Karen and if asked I could not have described what I was looking for......but I saw something in her, or at least a vestige of it, and I knew I had found the unknown thing I had always looked for..............No man ever loved a woman as I love Karen. She's my best friend and the greatest thing that ever happened in my life.

There was a band playing in a pub on the Isle of Wight 1994, I'd gone there with my son to drown my sorrows over the accidental death of my cat. We hadn't long moved there so I was particularly upset about it. Anyway a long haired man came in and I just had to say something, something made me want to stop him for that moment so I asked him the time, the band was due on at 9 and I wanted to plan the last bus home. After a while he sat on the corner of the table with his drink and I thought he was giving me a chat up line about astrology asking me what star sign I was. He went on to say that he drew up astrological charts and lo and behold he had these charts in his pocket he really meant it. After a while he asked me to mind his drink for 5 minutes (while he went to tell his friends about me on another table). And that was that, the beginning of a long wonderful relationship. I moved back to Bristol in 1997 but our friendship is as strong as ever, he is more than a boyfriend he is my very best friend and soul mate. We now travel around lot on his motorbike seeking new places, he comes over to me and we go out and about and have some great adventures. I will never regret asking him the time that night.

In the rabble singing the chorus harmonies at the back of Cheddar Folk Club.
I noticed this attractive lady who appeared to have come to the club with a mutual friend. I asked the friend about her and was told a few pertinent facts, such as she was a widow with three primary school age children who was just getting back into social life.
I dimly remembered her being there in the past with her deceased husband.
Being widowed myself I though that perhaps she would like to compare notes.
Seeing as she was looking more attractive by the minute I found myself asking if I could get her anything; tea, coffee, pregnant?

The unlikey chat up line must have worked!

That, 'Spaw, is the main thing -- not looking.

I had just come out of a 10 year roller coaster marriage (apprenticeship!) to an alcoholic who tried to kill me rather than see me leave. Believe me, I was NOT looking for either a relationship or for marriage when I met Tom. I was scared spitless of marriage and truly believed a woman (in particular) gave up way too many of her rights to even consider marriage.

Tom and I spent the first few days after we met talking and reading through my 3x5 file cards on which EVERYTHING (thoughts, quotations, notes) are written (about Life...the Universe...EVERYTHING).

Like I said, he never actually asked me to marry him. I think we were already married and had been for some time. Shows not only how much I love him, but how much I TRUST him for me to even consider doing the legal thing.

The true basis of a happy relationship is friendship, not romance or infatuation. If your wife or husband or boyfriend/girlfriend is also your true friend, then you have probably found the right partner.

J-boy and I met 12 years ago in a local bar. I was there for the house band, it was a very typical, noisy Friday night, and I noticed this guy off in a corner by himself reading. I was really curious as to what he was reading, so I went over and asked. He was reading Patrick O'Brien's Master and Commander, and we sat and talked about books that evening. We were both regulars, so we bumped into each other every Friday and Saturday and became friends. One night he asked me what I was doing the following day and I told him not much, probably just laundry. He then asked me if I maybe wanted to do something, something with him, but not really a date and he was looking out the window the whole time. I said sure and shocked him to no end. We ended up going to the Maine Maritime Museum and then out for Mexican food and we've been together ever since.

My wife and I met on a trolley bus.

LH is correct .... the foundation of true everlasting relationship is friendship. Though we are the same in many ways, my wife and I are different in so many ways. I feel our relationship would have not survived if we were only lovers.

My wife and I will have been married 40 years this coming April.

And I should add after all these years she still is the most beautiful women I have ever laid eyes on.

In a folk club - where else! He was single so had lots of time to practise and was a shit hot guitarist. I was madly impressed (although I was married to somone else at the time). When my marriage broke up we matched my singing voice to his musicianship - and 33 years later the rest, as they say, is history.

Ann worked in the office where I worked in the warehouse. We were both at the end of failed marriages and I asked her out. That was 21 years ago. We have just celebrated our 18th wedding anniversary.

