I just wandered if there are any other verses to this song the origins are unknown to me

Iwanted to go on the stage
well soon my ambition was gotten
as i stared down on the audience
through the hole in the elephant bottom

It's dark and as damp as the mines
the smell it is putrid and rotten
but you don't expect O de Cologne
from the hole in the elephant bottom

hitler invaded with planes
he had great big bombs and he dropped them
some ran for the shelters, I know where I ran
up the hole in the elephant bottom

there's pockets all round the insides
for bottles of brown if yo got them
the audience laughs when I blow off the froth
through the hole in the elephants bottom

I courted a fair pretty maid
my mates they say she will drop em
but when she did it was nearly as big
as the hole in the elephants bottom

The last verse seems a bit barrack room and might have been added later.

The Hole In The Elephant's Bottom

My ambition's to go on the stage
And now you can see that I've got on.
In the pantomime I am engaged
To play the elephant's bottom.

Now the girls all think that I'm it
When they sit in the stalls I can spot 'em
And I wink at the ones in the pit
Through the hole in the elephant's bottom.

Now this part doesn't have any words
There is nothing that can be forgotten
I spend all my time pushing property turds
Through the hole in the elephant's bottom.

One day we played in a farce
And they stitched up the backside with cotton
It split and showed all of me bum
Through the hole in the elephant's bottom.

One day two queers came in
On the stage before anyone could stop 'em
But they gave me a lovely bouquet
Through the hole in the elephant's bottom.

The manager said 'That's all wrong!'
As they sit in the stage you could spot 'em
So I use a telescope now
Through the hole in the elephant's bottom.

My landlady packs up my meals
One day I went out and forgot 'em
So now every day she feeds me with buns
Through the hole in the elephant's bottom.

There are pockets inside of the cloth
For some bottles of beer if you've got 'em
But they hiss and they boo if I blow out the froth
Through the hole in the elephant's bottom.

Now the fellow who plays the front part
As an actor he is simply rotten
Through bad beer he does nothing but fart
While I play the elephant's bottom.

Some people may think this song good
Others may think that it's rotten
Those who don't like it can just push their nose
Up the whole of an elephant's bottom.

I wanted to go on the stage
My ambition I've finally begotten
Now in pantomime I'm all the rage
As the hole in the elephant's bottom

I was walking one day down the strand
When their Majesties I happened to spot 'em
And I felt so grand when I shook the King's hand
Thro' the whole in the elephant's bottom

This is nearly the end of this song
Its as different as cheese is from charcoal
If you don't like the prose you can go stick your nose
Up the hole in etc ......

Lots of variations on the verses others have listed, and a few I've not heard before

Is this sung to a known melody, or does it have a tune of its own?
Seems like some nice person should record this and post it on YouTube...

I've got an audio recording of Archie Tawney singing this a few years ago (his younger brother was Cyril). If anyone would like it, please PM me.

John Cherry ex of Beverley, now of York (Black Swan) was the chief exponent of this one in our neck of the woods.

A lady she walked up to me,
She said, "You're a star, I can spot 'em",
I said, "No madam, thanks, I'm not Douglas Fairbanks,
I'm the hole in the elephant's bottom."

Steve Gardham is too modest (or has perhaps grown too old to remember) that the British Sound Library contains his recording of John Cherry singing the song HERE

I first heard this being sung by the late Pete Mcgovern in Liverpool and picked up the additional verses along the way ever since.
A great song and one always able to get an audience singing

'Our' first verse is;

I wanted to go on the stage
But my acting it really was rotten
But at pantomime I'm all the rage
As the hole in the elephants bottom.

Here's my version, learnt in the 60s from a Sussex singer:

I wanted to go on the stage,
But the parts that they gave me were rotten
In pantomime I was the rage
As the hole in the elephant's bottom
tra-la-la la la la (twice)

The inside is lined up with shelves
For bottle of bass if you've got 'em
But the audience ain't partial to me blowing the froth
Out the hole in the elephant's bottom

Now me landlady makes sandwiches for me
But one day I forgot 'em
Halfway through the matinee they passed 'em on a tray
Up the hole in the elephant's bottom

Now some people sends me fan mail
And others they sends me a parcel
The postman delivers 'em care of the stage
And the hole in the elephant's bottom

If the Russians should ever attack
With their megaton bombs and they drops 'em
You can keep you fallout shelters
I know where I'll be
Up the hole in the elephant's bottom.

Now some people won't like this song
Others may think that's it's rotten
But them as don't like it can go stuff their heads
Up the hole in the elephant's bottom.

Sheer poetry!

Tradsinge

Geoff,
Senility, not modesty!

There were two little kids in the stalls,
And I could have cheerfully shot 'em,
Thoughout the whole show they kept blowing dried peas
At the hole in the elephant's bottom

We played for the Royal Command,
Their majesties, I could just spot 'em,
And the National Anthem sounds grand
Through the hole in the elephant's bottom

And for historic interest only:

Let Bush invade if he will,
His bombs and his shells he can drop 'em,
When Saddam finds shelter I know where he'll go,
Through the hole in the elephant's bottom.
