Subject: Getaway 2010 audio-video-Glass half full
From: Genie
Date: 11 Oct 10 - 04:09 PM

Starting this separate thread for two or three reasons:

1. We (various and sundry paparazzi) got some really nice audio and video recordings, but in many cases there's either some jiggling of the video (hand-held cam-corders) or some sound distortion (different performers singing at different volumes and distances from the mics) or static (e.g., from my MacBook).   I hope we can appreciate and enjoy the mp3s and videos we did get, as mementos of the Getaway, and not focus on the often not-ready-for-prime-time quality of the recordings.

For several months now I've had intermittent static - and sometimes a total lack of recorded sound - with the videos I make using the built-in mic on my MacBook.    I believe it's due to loose and/or dirty connections inside the laptop and I'm going to have to bite the bullet and take it in for tech service.

I thought I had it pretty much under control for videoing the concerts, if I just made sure not to move the laptop or its chair during the performances.   But with so many people singing along, tapping feet and moving about, you can't prevent vibrations from jostling the laptop a bit from time to time.

Sad to say, on Saturday evening, the laptop was recording both video and sound just fine during the setup, as well as during the second half of the concert (after the break), but it stopped recording sound just as the first act (Glyn Collinson) was introduced and it recorded only video - no audio - for the entire first half of the concert. Glyn's performance, Amiel's, Bobert's Blues Band, the mummers' play, etc., all came out as silent movies!
Then, somehow - I guess because someone bumped the computer again during the break - it started recording sound again and the second half of that concert has sound.   As does the Sunday evening concert.

There is some static - sometimes a lot - on some of the videos. I've edited some of them where possible - e.g., if there's a good clean chorus on the video I've substituted that for one or two that were staticky - but in most cases I can't. Perhaps there is an audio-video processing software that's affordable that will let you "digitally remaster" bad audio, but I haven't found one yet.

2. Rather than PM everyone individually to ask permission to post the videos, I'd greatly prefer to have everyone who was in the concert PM or email me to say one of the following:

---A. Go ahead and post the videos of me on YouTube as "public". (Also let me know if you want me to enable "Embedding" on other sited.)
---B. Please let me see and hear my video first; then I'll tell you if I want it public.
---C. No, don't post my video on YouTube or any other website at all.

Also, I like to include songwriter credits, correct spelling of performers' names, copyright dates, and correct song titles on videos, so if you were in the concerts, please send me that info too.

3. Since individual posts of links to YouTubes soon get lost in the ongoing discussion threads, here's the easiest way to find the videos that have been posted as "public" on YouTube:
Do a search for "FSGW Getaway 2010" under the category of "Music."   If the performers are also Mudcatters and I know that, I'll also have tagged them as "Muddcatter."

(Note: If you search for "Mudcat" you will get umpteen gazillion listings that have nothing to to with music or mudcat.org. (It'll be videos about fish, marine dredging equipment, and maybe a few performers or sports figures with the nickname "Mudcat.")

The others who took videos at Getaway may want to post something here about how people should let them know their preferences re making them public too.

I hope we can make this as simple as possible.

Genie-

I do hate it so when the technology breaks down. When we're doing recording at home we have a dedicated laptop with only the recording software installed; that eliminated some of the weird things which used to happen.

I'm assuming that the song I led didn't have any sound; I was near the end of the first set.

Kendall, you're not shackled by modesty? That's so hard to believe!

Sad to say, Charley, your performance came out as a silent movie. I can send you a video file and you might be able to overdub it. (I could overdub it, but it would sound like me instead of you.).

Chance, you and Susette came out as mimes too, unfortunately. But the same goes for my sending you the soundless video. (Fortunately, Amos got some good audio/video of you and Susette last year which is up at YouTube, and maybe someone caught your music in the Peace Cabin or workshops too. There were a lot of camcorders hovering around here and there.

Hey Genie--

Feel free to post anything you got on me at the Getaway. I performed Sunday. My song, Roll Big Sandy Roll, is by Craig Johnson. I do not believe it was copyrighted-- it was very early in his career and slipped into disuse.

Lisa, your Big Sandy song came out fine. And Craig's song was copyright protected the minute he wrote it. (The trick, if you don't register your copyrights, can be proving that you created the work and when.)    Anyway, I'll put that attribution on the video (if I haven't already.)

Jacqui, if you can email me the mummer's play script and the names of all the cast members (not sure which lovely lady it was under all those veils), I can put subtitles on the mime show.
(If any of the cast remember their ad libs and send them to me, I'll use those instead.)

