Saturday 6 Looking For A New England 2: The Other Traditions

Presented by fRoots and EFDSS
Last year fRoots magazine, with the support of Arts Council England, put together the much acclaimed Looking for New England CD to showcase the many younger artists taking English traditional music and its influence forwards into the 21st century.
English music has always been an evolving beast, reflecting the many peoples who have come to live here down the centuries and adopting these outside influences at will.
With Adriano Adewale (Brazil), Khyam Allami (Iraq), Andrew Cronshaw & Tigran Aleksanyan (UK/ Armenia), Mor Karbasi (Israel), Krar Collective (Ethiopia), London Bulgarian Choir (Bulgaria/ UK)
7.30 – 11pm, tickets £14 advance (£17 on the door)

Sunday 7 Family Barn Dance

Presented in association with the Friends of Cecil Sharp House
Come and join in with the fun, lively dances from the British Isles. For children of all ages with their parents or carers. Live band and caller. Refreshments available. All adults must be accompanied by children.
3 - 5pm, £5 adults, £3 children, tickets available on the door

Wednesday 10 Hush Baby Hush!

Presented in association with Frances Lincoln Children's Books
Please come and join us for an evening of lullabies from around the world to celebrate the publication of the book of the same name by Kathy Henderson, illustrated by Pam Smy (published by Janetta Otter-Barry at Frances Lincoln). With a few words from Kathy Henderson and lullabies sung by Sam Lee, Sarah-Jane Miller and the Cecil Sharp House Community Choir.
Free, RSVP essential to Fabio Grandi, fabiog@frances-lincoln.com, 020 7284 4009

Thursday 11 Waly Waly on the Ukulele: Ukulele settings of Cecil Sharp music

Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain
Following its sell out shows earlier this year, the all-singing, all-strumming Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain returns to Cecil Sharp House with a specially devised programme of arrangements of tunes collected by Cecil Sharp to celebrate the end of Sharp's 150th birthday year.
8 - 11pm, tickets £17.50 (£15 conc) advance; £20 (£17.50 conc) on the door

Wednesday 17 Folk Rising

Presented by EFDSS and The Magpie's Nest
Following the packed-out events this summer, this is the second series of Folk Rising. A three-part studio concert series presents a sample of the freshest, undiscovered and at times radical music being produced within the indefinable folk tradition. With the burgeoning profile that folk music has achieved in recent years never has there been a showcase opportunity for the periphery musicmakers approaching folk from the 'outside' as well as those from 'within'.
This will be a roulette of a musical experience charting the daring and the dangerous, the wonderful and the weird but above all suggesting how the future of folk will sound.
With Sam Lee and the Gillie Boys, The Staves, Skinny Lister, Tommy McCarth.
8-11pm, tickets £5
Thursday 25 9Bach & Mountain Firework Company

9Bach rework the traditional Welsh folk song, creating a new, stark sound. They blend guitar, voice, harp, harmonium and glockenspiel to create music reminiscent of classic Fairport Convention, Pentangle and even Portishead.
"This brilliant young Welsh indie-folk band led by Lisa Jen Brown's gorgeous vocals take traditional songs and recast them on a spectral, haunting electro sound canvas." The Independent
Mountain Firework Company came together in Brighton over heartache and wine to create what's been described as "gorgeous folk/alt-country pop – equal parts darkness and cheeky humour" and "a unique mix of swamp-folk and alt country blues"
7-11pm, tickets £10

Interesting: "Krar Collective (Ethiopia)"

The "krar" is a traditional stringed instrument combining features of the harp and banjo that is widespread from East to West Africa, north of the Equator.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Hi Old Vermin - we seem to have mislaid our cookie, sorry about that. The regular stuff is all ongoing as well; this is the EFDSS events for November. All events are on the website, but if you're having trouble with it, drop me a line at marketing@efdss.org and I can ask you boring questions about browser and operating system and we can work out what's going on.

mr efdss - is it just me or are there others out there who dislike the flowery language you dropped into. I know how difficult it is to describe a band in words - but surely you can do better than that.

I look back with great gratitude that I was asked to perform at the folk club there.
Thanks, Micca.

Guest, EFDSS - site now loads. Problem perhaps was google-analytics.com being upset by my gmail account. That - the gmail account - had locked me out and needed the password re-set. All too clever? Only website so affected apart from gmail itelf. Eventually cured by yet another re-boot. Thanks for the offer of help.
