Worlds of Trad Upload. October 2010

I've finally managed it. After much sweat toil, tears and many loud curses I've at last managed to upload the latest edition of Worlds of Trad. Apologies for being even later than usual, but I ran into even more problems than usual. Plus, I've just bought a brand new state of the art computer, and guess what? None of my software would run on it!

In any event, cyberspace is once more buzzing with sounds rich and rare from around the globe. In particular Gatemouth Brown, Noah Lewis, Donal Thibodeaux, Big Joe Williams, The Skillet Lickers, The Original Dixieland Jazzband, Lonnie Johnson and Brenda Stubbert regale us with more songs and tunes about the devil and hell; we seek the sanctuary of Heaven's Radio with Molly O'Day & The Cumberland Mountain Folks; and Alex Bradford and Chris Barber take us on the Highway to Heaven.

We say a fond farewell to veteran musicians John Campbell of Cape Breton and Joe Whelan of Co. Offally, Ireland; Frankie Armstrong, Jim Eldon and John Campbell of Co. Cavan, Ireland sing of courageous and crafty maidens; L.M. Hilton brings us a couple more Mormon folksongs; and we sample the only LP ever made of sea shanties sung as work songs aboard a sailing ship under full sail.

All these and much, much more can be found by going straight to the station player at .

On the other hand, you can bring up the station page first. Click on . Then roll the mouse over the face near the top of the screen and click the grey PLAY button when it appears. Then, if you press the little PLUS sign to the right of where it says Worlds Of Trad, you can save Worlds of Trad as a preset. That will save you having to search the next time you listen in.

Happy Listenings,

Fred McCormick.

Every time Fred posts his new upload I add a message to all 'Catters urging them not to miss it. I'm doing so again. It is the most wideranging traditional music programme to be heard anywhere. I am constantly surprised (and delighted) by some of the things I hear on this show. If you love traditional music, or have only the faintest idea about it, give ear to Fred's choices and have your horizons widened. Brilliant Fred. If only you could be on the BBC.

Slight point of pedanticity ...

The 'only' lp of shanties recorded on board a windjammer ... ??

Could this claim really be true? Or is it a case of folks claiming authenticity simply because the songs were sung and recorded on board a tall ship at sea? I always considered American shanty singing - sorry chanty singing - as being rather more choral than the more down to earth styles from Europe and the UK.

CJB (slightly playing devil's advocate)

Burl and Will. Many thanks as always. Keep enjoying.

Chris. Sorry if I didn't make myself clear. I wouldn't be the least surprised if there were other LPs of shanties recorded aboard ship. However, as far as I know it is the recording where the shanties were used to accompany/co-ordinate work aboard ship in the time honoured manner.

That, to my mind, does not make the performances 100% reliable; the crew of the Unicorn was probably fitter, better fed, better clad, better motivated, and using lighter materials than would have been the case with their forebears. And the recording was presumably done in better weather than would have been encountered round Cape Horn. Even so, the LP is probably the best guide we have as to what shanties sounded like in their natural environment.

BTW., if anyone tried to log onto Worlds of Trad yesterday, and couldn't, my apologies. For some strange reason some of the tracks went out of sequence and I spent several infuriating hours taking the programme down and then putting it back up again *****. (expletive deleted.)
