Salt water. Flush yer sinuses and rinse and gargle. Lots of fruit... LOTS of fruit. Wrap yourself in towels and blankets and sweat. Pinch your nose with a clothes pin or stuff it with tissue for as long as you can(this is the key for a cold as the rise in temp kills the beasties). Drink as much fruit juice and water as you can.

As you do not take alcohol I shant talk about the rest of the magic cure. Alcohol is not just a killer of "germs", it helps you endure the rest of the cure.

It does work.... within 72 hours, as long as it's a cold.

Dissolve a full package of Hall's original flavor cough drops into a quart of the cheapest, nastiest, whiskey you can find.

Tell yourself that if you don't get better fast you'll drink it.

Alternately, what gnu said. You can get saline nasal solution at the drugstore and, if you can take it, dextromethropan to suppress the cough. I find Mucinex or its generic works quite well, too.

I am not against taking a nip ... I just don't do that on any type of regular basis .. Occasional scotch or Jack Daniels ( usually in 2-3 year increments in between however) I know I know .. I am boring but if it helps this dang cold .. gimme the bottle LOL

I think I am also going to brew up a pine needle tea ... yup white pine needles are the best .. they have 6 times the vitamin C as oranges .. going to try a shot or two of Jack Daniels in it ... If I were in the woods I would brew me up some Pine needles so I suspect I give er a try. along with your salt water up the nose thing

I use echanasea sometimes. Usually, I use Neo-Citron, cough drops,
and tea. I recently had cold, and I used a no-name version of Neo-Citron, which was easier on my wallet. That was a good find, because I'm prone to colds. I get multiple colds per year.

Take vitamin C 4 times a day, 500 mg each time. Twice a day take a zinc tablet too. Oil of oregano if you have it on hand.

And lots of fluid, whatever way you can stand.

Flush nose with water or saline, whether spray, neti pot, or even just steam from a sink or shower or hot drink.

Avoid stuff that 'dries up' your head, that's the last thing you want, flush that crud out with water and steam.

Seriously, I usually get a nasty infection of some sort in January. It's an annual thing, and it's gotten so that my allergist prescribes a course of prednisone and Avalox when I go for my annual checkup (mild COPD). That way I don't have to bother him when it hits. Of course, if it hangs on I WILL bother him!

If for some reason I wouldn't get my annual "thing" I'll shred the prescriptions.

It's good when the doctor trusts you.

If it is in your head or partially in your head, try a Netti pot.

It seems a little bizzare the first time you use it but man that clears it out.

I got mine at Walmart.

An accidental discovery some years ago.

Scene: the kitchen; I have a horrid cold, and am feeling like death, but I am making onion rings (why? I must be deranged) by dipping onion slices in milk, then flour, then deep frying them.

I finish the job and start clearing up. There's a cup containing the remaining milk which, being of the immediate post-war generation who learned never to throw away any sort of food, I drink.

There follows a 5-minute interlude of streaming eyes, coughing, spluttering, bumping into walls, and general over-acting that would get you slung out of the cheapest soap opera.

When sanity returns my cold has fled.

I have never had the gall to repeat the cure, but I have used the thought of it like Rapaire's "Halls&Whiskey Threat" cure above.

*hot lemon juice, add boiling water and honey to make it palatable

*sage tea, great for sore throats. again, add honey

*steam inhalation. particularly with a drop of peppermint oil

*plenty of fluids

*garlic, onions, and spicy food generally. My favourite is garlic pickle with everything. No-one will come near you but then again, if you have a really bad cold they'd be best off avoiding you.

last and certainly not least:
*GET PLENTY OF REST

Too late for you now but before the cold/flu season starts I always take Buccaline Berna.
In some countries BUCCALINE may also be known as: Desicol, Virulizin, Festal , Hepa-Desicol.
It means I can fight the bugs off much easier. (I have the 'flu injection too.)
A cheap cough medicine is made by chopping up an onion and sprinkling raw sugar on it. Leave it for awhile (overnight) then tip the juice out and take it on a spoon. Add more sugar for the next dose. It's not unpleasant but it keeps the family away.

hi Dan

My usual "medication" is a "whisky Mac".

