I don't know how many people on here know Gary. Not many I expect as, although he did post occasionally, he pretty much kept himself to himself.

It is with great regret that I announce his passing. A stalwart of Swinton Folk Club and an essential member of the Swinton Hardy Intrepid Trekking Society (Read the initials!) he passed away this morning aged only 52. He was out with us at Ribblehead in February this year and on fine form. In April he began to feel unwell and in early July was diagnosed with Oesophageal Cancer. They tried chemotherapy but it made matters worse and the aggressiveness of the cancer became obvious when, during the last week, we found out he had only weeks to live. It became worse and the possible weeks turned to days and then quickly became a matter of hours.

I was lucky enough to be able to see him before he passed away and, even in his very weakened condition, he retained some of the sense of humour that showed though in his (in)famous renditions of "Me and Julio" and "Dolly Parton's Tits"! I have clips of him singing both at Horton in Ribblesdale in February 2006 and I hope to post them somewhere as tribute to a fine man and wonderful friend.

He leaves behind his Mum and Dad and his wife, Bernie, who are understandably heartbroken, as well as countless friends who will miss him greatly. I just feel numb at the moment although I can honestly say it was a great privilege and even greater pleasure to have been counted amongst those friends. I will post more details when I have them.

Rest in Peace, Gary.

Dave.

David,

I've just heard from an old colleague at BOC of Gary's passing and found your obituary.

I worked with Gary many years ago in the Computer Operations team at BOC and was also at Moorside Secondary School with him in the 70's. It's a real shock to hear the news and my sympathies go out to you, all his friends and family.

Rest in peace Gary.

Graham.

Sorry to hear this, Dave. Do you have a picture of Gary? I'm sorry I don't remember his name.

Must be a great loss to the club.

Sorry to hear that DtG, not sure whether I met him or not.
I was lucky, had a heart attack at 52 but survived.

Hi Dave,

I can understand the pain we get when we loose a good friend. I had worked with Gary Wright in 2010. I came to UK from India for some official work at BOC. I met Gary there and we had a good time. In Jan 2010. I returned back to India and after few months I heard about this. I felt very very bad and I still miss him. Though I had spent few days with him at office but I can say he is the best colleague I had ever worked with. I will never forget the time we had enjoyed there. May god bless his family..

Regards,
Bharat Prasad

I missed the reposnses - Sorry all but I can now thank you for them and for your kind thoughts. It was just over a year ago that Gary passed away and it is still difficult to believe. It is the Swinton Festival this weekend and last year it was too close to his passing to really sink in. But this time we will miss him terribly. I just hope someone will sing "Me and Julio" and that we can toast him with his favourite drink - Lemon Merangue:-) (Glen Morangie - You had to be there!)

Sadly his Mum passed away during the year but it was not unexpected and she had been in poor health for a long time. Bernie and Gary's Dad have been a great comfort to each other and although his loss is still felt very keenly it is a comfort to them both that friends are thinking of them.

I don't have any pictures to share but I still hope to put the footage I have of him at the Ribblehead do. Bernie watched it with trepidation but when she saw him and the rest of us motley crew she said she could not help but laugh along. I will get round to posting it somewhere - Probably YouTube - when I can get my bum in gear and do somthing constructive!

Still missing him. Thanks for your thoughts.

Dave.

2 years have now passed and he is still deeply missed. I am off to the folk club tonight and, hopefully will be able to convince someone to do one of the favourites . If all else fails I can sing Dolly Parton's Tits unaccompanied :-)

Thinking of Bernie and the family and friends at this time, as always.

Dave

Shock and horror! I thought the best way to commemorate Gary's passing was to have a 'Lemon Meringue' or two. But they had none :-( So I had a large Grouse. In more ways than one.