I'd like to put the song titles and credits on the videos, including the soundless ones, so if you were in the first half of the concert Saturday evening, please post that info here or PM it to me.

Need song titles and credits for these concert performances:

~Jed Marum - Saturday night with Glyn Collinson (and is Glyn's instrument an octave mando or something else?)

~David Ingerson - Saturday night

~Lucy Ann Goldberg - need names of her accomplice..., er, accompanists and also the song credits

~The French horn player's name and the name of the piece.

~Wendy Grossman's "fractured fairy tale" song by Bill Steel(e)?

And anyone else who performed in the Saturday night concert (especially the second half) and thinks their names (correct spelling), song titles, and authorship credits may not be patently obvious from the videos.

For some reason those small recorders just can't handle the 12 string guitar. It sounds like only a few of the notes are coming out.

Anyway, it wasn't as bad as I thought when we were doing it.

I wonder if a small external condenser mic would handle the laptop sound issue, Genie. Worth a try.

Subject: RE: Getaway 2010 audio-video-Glass half full
From: Genie
Date: 12 Oct 10 - 05:27 PM

I was thinking of that, Amos. Not just because of problems with the internal mic but because it's often logistically awkward to position the laptop so as to optimize the sound pickup.
(I'd actually like to use an external camera too, for similar reasons, but I DK if I can afford that.)
In any case, when cats decide it would be fun to knock laptops off of tables and TSA personnel do things that result in your backpack/laptop-case falling off the conveyer belt to the floor, etc., you probably need to take the baby in for an MRI or heart transplant or at least a good teeth cleaning.

Kendall, I've noticed that many recordings done with camcorders, laptops, and even condenser mics often don't pick up guitars with true-to-life sound, even when the guitar is miked (as opposed to a DI, which can often yield distortion in the recording).   There's a reason why the big-time musician have whole vans full of audio toys and an army of sound techs.   There's one video -- the one where Bob Clayton is backing Claire Parmelee (sp?) -- where the vocals came out fine but I can't hear Bob's guitar at all. Maybe they didn't have the guitar mic in the right position?

But you're right, Kendall. I can see that you're playing a 12-string, but it sounds like a 6-string.

---

PS
Martha Burns's sing-along on Railroading On the Great Divide will be up at YouTube presently.    I did some clever (OK, strictly amateurish) editing to make up for the horrendous static there was in many places on the live recording. I think it came out looking and sounding pretty good.

Well, he is that, Rap. : D

Charley, I'll check with Dennis, but I kind of doubt he was recording or I think Jennifer would have aknlowledged that along with telling everyone that I was videoing the concert.

I do think, though, that maybe some of the various camcorder elves who caught songs in workshops and cabins might possibly have videoed some of the performances in the concert. Let's see if I (we) can find a way to put the word out that we would like to know if anyone did. (Not all attendees are Mudcatters and not all Mudcatters check in at the forum often.)

BTW Big Mick and Donna Fletcher are also up at YT, but Donna's is still unlisted (so you can't find it) until she tells me it's OK to go public with it. Big Mick's is public. (He's easy that way.)

Genie, would you have any objection to this thread being combined with the other Getaway memories thread? It is all of a piece, and I don't fancy having to go to two threads to see the videos and follow the comments.

If you don't object, maybe a clone could combine the two threads?

It's up to Joe and the clones, Janie. But the other thread is so all-inclusive and long that I feared the links and things pertinent to the videos would be missed by way too many people amid all the posts about photos, general memories, etc.   That's why I wanted a thread specifically about the audio-video files -- the ones for which we promised to get permissions before sharing.

I do think there should be links to these two threads at the top of each other, though.

I'm really, really sorry I wasn't at the Saturday concert--for all sorts of reasons.

I even got called on it at the Sunday concert. I should have at least said that Maestro Eschenbach sends his love.

But the horn player Saturday was Fred Sailer, (son of Peter Sailer, longtime FSGW stalwart and leader of the Allan-a Dale madrigal group.) Fred was accompanied by Dottie Hurley. I understand the piece was a movement from one of Mozart's 4 horn concertos. I believe it was the 3rd concerto, but I'll confirm this with Peter, Fred, or Dottie.

Allan-a-Dale Singers for purposes of the concert) were Peter, Laura (Fred's mom, who did the song Sunday night about people getting out of prison), Tim Slattery, and Miriam Kilmer.   Tim and Miriam also did Samanthra (the Sacred Harp piece) Sunday night, which, as they pointed out, works remarkably well with just 2 voices.

