Subject: RE: Folk Singers who Have Died From: MGM·Lion Date: 15 Jan 16 - 07:36 AM Checked back on this old thread to research something. Feel moved to add one of my favourite quotations, tho it comes from a book which overall I do not greatly care for -- Laurence Sterne's 'Tristram Shandy', 1759-67: "We had a fat, foolish scullion ... Master Bobby is dead, said Obadiah; he is certainly dead! –– So am not I, said the foolish scullion." Not so foolish that time, IMO. And so am not I! ≈M≈ But who is to add since last entry nearly two years ago? |
Subject: RE: Folk Singers who Have Died From: PHJim Date: 24 Feb 14 - 10:22 PM If I see a thread that doesn't interest me I find it easy to just not click on it, but go on to something that does catch my interest. If it doesn't appeal, move on to something else. Obviously, some folks are interested. |

These have all been around in my lifetime, and were all Great. |
Subject: RE: Folk Singers who Have Died From: GUEST,Natalie J Date: 13 Jul 12 - 09:29 PM It has been fascinating reading this thread. Some thought it was a farce and didn't take it seriously. Those of us who were folkies before the folk music revival happened regard names of the deceased with tremendous interest. After all, they were folks we listened to and some of them in person, and we loved traditional folk music heart and soul. It was our very life. I said once that I would never read the newspaper obituaries (sounded so morbid), but I now do that quite regularly. If I see someone I know (knew), I read the entire obit. The rest of you may realize this when you are old and gray. What surprises me are those reported as gone who were a lot younger than me, I thought. |

Subject: RE: Folk Singers who Have Died From: Stringsinger Date: 03 Jun 12 - 07:10 PM Please include Win Stracke and Archie Green in this list. They were both important. I think that this thread is motivated by the fact that we lost one of the greatest of all, Doc Watson, recently. This mass obituary emphasizes that it's important to keep the tradition of folk music alive in whatever way we can since many of the former carriers of the tradition have passed. Is John Herald still alive? Or John Stewart with the KT? Pete Seeger is ninety-two strong and as Springsteen has said, he has "outlived the bastards" such as McCarthy and his detractors. America's "tuning fork" is still resonant. |

Subject: RE: Folk Singers who Have Died From: GUEST,Booklynrose Date: 03 Nov 10 - 03:26 PM I started reading this thread because I'm still reeling from 2009 when we lost a LOT of folk singers. Already mentioned were Sandy Paton, Mike Seeger & Mary Travers who all died last year. I did not see the names of Bess Lomax Hawes, Richie Schulberg, Mary LaMarca, Susan Contento (in NYC)who died last year. I'm also going to drift from the thread's focus to share my pleasure that three singers who seemed desperately ill in December 2009 are still with us, Jean Ritchie, Jerry Epstein, & Ray Fisher. |

Subject: RE: Folk Singers who Have Died From: Genie Date: 03 Nov 10 - 02:31 AM I was going to include Woody and even Hank Williams (yes, he's thought of as "country," but an awful lot of folk singers do his songs all the time). Woody would've been almost 99 if he were alive, though, but Hank would be just 87, so maybe I should have included him. |
Subject: RE: Folk Singers who Have Died From: BrooklynJay Date: 03 Nov 10 - 02:14 AM I was always under the impression that Old Man Mose was a name from a song title. (I remember that Louis Armstrong, Betty Hutton, and Manhattan Transfer - among others - recorded it.) And somehow, both Big Lists managed to omit Woody Guthrie! (Though he was mentioned in an earlier post in this thread.) |

Subject: RE: Folk Singers who Have Died From: Genie Date: 01 Nov 10 - 10:41 PM Miskin Man, Thanks for doing the alphabetized list. But I don't see Kate Wolf's name on it, or Stan Rogers's either. I'd also add Jill Jackson Miller, who co-wrote "Let There Be Peace On Earth" with Sy Miller, whom she later married. Not sure if they're considered "folk," but I guess it depends on how broadly you define "folk." I would also add Miriam Makeba to the list. |
Subject: RE: Folk Singers who Have Died From: BrooklynJay Date: 01 Nov 10 - 06:29 AM And several names on the list were bogus or jokes. Old Man Mose and Poor Howard, for example (song lyrics). And names like Hugh Jarse, or Mike Hunt...well, I think you can figure it out. |

I didn't know her well, only distantly as a critic gets to know a performer generally; but I am oddly sad to find that someone I knew at all has been dead for all this time without my knowing. Subject: RE: Folk Singers who Have Died From: Don Firth Date: 17 Oct 10 - 02:24 PM One of the Biggies in the Pacific Northwest, who died almost exactly two years ago. Stan James. CLICKY. Scroll down. Great pictures of Stan in action, most taken by Sally Ashford. One photo is a street scene (a bit fuzzy), including Walt Robertson and Merritt Herring, both of whom are no longer with us. Further down is a photo taken of the "grand finale" of the Seattle Coffeehouse Reunion ("Geezer's Concert") at the 2003 Northwest Folklife Festival. Not everyone who sang in the coffeehouses during the late 50s and through the 60s were there. Some live in other parts of the country, and some have passed on. There are some great song fests going on Somewhere. . . . Don Firth |

Subject: RE: Folk Singers who Have Died From: MGM·Lion Date: 17 Oct 10 - 05:41 AM What is Mr Smith doing killing off Pete Seeger [note spelling], please? Amos's question is of course a most pertinent one. Dealing only with people I have met, let's take as an example Harry Cox. If he wasn't dead, he would be 125 years old. Peter Bellamy, on the other hand, would only be 66, Sandy Denny 63, &c. But Alex Campbell 85. So where did OP envisage the parameters being set? Has Isla Cameron been mentioned? Or Dominic Behan? ~Michael~ |

Subject: Folk Singers who Have Died From: GUEST,Guest - Lindy Date: 17 Oct 10 - 02:10 AM I'm trying to come up with a list of well known or fairly well known folk singers that I can think of who have passed away. For the purpose of this thread I am only looking for artists who were primarily involved with folk or considered a folk singer although they may have played other music during their career. 1). Sandy Denny 2). Tim Hart 3). Jim Croce 4). Kate Wolf 5). Mary Travers (of Peter, Paul & Mary) 6). Stan Rogers 7). Mimi Farina-Baez (Joan Baez's younger sister) 8). John Denver 9). Dan Fogelberg 10).Odetta 11).Kate McGarrigle 12).Eva Cassidy 13).John Martyn 14).John Stewart 15).Harry Chapin These are 15 names that came to mind right away but I know there are more folkies that have left us. |
