Well, I have seen a magazine called 'Ubuntu' aimed at new users. Mostly you will need to either find a local user group (search the net) or basically rely on Internet chat groups, etc. There is some online help, and also some help built into the system.

If you have only been a MS Windows user, you will find the learning curve very steep, (and it will take some time - though it's a good investment!) as the way things are done is more related to 'mainframe thinking' rather that one user PCs. If you have ever used a big multi-user mainframe, you may already know some of the concepts, and if you used DOS, you have a few minor similarities.

If you go to a library and grab a few basic books on almost any Linux system you will find the basic concepts - most flavors of Linux use the same basic underlying code - but the physical implementation is where installation hangups can occur. Currently I cannot install Lucid 10.04 on my Toshiba AMD V120 laptop, but the cutting edge 'Maverick' build apparently works, though I don't wish to take that path, I wish to use the LTS (long term stable) release.

I am going to become an Ubuntu user in about 5 days -- I just ordered a new (well, refurbished) computer with Ubuntu installed. What do I need to know? What do I need to do? I think maybe I need some veteran Linux guru to take me under their wing and teach me the ropes.

(I don't know what version it will be, frankly.)

(We have about 6 or 7 computers at home and they're all running XP. I just got fed up with MS and finally decided to make the leap with my newest puter.)

The binary of 101010 equates to 42--the answer to Life, the Universe and Everything. So the Ubuntu boys are on the right track. They got as far as 20, anyway!!

Actually I meant if 10.10 was due.

10.04 wasn't too bad - there has been a run of 'back-patches' which would now make sense if the 10.04 was to be released.

One hassle was that 10.04 would not install on a Toshiba with the AMD V120 chip - apparently the bleeding edge daily release fixed that, but that has not yet been fed back.

It has been announced that the latest update to Ubuntu, version 10.10 will officially be released on 10 October 2010 (10/10/10).

Since I haven't used it, I'll leave it to those who have to decide whether they should update.

The Extreme Tech report on the release seems to say that most of the main changes are aimed at "portable" aps, and other new fads.

There has been some fairly recent comment from the AV people that a couple of "vulnerabilities" would be patched in the "next release," but that may have been done with the "interim version" that came out last April(?).

John
