"Vote Republican" by Roy Zimmerman

For the next sing-along you want to conduct.

You could follow it with

I Didn't Fuck It Up

I wish the first one weren't so true! Great song. And, of course, the second one is darn right a blast to sing-a-long to!

Amos posted a link to another of this guy's songs over at MOAB. We'll have to see what else he has done.

I've always disliked political hate speech masquerading as folk music, regardless of whether I like or dislike the target of the song. Songs that badmouth and/or ridicule people, parties, and movements are only enjoyable to those who hate the same people as the singer does. It's a mob-mentality propaganda device, a tool for unifying opposition against a common enemy by using the most primal of human groupthink emotions: hatred of the other. Its a version of 1984's "Two-Minute Hate" done to music.

Tell us what you really think, Taconicus.

Songs that badmouth and/or ridicule people, parties, and movements are only enjoyable to those who hate the same people as the singer does.

No one said hate. I don't hate the GOP, but I think there are some very selfish and short-sighted individuals trying to legislate so they can get as much as possible and share as little as possible. They have no intent to look out for the rest of the population.

That is a song that uses the party's own claims against them. How do you consider that "hate speech?"

One can only presume that you're an adherent of the GOP.

If it makes you feel better about the practice, replace "hate" with "dislike" and replace "hate speech" with "political attack."

Regarding your presumption about which party I'm "an adherent of," two comments: First, how are a person's political leanings relevant to whether their arguments are valid? Second, I feel exactly the same way about "protest songs" directed against Democrats. My country is currently being torn apart by angry polarization, and I don't like it. That's my opinion. Whether you like it is up to you.

Of course, there are some groups against whom I'm perfectly happy to hear this kind of song. I completely approve of hate speech against Nazis, for instance, because I hate them. While I quite often disagree with both Democrats and Republicans, I don't hate them and I prefer civil discourse to invective.

A great deal of folk music is issue-related, some of it vehemently so. I don't think you're going to find a lot of sympathy for that argument.

While I think the song is well done -- and well performed! -- I do mostly agree with Taconicus. That is NOT to rain on your parade; I would hope people continue to make and enjoy the songs that "do something" for them. So my response is personal preference. And it's that these kind of things seem a bit like "conditional humour" -- Polish jokes and the like. Some people will get a big kick out of Polish jokes, whereas others are not able to agree to the condition that makes them funny. I might be someone that can see *why* a Polish joke is funny, and appreciate how it works well within the dictated rules of a genre. But if the premise of those rules is either ridiculous or objectionable, then they will not be my cup of tea.

In this case I object to the techniques of demonizing, essentializing, mud-slinging, selective evidence, etc etc that is the condition for making parodies of people belonging to different political parties. Even if I disagree with many/most of the policies of that party, I don't believe in attacking its members with these techniques.

Again, this is not to jump in and rank on your musical example, but it is to voice that there *is* sympathy for the argument.

SRS has defined that ANY arguement she does not a-priori agree with is invalid, so this is a meaningless statement.

don't think that's true. Did Tom Robinson's song Glad to be Gay - ever make it to the USA? Tom used to say - you can tell the straight people in the room - they're the only ones singing the chorus.