There are more in Allan-a-Dale but they were not in the song at Getaway.   I was in it for about 15 years, but haven't been in it for quite a while.

Thanks to you, Genie, for recording and for being as diligent as you are tracking down participants and copyright issues.

Kendall, I think it would be great if we could set up a high-quality audio and video recording system for the Getaway concerts.

It would be great to have zoom-in ability on the video and be able to maybe input the sound directly from the pre-amp of the sound board instead of picking up the sound via the speakers.   It would be even better to have separate tracks for the various instruments, vocal mics, and performers.

Meanwhile, as my thread title suggests, I think there's a real value in having the videos even if there are some glitches in the recording logistics.   In many ways, the Getaway concerts are 'not ready for prime time' (although some acts are); people forget lyrics, start over, etc., and some of us are rank amateurs and mediocre singers or instrumentalists; the audience singing (or, especially, whistling) along sometimes enhances the musical quality, sometimes detracts from it. But it's about sharing music together and encompassing folks at many different levels.   I don't feel bad about some performances being less than perfect and I'd rather have an imperfect recording than none at all.   (I can well understand why not everyone wants their performance or its video to be widely disseminated, though. And why some do, even if there were glitches.)

The thing is, the issues are not just with the recording setup. I've gotten some quite nice audio and video recordings at Getaway (and in other venues) using exactly the same laptop and video software in the past. (The static thing is a recent development, that started after I'd been using this MacBook and iMovie for over two years; I just haven't been able to trace the source of the problem until recently and plan to get it fixed later this month.)

Here are a few examples of what I think are very nice sound quality videos I've made with this equipment.

Sons Of Liberty - Big Mick in Peace Cabin Getaway 2008

Bobert, Lonesome EJ & Leadfingers at Getaway concert 2008   This is on stage, amplified, recorded from about the same distance as at this year's concerts.

Bobert's Blues Band 2 - Peace Cabin - Getaway 2008 no amp

Kossoy Sisters in Getaway concert 10-5-2008   recorded with the same equipment I used this year, from about the same distance

Leadfingers in Getaway concert 2008 - "The Folker"   video is thumbnail (so it's blurry) but audio unaffected; Recorded the same way I recorded the others in that concert

Zephyrs Of Heaven (jam session recording)

Wreck Of The Bay Rupert - Shanghaied On The Willamette at Singtime Frolics 2009
no mics or amps; recorded from about 8-10 feet away (The song starts about 1/3 of the way through the video)

"Mineral Wells" - Frank Jones at Common Grounds Coffee House unamplified, recorded from just a few feet away, Jan. 2009

San Antonio Rose - Genie no amp directly on guitar; my playing is sloppy but the recording picked up the guitar sound very true-to-life

Froggy Went A-Courtin' - from this year's Getaway concert Sound pretty good on instruments and voices (though there is static in places)

Lots of things affect how the audio (in particular) will come out. People differ in their mic technique, their vocal and instrumental volumes, etc., and all the sound is coming out of the same speakers (as well as being live in the room). Dennis had his hands full trying to adjust sound levels for all the different voices and instruments in real time, too. So sometimes some voices or instruments in a duo or group came out louder and clearer than others. For the most part, that wasn't because of the hardware or software on my MacBook (although I do think it may tend to pick up high notes better than really low notes, and I DK if there's an input adjustment for that.)

But you're right about the 12-string, Kendall.   The video doesn't capture its sound nearly as well as it does Jacqui's voice.

I have a Tascam Neo 2488 that I can bring and hook up, if Dennis is willing. That would give you a first rate digital recording to sync up with your video recording. In fact, we could burn CD's on the spot for those that wanted them. Maybe tack a nominal charge on for the CD's and contribute it to the scholarship fund.

all the best,

Mick

Wow, Mick, genius. I enjoy the set of CDs from my first Getaway, and Genie's videos. We can (and I certainly do!) purchase CDs that are studio quality. To me, Genie is right, just the aid to memory is wonderful, bringing it all back. (And having this video won't make me hesitate to grab your CD when you have recorded 'There Will Be Music' which is my new theme song; I hope to spread it to other singers too once you have recorded it. Beautiful.)

