Hi, I am trying to find some history on this tune. I was told that the tune was written by Gow about a fiddle, not about his deceased wife. Wiki info says otherwise. If anybody has some info on this I'd sure appreciate it.

sb

It's 'Niel', not 'Neil' and Wikipedia is right:

Niel married Margaret Urquhart from Perth in 1768, and they went on to share a happy married life until she died in 1805. Niel was deeply hurt by her death, and stopped playing the fiddle for a while. His friends finally convinced him to pick it up again, and the first thing he played was his '...Lament for the Death of his Second Wife'

It would certainly be an odd title for a piece about a fiddle....
