Old Blind____ (fill in the blank with your choice), the blues player.

Hardtack Bob, Focslehead Fred, Billy Buntline and ten thousand other chanters of sea chanties.

Plowmen without number, tinkers and soldiers and spirited maids from a hundred races. All greatly missed, too.

One of the Biggies in the Pacific Northwest, who died almost exactly two years ago. Stan James.

CLICKY.

Scroll down. Great pictures of Stan in action, most taken by Sally Ashford. One photo is a street scene (a bit fuzzy), including Walt Robertson and Merritt Herring, both of whom are no longer with us.

Further down is a photo taken of the "grand finale" of the Seattle Coffeehouse Reunion ("Geezer's Concert") at the 2003 Northwest Folklife Festival.

Not everyone who sang in the coffeehouses during the late 50s and through the 60s were there. Some live in other parts of the country, and some have passed on.

There are some great song fests going on Somewhere. . . .

Don Firth

Did I miss something, or -- incredibly -- has Dave Van Ronk, one of the revival's towering figures, not been mentioned? What about Paul Clayton? The Clancy Brothers? Bill Monroe? Lester Flatt? These aren't exactly obscure people.

Meantime, living performers get listed, along with some musicians who can't be called folk by any definition. Weird.

On the Vanity of Earthly Greatness

The tusks which clashed in mighty brawls
Of mastodons, are billiard balls.

The sword of Charlemagne the Just
Is Ferric Oxide, known as rust.

The grizzly bear, whose potent hug,
Was feared by all, is now a rug.

Great Caesar's bust is on the shelf,
And I don't feel so well myself.

Allan s. Thanks for correcting me re. Tom Paley. I had heard many years ago that he had died, but never followed it up--it's great to know he's still alive and performing.

One very obscure deceased folk singer who was an incredible guitarist, songwriter, singer, and entertainer was a fellow named John Antle, who used to play around the Edmonton Folk Club in the early 1970's, and then around Toronto. He also apparently played in folk clubs in San Francisco. Is anybody familiar with him?

Cass Elliott (sp?)

John and Michelle Phillips

Jim Croce

(Yeah, I know they moved on to other genres and/or are kind of hard to classify, but they all were folkies at some point or some of their music fits the "folk" category.)

It would be nice to have a searchable database of deceased Folkies, with a short biography, link to a photo, discography, etc. However I suppose that would mean a considerable outlay on someone's part.

Someday....

It'd be good to have a list of dead folkies that was woefully inaccurate and full of people who have nothing to do with folk music, some of whom are still alive, I think.