We have dearly departed, and fondly remembered, friend Rick Fielding to thank for that song. He introduced me to Rick Speyer, and that is where I found that song. In fact, Rick, in our last conversation on this good earth (we still "talk" regularly....chuckle) challenged me to use the opportunities I have been so fortunate to have, and record these songs of folks that might not otherwise get out there. Rick Speyer's name was one of the first he said. That song has become my own theme song as well. I am going to make it the title track on one of the two projects that I hope to complete this year.

I don't know why I never thought to bring the Tascam before, but let's see if we can get it done next year.

Mick

Hey, Genie: I am deeply appreciative of all you're doing. While it would be nice to have more professional quality videos, I thought the whole spirit of the Getaway was sitting around, singing and enjoying each other without a lot of emphasis on "performing." Or maybe I'm wrong. Once you start worrying about performing, it changes the whole atmosphere.

My friend here on Mudcat, Dan O'Connell, graciously set up a website for me, for which I am deeply indebted. He posted several videos of songs that I did with my buddy Art Thieme, back in the '80's. In the Handful of Songs video I forget one of the verses and look rather stupid. Duh! But then, it's all a matter of perspective. I didn't ask him to remove it, even though I really blow one verse. I thought it made me look charmingly vulnerable and human. :-)

Now, everyone can go to my websight at http://www.jrasmussen.net and see me really mess up the song. So be it. It won't be the last time I make a major mistake.

Thanks so much for posting the videos, Genie. I really appreciate you.

The videos are wonderful...and there are also some of Barry Finn recorded by Amos which I absolutely treasure! (I'm not sure as I type if you did one of Barry, Genie.)

We should not get to the point where we 'demand' this amount of technology, however. It is largely a volunteer matter, and does require some careful planning and 'space' for equipment setup. It would not do to have concerns over 'getting everything recorded' override the flow of the event. Those lovely recordings are a bonus, but not essential.

(I remember taking my first BETA VCR to the Smithsonian festival many years ago, and realizing that there was an awkward struggle for prime vantage points by those with cameras and recorders.)

I have at least 2 of Barry in the Peace Cabin in 2008 and one of him in the Sunday night concert that year.   Amos's video of Barry doing "Banks Of The Callow" in a workshop last October is also up at You Tube and came out very well.
You can find all of these by searching for "Barry Finn" at You Tube under "Music." It also helps to add either "FSGW Getaway" or "Mudcatter" to the search if you're getting too many extraneous listings.

As for recording quality, I think the camcorders that people like Amos and Tinker use do a fine job, and they have zoom capability so the images often come out clearer. But I DK if they have enough memory to record a whole 2+-hour concert, and it would help if they were tripod mounted too for recording the concert.

Thanks, Mike.   All I needed to process your video was the song title. The sound on your song is a bit staticky, and it's not all due to your hoarseness, but the song and your delivery are well worth hearing nonetheless.

Mick, I like the idea of using the Tascam audio recorder.   Some of the footage I took in 2008 survived the crash of my hard drive only as thumbnail videos - meaning the image is blurry if you enlarge it beyond a few square inches - but the sound quality was not affected so I still got some good mp3s of the songs.   I'd much rather have that than "silent movies" of people playing instruments and singing.   And it's a good backup to any video recording.

I know it's possible to synchronize separate audio and video files, but I think it's tricky and may result in some videos that are out of sync in places.

BTW, as far as making CDs of the concert audio goes, let's remember that we'd need advance signed releases from the performers and, at least in some cases, the songwriters too.

Hope you can get that one up.   Some of us (me, to pick a purely theoretical example) who weren't able to be at the Saturday concert would love to hear how the horn and ukulele turned out.   I've heard good reports--Dick for instance.

Here's Lisa Null: Roll, Big Sandy, Roll

Martha Burns - Railroading On The Great Divide

Re recording procedures and toys, here are some illustrations of when the 'cheap' do-it-yourself stuff works and when it doesn't so much:

La Prelles -Getaway 2009 unplugged - Old Blind Bartelmas Sound and image great!
singing unamplified, close to Amos's camcorder

Steve Cormier Getaway 2009 "Old Tipperary" - unamplified in workshop, hard to hear because the camcorder isn't very close?

Rita Ferrara Getaway 2009, "Santa Lucia" - sound is a bit faint because camcorder not close by, but she sounds good.
(Amos demonstrates why those holding the camcorder or nearby shouldn't sing along if you want the performer's voice to be the focal point.)

