Subject: Dancing America Rapper Tournament From: Wheatman Date: 17 Oct 10 - 03:21 PM Oh Boy, after a truly dynamic longsword tournament in Grenoside this week end, we are really looking forward to D.A.R.T. in Boston USA next week end. The three English teams taking part will have their work cut out but I am sure they will deliver a result. Might get a bit of singing in as well. |
Subject: RE: Dancing America Rapper Tournament From: GUEST Date: 17 Oct 10 - 04:19 PM Fantastic. Who is going from the UK? And when is it? |

Subject: RE: Dancing America Rapper Tournament From: pdq Date: 17 Oct 10 - 05:49 PM What a relief to know what this really. The title suggest that Brits are gathering to dance with vile stink noise Rappers like Snoop Eats Dog Poop and Stinkeye Fatty and the L.A. Mutha Fukka boys. |
Subject: RE: Dancing America Rapper Tournament From: Wheatman Date: 17 Oct 10 - 07:11 PM Rapper dancing was around long before rapp. being a Traditional Dance from the north east of England that uses flexible strips of steel in the performance. Originally performed by the miners of Northumberland and Durham or are you winding me up pdq? Take a look at the website. |
Subject: RE: Dancing America Rapper Tournament From: pdq Date: 17 Oct 10 - 08:32 PM I was relieved to find out what it was. I did check out the website and it looks like fun. Just a question. There is a character named Rapper Brown in a Ewan MacColl song. Do you know the derivation of that name? |
Subject: RE: Dancing America Rapper Tournament From: katlaughing Date: 17 Oct 10 - 08:55 PM I don't think pdq was winding you up: over here, common assumption is that "rappers" are indeed singer/rhymer/dancers who can be controversial and/or quite positive, Queen Latifah comes to mind, but nothing like what DART is about. I, too, was wondering WTH when I first saw the thread title.:-) I hope they put up some vids. on youtube as I would really enjoy seeing it. |
Subject: RE: Dancing America Rapper Tournament From: AllisonA(Animaterra) Date: 17 Oct 10 - 09:00 PM Oh, man, and I'll be at a workshop all day and into the evening right across the river in Boston! Wish I could be there! |
Subject: RE: Dancing America Rapper Tournament From: katlaughing Date: 17 Oct 10 - 09:10 PM Me, too, Animaterra, esp. if THIS GROUP will be there. WOW!! |
Subject: RE: Dancing America Rapper (swords) Tournament From: Wheatman Date: 18 Oct 10 - 02:27 AM I don't know thw MacColl song Rapper Brown, but in north eastern english the mining term Rap means to either hit the roof or walls of the tunnel to test them for safty by listening to the resultant sound or to Rap on the rails after a roof fall to signal life beyond the fall or to Rap on the winding gear structure to request the cage to go up or down as the case may be. I am sure there are vids. about but I don't think I have time to find then before I pack my bags for the trip. I am sure some one will have then just a click away. Gan canny Brian |

Subject: RE: Dancing America Rapper (swords) Tournament From: LesB Date: 18 Oct 10 - 04:22 AM In Britain Rapper is mostly danced in pubs as shown by the winners of DERT 2010, Newcastle Kingsmen dancing at DERT (Dance England Rapper Tournament). Kingsman DERT 2010 Cheers Les |
Subject: RE: Dancing America Rapper (swords) Tournament From: GUEST,FloraG Date: 18 Oct 10 - 04:26 AM Rapper dance is the rock and roll of morris dancing. I,ve seen it done with a strobe light on stage - very effective. Were all expecting the Olympics committee will have some rapper in the opening ceremony in 2012. Enjoy the festival FloraG |
Subject: RE: Dancing America Rapper (swords) Tournament From: Mitch the Bass Date: 18 Oct 10 - 04:28 AM It just so happens that I'll be visting Boston (from the UK) next weekend. I look forward to seeing the teams. I learnt rapper in 1970 but haven't been an active participant for many years other than occassionally playing for a team. But, living near Derby, I went to this years DERT and met some of the visting US teams. See you all there. Mitch |

Subject: RE: Dancing America Rapper (swords) Tournament From: TheSnail Date: 18 Oct 10 - 05:25 AM There seems to be a bit of confusion between longsword and rapper. |
Subject: RE: Dancing America Rapper (swords) Tournament From: Wheatman Date: 18 Oct 10 - 08:27 AM Mons Meg please accept my apologies, my opening should have read 3 British teams. The differences between longsword and rapper would bore you to tears and cause all sorts of arguments, safe to say longswords are long, most with one handle, and a not so pointy bit. Rappers are shorter, flexible with two handles. I will let the rest of the sword dance union amplify the finer points (yuk) of the differences. Must get back to my packing |
Subject: RE: Dancing America Rapper (swords) Tournament From: Wheatman Date: 18 Oct 10 - 08:33 AM Having just watched the clip of Black Swan at Sidmouth, don't expect all rapper teams to dance will flaming swords. The cuts are bad enough without getting burnt as well |
Subject: RE: Dancing America Rapper (swords) Tournament From: LesB Date: 18 Oct 10 - 08:53 AM But it would cauterise the wound. Cheers Les |
Subject: RE: Dancing America Rapper (swords) Tournament From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 18 Oct 10 - 09:04 AM Hi, Les. Thanks for the link to the Flowerpot performance. I enjoyed it thoroughly, once the chap with the top hat had quieted down. Such intricate patterns, and such athleticism! |
Subject: RE: Dancing America Rapper (swords) Tournament From: Tom - Swords & Songs Date: 18 Oct 10 - 09:15 AM I would just make the point that the reason the Kingsmen were singing Abba in the video above was due entirely to the (ridiculous - in my view) one-off rule that the traditional calling on song from Earsdon could not be performed at DERT 2009. Tom |
Subject: RE: Dancing America Rapper (swords) Tournament From: Wheatman Date: 18 Oct 10 - 09:20 AM I wish I'd have thought of it. |

Subject: RE: Dancing America Rapper (2handledswords) Tournament From: Desert Dancer Date: 18 Oct 10 - 10:44 AM "Rapper Brown" appears in the song known as "Off to Sea Once More" (see MacColl) or "Go to Sea No More", and may or may not have been a real person related to the shipping trades in Liverpool, a "recruiter" of sailors. Naught to do with north English mining or dancing. ~ Becky in Tucson |