I think I've posted this somewhere before, but here goes:

My Rog is my lucky charm as in third time's a charm! First marriage we were both too young, pregnant, and did what our parents and society said we should and I *thought* that was what I wanted. Who knew!? second time, I am convinced, was because my youngest daughter's little soul was knocking on the door saying "make me and let me come in" which we did, then split. There's more along similar lines as BatGoddess mentioned up thread.

So, I was a single mom, just going back to work. I had never done anything but nurses' aid and store-clerk work, when I went to my first job as an "account executive" (salesperson) at a local radio station on April 1, 1979, yes, April Fool's Day:-)

After being shown around the station and introduced to most of the employees, my day got sleepier and sleepier. I was so nervous the night before, I couldn't sleep, so my sisters gave me two valium! I'd never taken anything more than an aspirin in my life.

As my new boss, a very ineffective woman who would be gone by the end of my fist month, droned on about how to sell radio adverts, I kept nodding off from the tranquillizers. In an attempt to wake up and NOT lose my job the first day, I asked for coffee break. I went down the hall to a small alcove where there was a coffee pot and hot water carafe. As I was mixing up some hot chocolate, the engineer came out of his "cave" and asked me out on a date, just like that! I knew his name was "Roger" and had already thought I might be interested in him OR the other Roger whom I'd also met that day. Well, my Rog was quicker than the other, who it turned out was gay and also his best friend, later to become one of my best friends, too, so I said yes. That following weekend, we went to the North 40 for a fancy steak dinner (I wasn't a vegetarian, yet) and went dancing at the Beacon Club, a notorious county-music club. We went back to my little house, paid off the babysitter and sat up all night, talking about all things under the sun, then watched the sun come up. We both knew then, I think, but we were being careful as my divorce wasn't final and I didn't want to risk any problems with custody of my kids.

I *knew* for real about three months later when I had to convalesce from a nasty medical procedure. We left the kids with my sisters and Rog took me to the hot springs in Thermopolis, WY. While there, he hand fed me scrumptious cantaloupe, took me to a wonderful woman masseuse, and soaked in the wonderful springs with me. That is the first time he told me he loved me and, without saying much out loud, we started life together.

That was in the summer of 1979. We didn't get married until the following March after the big boss called us in and said since he knew we were living together, he guessed we might as well make it legal as they would wave their nepotism clause just for us! So, as soon as we got my income tax return, we scheduled a justice of the peace, got my ring out of layaway, bought some new outfits and were hitched. That same year, he adopted all three of my kids.

We will celebrate our 31st come next March and while he is not at all what I expected my life companion would be, I have come to realise he is exactly what is best for me and love him deeply.

And, I agree with Spaw and the others. There's a lot more to be said for friendship than the romance of movies.:-)

So I'm from the internet generation here ... had been on my own for far too long and was in the middle of writing a novel. Wanted to put some raunchy scenes in it but wasn't sure I could (a) remember and (b) write about it all convincingly, so I went on line actually looking for all that sex they say is out there on the web but which had passed me by up until then. Found a site with various chatrooms, some more upfront and blatant than others. Made up a profile for myself and discovered I could indeed write about it .. and then started to notice some regulars, some of whom had quite a spark of originality. Started to frequent one particular chatroom and made some good friends - some were in the UK, some in the US, some in Canada. But there were real meetings and I met up with some of the regulars in the UK and, indeed, in the US as well. Started meeting some of the online "dates" for real, always being sure to be safe and let a good friend know where I was going and who I was meeting. Called the dates "auditions" and it felt a bit like that - met a lot of people, some of whom were totally unsuitable, some of whom were OK but none of whom grabbed my emotions or my heart. It was fascinating, though. Told my good friend I was obviously not going to find my soul-mate by doing this but that it was fun. And a week after saying that, into the chatroom came someone who had more than the usual spark of originality. Noticed from his profile that he came from my home town and was interested in many of the same things as me, so sent him a little personal message. We chatted on the phone the next night for hours and almost immediately he asked what I was doing the following Monday. He drove 150 miles to meet me in London that day ... armed with a stack of videos to prove he was who he'd said he was, and with no undue expectations of what would come next ... and he drove home again that night. But I still remember the moment when I saw him standing waiting to meet me by the pub and the way something inside me said a huge, echoing, "YES" when I saw him, and how once we'd met I had absolutely no interest in any of my other "auditions". We spent 18 months rattling up and down the motorway to see each other, spending as much time as possible together, and then I moved from London back to Wales to be closer to him. Our meeting was nine years ago, our wedding was six years ago and he is, simply, the best thing that's ever happened to me.