This is equal measures of Scotch Whisky and Ginger Wine. Very nice to take and I find it does help.

If that fails drink the rest of the bottle of whisky.....when you wake up you will have such a headache that you will forget you ever had a cold...lol

Cheers

An onion left in honey overnight. In the morning throw the onion away and drink the honey. Sounds horrible I know but that's what the old cure in the west of ireland was according to my brother-in-law. I mentioned it to a friend of mine whose father is a race horse trainer . My mother tried lots of things on us when we were children.

*Onion tea: boil onions, add sugar, drink hot (or at least warm).

*Some sort of pink paste that was spread on a clean square of cloth and taped to our chests.

*Vicks Vap-o-rub in a pot of boiling water on a hot plate.

*CreoTurpine cough medicine.

*Hot toddies made with honey and 4 Roses/7 Crown whiskey (always popular!).

I think that if she heard of something she would try it....

My family has two remedies. The first is reasonably massive quantities of hot and sour soup from our local Chinese place, which scares the germs away.

Then there is my personal favorite. Heat a big cup of cranberry juice cocktail (not one of those foofoo fruit blands; it has to be straight cranberry, preferably sweetened with sugar but if HFCS-sweetened is all you can find, don't worry; it still works) to near boiling in the microwave. Then add a glug of gin and a big squeeze of fresh lemon juice. Repeat as needed. Does absolute wonders.

Get bettah quick!

A cup of boiling water and to this water add a few slices of lemons (actually I found fresh lemon slices better then lemon juice). Then sip this slowly and let all the steam rise up into your nose while you slowly sip the boiled water/lemon drink.

Try to buy the tissues that are calle "Extra soft" or "lotion tissues" as they help in preventing the rawness under your nose from blowing so much.

Kleenex brand in the states has these particular ones that make it more soothing when you have to blow your nose so much. I don't know if the Kleenex brand is available in UK but you probably have the same type of tissues under a UK brand.

Hope you feel better soon. Bed rest & don't go to work when you feel like this.

Extra Vitamin C will just give you bellyache. It won't touch your cold and you'll just excrete the vitamin. You just have to sit out colds. Just don't do anything stupid like expose yerself to wildly-varying temperatures. When I smoked my colds lasted weeks and I got all that grotty after-stuff. Not smoking helps hugely. The best suggestion here is the copious Laphroaig. I'll go one better and suggest that for the duration you trade up to the quarter-cask, and hold the water.

My senior year in high school I came down with a nasty cold right before I was scheduled to read Walt Whitman's "Carol of Harvest" in the Thanksgiving program. My colds always head straight for my throat, and I was afraid of losing my voice. I drank copious quanitities of tea made from Eucalyptus and Pepperment. It tasted foul! But I kept my speaking voice.   I've never been able to do that to myself again.

Beware of antibiotics like Avelox. It is one brand of fluoroquinolone antibiotics that include Cipro, Levaquin.

I had a bad infection and they gave me Avelox and it screwed up my left leg. It is weak and my knee is sore almost all the time. It has been a year and a half and the problem has not gone away.

This is especially true for people 60 or older. Some people have dropped dead after taking it. Demand a regular antibiotic.

Beware RX CIPRO, LEVAQUIN & AVELOX: Adverse Reactions

Thousands of persons who were prescribed AVELOX, LEVAQUIN and /or CIPRO much to their detriment are suffering terribly. Drs. are ignoring patients very significant physical pain.

Doctors are mistakenly and incompetently diagnosing anxiety and depression when the ADVERSE REACTIONS to CIPRO, LEVAQUIN, and AVELOX were the primary presenting symptoms.

Some Doctors stupidly prescribe another floroquinolones after the first kind caused an adverse reaction.

Have just managed to stave off a cold I felt coming on two nights ago (touch wood). Left choir practice at halftime (ignoring the little voice that said "Just stick it out, another hour or so won't hurt..."), went home & slept for 14 hours; got up and et chicken soup (it's not a myth -- check out Chicken soup is medicine, U.S. scientists confirm), slept some more, et more chicken soup, slept again & today feel all right -- no runny nose or chest infection, huzzah!