I support Big Mick's suggestion of patching in a recorder to the Dennis Cook's board (with appropriate adapters). That should be better than any recorder located in the audience, which would pick up any sound in the immediate vicinity such as applause, scraping chairs, commentary, coughs and wheezes, shuffling papers, and choruses or refrains. The feed from the board would still not be as good as a studio recording but good enough to listen to if the performer were doing a good job.

Some inexperienced performers have a tendency to "roam" in the vicinity of the mic or to ignore it altogether!

It would also help if someone experienced monitored the recorder. Dennis has enough to do monitoring what people should be hearing in the hall.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

That's what I've been thinking, Charley. The problems with recording "through the air" are that a) the sound can be clear or mushy depending on where your input mic is in relation to the speaker(s)* and b) ambient noise - including the audience singing along, chairs scooting, papers rustling - gets picked up too.   In fact, ideally, the camcorder or laptop that is recording the video would have a direct audio line in from the sound board's pre-amp.   That way no one would have to fiddle with the sync between the audio and video.

As for monitoring the recorder, video-wise, I don't know how feasible it is to monitor the audio input on hand-held camcorders or on laptops with built-in camcorders.   It's easy to see what the video image will be like on a laptop because it's a WYSIWIG sort of thing; with a tripod mounted camcorder you'd have to sit or stand behind it, which might or might not block the view for some of the audience. Anyway, there should be a way to do this if TPTB at Getaway know decide in advance to try to have the concert recorded.

*I think the difference in general sound quality of my videos from 2008 and 2010 illustrate this. The mic (on the laptop) was positioned almost exactly the same, in relation to the performers, both years, but the stage was configured differently, with the speakers much farther apart in 2008. I think I captured more of the sound of the live voices and instruments, relative to the amplified sound, in 2008 because the speakers were farther away.

I still need the song titles and song credits (preferably with copyright dates where applicable) for several of the performances at the Getaway concerts. I like to include these as captions on the videos, in case people share the videos without the accompanying blurbs.

These include:

- title of Micca's whaling song and copyright date
- title of Vince Wilding's ballad (which I think is "trad")
- Title of David Ingerson's Irish song
- title of David Diamond's Do-Re-Mi parody (and did you write the parody lyrics, Dave?)
- author/source of Helen's Ant & Flea (Friendship Loyalty Beyond Death), if known
- title and author of Wendy G's fractured fairytale
- title and credits for the song Jed Marum did with Glyn Collingson

And if you were in the concert and I haven't mentioned your song yet, please send me the title, songwriter credit, etc. - even if I just share the file with you and no one else.

Thanks

I'm hoping that next year we'll have some sort of release & credits form for all concert participants to sign when they sign up (or at the concerts).   Performers could deny permission to share (or keep) the recording, permit limited sharing (e.g., only by making it available to the performers themselves, who could then distribute it), or allow sharing via YouTube, etc.   And they would also write down their names, song titles & credits, etc.

That would save a lot of hassle after the fact.

Thanks, Bill. (I take it ToneDeaf Dave wrote the parody lyrics, right?)

Here's the video of the French Horn and Uke duet:

Fred Sailer and Dottie Hurley: Mozart Horn Concerto No. 3, Second Movement

I think the sound came out pretty good on that one. That's partly because the French horn is a pretty loud instrument and the mic picked up a its sound directly.

Again, it illustrates how the variations in sound quality are not all due to the recording equipment and its quirks. There are many factors.

I've located the source of the static and other glitches in my MacBook's recording and, with my built-in mic and camera and laptop fan having been replaced, my recording quality should be back to normal (which has been quite good in most settings - if I adjust the input settings right). The camera didn't need replacing but I think it's all one unit. But the fan and the mic were misbehaving (See the thread about problems with iMovie -- which didn't turn out to be the source of the problems.)

Anyway next time I record live music I should get much better sound than I did earlier this fall.

One thing that will speed up the process is if everyone will tell me - preferably by posting in this thread - the titles and authorship credits for the songs/poems/stories they did in the concert, including publication/copyright dates, if known. Also let me know if you want to be identified some other way than by your name (e.g., if you want to be "LeadFingers" or "M.Mario" instead of your actual name).

And a reminder: if you performed in the first half of the Saturday night concert, your video came out as a silent movie. I've since replaced the neurotic built-in mic on my laptop, so now it's back to doing normal sound - in some cases really good (though it depends a lot on things like how close your instrument was to the mic, in the case of guitars).   But I did lose out on the sound for those first 10-15 performers.   Let me know if you'd like to see your "silent movies" anyway. (Overdubbing is not that hard if you have the right software, such as iMovie, by the way.)