at Sandbach folk club in 1982. I was singing with a great ragtime guitarist called phil Brightman at the time. Part way through the first song, I spotted a gorgeous looking fellah grinning at me. My toes curled....and now we have two lovely daughters and a band!

A vegetarian dating site. Three years in and we're best friends. We've had strong disagreements but no fights . . .

My ex fell in love with the bus driver on her route. Very cute.

Banjo lessons -- the style you can sing with. True-Love was teacher, I was student. We'd both been singers all our lives. He'd wandered around the world with a guitar and a back-pack. Amazing that he ended up in Australia.
Years went by before we realized we'd always been in love. 1978 we met.
Cheers, Joy

I met that bastard Chongo 37 years ago. I was with some of my buddies from the NSG and we was moving contraband hooch across the lake from Canada, about 4500 gallons of "Moose Juice", as we call it...damn good stuff. Sells great in Chicago. Anyways, me and the other lads was just tyin' up at the dock around 3 AM when the lousy little chimp gets the drop on us with a loaded Thompson. Smilin' Albert goes for his gat and Chongo lets fly with a burst that knocks him right off the boat. The rest of us froze. Smilin' Albert is thrashin' around in the water as the cops close in from all sides.

"I'll get you for this, you lousy little chimp freak!" I say to Chongo, and he just grins at me..."Enjoy your stay in the can, Alfred! Don't forget to write."

I swore that someday I would wipe that smile off his ugly face.

3 years later I met him in a bar in West Chicago. He was drinkin' whisky and playin' poker with 3 baboons. I went for him with a pool cue and busted it right over his head, but he come back at me with a kick that drove my gonads up into my occipital lobe and then he busted a chair over my head. I woke up lyin' in the alleyway, and there was a damn stray dog peein' on my leg!!! I still walk funny to this day from that kick, and it is all on account of Chongo!

5 years after that we had Chongo in our grasp and we tied him to a telephone pole out in the sticks and sat around talkin' about how we was gonna roast him alive there and leave him there for the buzzards. We would have done it too, but along comes some of his flatfoot pals and they bust us instead. I get charged with kidnappin' and get put in the slammer for 20 years with time off for good behaviour.

I got out in 1996. First thing I did was look up Chongo. I went to his office and had a little talk with him. I told him I was gonna let him sweat for awhile, wonderin' what I was gonna do to him. He laughed at me.

That was 14 years ago. I been biding my time, but this gorilla does not forget to fulfill a contract. That miserable little fleabitten bowlegged simp chimp is gonna go down, and he is gonna go down hard. It will not be nice. It could happen any day. When it does happen, the story of this star-crossed simian "couple" will be complete, and Big Alfred will have the last laugh for all time.

Thanks for the tip, dumbass. I have a couple of little items here with your name on them, and I can always use a little excitement. Be sure to wipe yer feet before you use the stairs and wash yer paws before you knock too. I hate havin' a messy place. Knock 3 times, okay? So I know it's you...

We met through the Mudcat - started PMs after Kendall saw a post of mine that interested him. When he came to the UK almost a year later that was it.

We've been married now for six years and, yes, I do think that you need to be friends even more than lovers.

Cooking is one of the 2 or 3 most important things in life as far as I'm concerned (and I like to cook). Having not married, I have had good reason to learn to like it... ;-)