I find that home-made (i.e. not from a tin) soup is what does the job for me, although -- according to the article -- some tinned soups performed as well as (or even better than) the homemade soup. Here's the list of brand name soups he tested, in order of how effective they were in slowing the progress of colds and flu (note: "Grandma's Soup" is the home-made (by his wife) soup):

    * Knorr's Chicken Flavor Chicken Noodle
    * Campbell's Home Cookin' Chicken Vegetable
    * Campbell's Healthy Request Chicken Noodle
    * Lipton Cup-O-Soup, Chicken Noodle
    * Progresso Chicken Noodle
    * Grandma's Soup
    * Health Valley 100% Natural Chicken Broth
    * Healthy Choice Thick and Heart Country Vegetable
    * Progresso Hearty Vegetable and Pasta
    * Campbell's Vegetarian Vegetable
    * Campbell's Vegetable Soup with Beef Stock
    * Health Valley Fat Free Garden Noodle
    * Cup O' Noodles, Oriental Nissin
    * Campbell's Ramen Noodles, Chicken Flavor

I found that list here, as well as the recipe for the homemade chicken soup it was tested against (scroll down the page a bit).

Here are a couple more interesting links: Herbal Immune System Soup Recipe: a great cold home remedy and flu home remedy and Chicken & Miso Soup Recipe (haven't tried these myself but they look like they might be well worth a try).

Good luck!

One should treat a cold with the contempt it deserves.

To that end, I have devised the following *contempt cocktail*.

Mix, in proportions according to taste & conscience:
Orange juice (in memory of Linus Pauling)
    Dark rum
    Bitters
    Lemon extract
    Ice

Do you cook with the coconut oil, or rub it on your chest like the goose grease?

I use echinacea at the first sign of a cold, and usually the cold goes away without causing too much trouble.
I also take echinacea pre-emptively in early September because there is always an outbreak of colds shortly after the children go back to school and let their germs mingle.

It's been 4 days, which is about twice my norm. And antihistamines at night neither clear my nose nor make me sleep (I suspect interaction with my other drugs [rxs]). Hot chicken broth with lemon and hot sauce feels marvy but does not actually help. Help? What else ya got?

Push fluids. Rest. Stay away from other people as much as possible. Take what my dear old sergeant called "Tincture of Time".

Not kidding.

Yer typical cold is a virus, so drugs are effective only to relieve some of the symptoms, if you're lucky. If the antihistamines aren't helping, try inhaling mentholated steam (what we did before antihistamines were invented). Also gargling with salt water, and snuffling salt water (warm, don't be a hero) up your nose.

Most of all, stay home and rest. Read, watch TV, maybe try a little light dusting -- but nothing more energetic than that!

And drink lots of warm liquid. Tea. Soup. Water hot from the tap. Doesn't really matter what it is, but avoid caffeine, which agitates and has a dehydrating effect. Fluid helps your cough, keeps your mucosa moist, and generally makes you feel better -- and does no harm.

Thanks. Also comforting is the really hot compress (burn your hands) on the nose/forehead. But it cools so quickly, and I can't talk my kid into pouring boiling water on my face every half-hour, wonder why.

I have a Pi Party tomorrow. Don't think I'll make it. And I was going to try one of those pasta poes where you stand the rigatoni up and try to fill them with sauce...

Of late I have been walking a lot, especially since the UK had had such a mild winter (I nearly wrote Summer!). Managed to avoid a lot of rain one way or another. Nose constantly drips, and I always have a stash of those little packets of tissues, buy them dozen a pop. And I haven't had much more than a deep voice for a year.

This is much like a colleague once told me how he trained for marathons daily and never had a cold per se, just constant sniffles. Until he had to stop and he suffered the mother of all colds.

What might be happening is that you are exposed to every thing going at an early stage and in doses that the immune system can keep up with. So the immune system sees all the evolutions of the bugs as they spread. I also use public transport a lot and dance every Saturday - more exposure.
