To GUEST, Jason & LauraUK

An chuid eile i Síochána.

The (appreciated) effort to include an Irish version of "Rest in Peace" is rather negated by the vagaries of machine translation. The most common Irish equivalent expression is "Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis". Literally translates as May his faithful soul be at the right hand of God..

Best wishes.

I will really miss Peter. Every year when we visited Ireland we would catch him at the Roisin in Gurteen or at Gerry Murray's in Charlestown. Over the year I got to know him and he always would have a pint with me. He will be missed.

We were saddened to hear of this great man's passing. We had the great fortune to meet him on two occasions, both in the Roisin Dubh, Gurteen, where he was playing live.

The world has lost one of the greatest traditional Irish musicians there ever was. We know for a fact he will now be playing many reels with the great Michael Coleman and Fred Finn in the music hall in the sky!

God bless, Peter. An chuid eile i Síochána.

Words hardly express the feeling of loss, though I know Peter lived his life to the fullest. He was a great and generous mentor and a man who indeed was one of "...the Merry". I had the great fortune of spending 42 evenings with him (of the 49 days I was in Ireland in '93 on an Canada Arts Council study grant), and it was one of the great seminal times in my life. There are many that learned at his side; he has done more than his job in keeping traditional music, the memory of Coleman's heritage, and simply great flute playing alive and well and carried into the future. And he was great craic as many, many know, from Sligo, to the Catskills, to Goderich, Ontario. We have the our stories and we have the tunes. thanks Peter.

Left Gurteen this morning (Sunday). Only learned of his death when I got back to Dublin. A real link with the Coleman tradition has been lost with Peter's passing. At least he will now get to play some more tunes with Fred Finn and Tom McGowen.

Sad to report that great South Sligo musician Peter Horan passed away this morning 17th October.

Peter Horan (born 1926, Killavil,County Sligo) was an Irish flute and fiddle player who was known for having developed a unique style influenced by the local irish fiddling tradition. For nearly 30 years performed as a duet with the famous fiddler Fred Finn. More recently he performed with Sliabh Luachra fiddler Gerry Harrington and the pair released a CD called "Fortune Favors the Merry," accompanied by Ollie Ross on the piano. He continued to perform and teach in Ireland and at Irish arts festivals around the world, including the Catskills Irish Arts Week and the Ennis Trad Festival. In 2002 he was given the Irish Music Awards Hall of Fame award. In 2009, St. Angela's College Sligo and NUI Galway recognised and honoured Peter as one of South Sligo's most talented and best known traditional musicians by awarding him an Honorary Master of Music. For "His authentic, natural style, which is firmly rooted in the Coleman tradition, stands out as a unique musical talent and resource within our region and our country.. . ." Peter Horan died on 17th of October 2010 in the North West Hospice, Sligo
