Gurney you are probably right, if you think about it these were guy that were getting ready to go hunt the whales ... probably lots of drink and food and bars ... probably is the way it was originally sung.

Hi, OD. I like the song sung in a hard, shouting manner. As if bawling over the noise in a pub, or out-of-doors.
Even Georgiansilver's pick is a little bit arty for me. But nearer to my taste.
When you do make a 'fair copy,' though, do garnish the QUAY with bonnie lasses! I imagined them floating away....:-)

thank you, One thing I do that I have to work on is to just sing- for some reason even in Irish songs I start to go into accents from time to time and that drives me crazy. I don't have an accent other than the hills :-) and sometime I listen and say .. where the heck did that come from LOL ... good catch my friend ... Spaw says I get anal about my songs .. I guess I do, I just try to get them as right and I can personally and I always appreciate the ear of a friend.

I liked your version olddude. I thought the tempo about right but at the end of the day, you have to interpret the song as you feel it.

One hint, though. I think it would be better to pronounce "Peterhead" as it is spelt rather than "Peterheed" The locals will say "Peterheed", but their accent would be consistent with that. My Mother was from Aberdeen (just down the coast) and she normally said "Peterhead" as did my Grandmother. Your saying "Peterheed" kind of stood out. Not wrong, but it just did not fit with your natural accent.

I have not listened to the other versions. I have heard it done before, at a much faster tempo. I like it at the pace you set, Dan, and I don't see why you're complaining about your banjo. It sounds clean and just fine to me, esp. as your voice if stronger than it, so not overwhelmed. Thanks for posting!

At the risk of villified here as a 'traddie' I still like the temp etc of version from way way back by the then new young folk group The Waterson Family
Unfortunately the recording on you tube appears to be damaged as little chunks are missing :(

Thanks folks, this is my issue, is this a fast paced tempo or a bit more mellow ...how should it really be played? ... I don't want to jazz it up as it is folk like I do with st. James infirmary ... want to try to do it right if there is such a thing as right ... LOL I suspect I will know it when I feel it or hear it ... hard to explain hmmmmm

The version that I learned (in 1966!) was by Alex Campbell, on the album called either "Folk Session" or "Alex Campbell Sings Folk" depending on which label released it and when. The album is available at "Time Has Told Me" (http://time-has-told-me.blogspot.com/2007/10/alex-campbell.html)as a download, BUT, very unfortunately, where "The Bonny Ship the Diamond" SHOULD appear, "The Gresford Disaster" is repeated -so no help there, then! However, if you can find a copy of that album, or if any Mudcatter has one, it's worth a listen. (I have the LP, but I have no facility to rip it to mp3.)

I post this because I just re-recorded it to push the vocals forward. Does anyone have a really good version by someone of this song ... I am not happy with the way I do it my friends. I am no five string banjo player either ... play it more like a geetar so I have to learn to clawhammer. Gosh I wish I had Jerry's skill or Franks or Art's. Anyhow, I need a version Not the corries ok ...
