Subject: Scanner Info. From: Banjoman_CO Date: 26 Aug 99 - 10:39 AM I bought a my first scanner. Boy, was I excited. But the software that came with it doesn't work very well. Well, not at all really. Is there different 'scanner software' that would do a better job and is compatable with a Mustek 600? Your help is appreciated. Fred |
Subject: RE: Help: Scanner Info. From: MMario Date: 26 Aug 99 - 11:14 AM uhmmmmmm..Fred? It would help answer the queestion if we knew what software CAME with your scanner..... just a thought MMario |
Subject: RE: Help: Scanner Info. From: Peter T. Date: 26 Aug 99 - 11:57 AM MMArio is right. Can you get the thing to work at all? That is, does the software open up and let you scan, and then screws up? Or is it a basic connect problem? Does your machine acknowledge the existence of the scanner in any way? I work with scanners (mostly AGFA), and they can be a bitch to connect to your machine. Since they are externals, you will usually find first that there is some interference with the external port you are trying to use from some other thing you are using it for. Another thing that goes wrong is if you have not got the SCSI number right (this should all be in your manual). I deeply sympathize -- I spent a day or two in hell when I began using mine. to yours, Peter T. |
Subject: RE: Help: Scanner Info. From: katlaughing Date: 26 Aug 99 - 12:23 PM Geez...you're gonna scare of the techno-newbies! I haven't had any problems with my scanner from day one. Not all scanners are created equal nor their software programs!**BG** Newbies: don't listen to that man behind the curtain. repeat after me:
"Scanning can be easy, Okay, Humour Interlude over. carry on technocrats! katlaughing |
Subject: RE: Help: Scanner Info. From: MMario Date: 26 Aug 99 - 01:13 PM not trying to scare the poor man! Honest! I was assuming that the scanner was up and running but he didn't like the way the software worked and/or the results. But without knowing what he is RUNNING, it's VERY hard to even give an OPINION regarding the software...., let alone an informed guess. Last MUSTEK scanner I installed they shipped with software that was totally incompatible with win95. had to wait a month for them to come out with the new drivers. |
Subject: RE: Help: Scanner Info. From: katlaughing Date: 26 Aug 99 - 01:47 PM MMario....I was just kidding, really....I know what a problem that all can be. Up until last year, all I had was an old 386, no MS 95, 98 or even 85!**smile** And, no scanner! Had to know how to think in 'pewter logic to get around to find files, etc. Although, at least we didn't ahve to have hamsters powering us up like BillD and Ferrara! And.....yours was absolutely a legit question. I was mostly teasing PeterT. for his posting! Sorry! kat |

Subject: RE: Help: Scanner Info. From: karen k Date: 26 Aug 99 - 02:57 PM The 1st scanner I bought was a Mustek also. It didn't work and I very quickly returned it and got a Umax Astra 1220P and it has worked fine since day 1. karen k |
Subject: RE: Help: Scanner Info. From: Peter T. Date: 26 Aug 99 - 03:44 PM Sorry, didn't mean to scare anyone. The first scanner I had I desperately wanted, it was going to be wonderful, I had a job due three days later, and I bought it, and was in hell for 1 1/2 days because I couldn't make it work. I did everything. I called up the company, and they were completely useless. Finally, I got it to work with great configuration problems, etc.. It was one reason why I shifted over to Macs shortly thereafter. I felt Banjoman's pain, and rushed in!!!! yours, Peter T. |
Subject: RE: Help: Scanner Info. From: Jen Date: 26 Aug 99 - 03:47 PM Hmm, I have a Mustek, it came with IP Photo Plus, and I've never had any problems with it. Of course, the first computer I ever bought(so excited and everything) was a complete and utter lemon that I had to return... Jen |
Subject: RE: Help: Scanner Info. From: Barbara Shaw Date: 26 Aug 99 - 05:53 PM Banjoman,
I have a Mustek 600 and have it working just fine. I did have a problem in the beginning and sent an e-mail to their website:
Got a response with instructions within a day and the problem was fixed. Something about a conflict between the scanner's cover sensor program and the printer. Their address is No more problems, and the software (iPhotoPlus) is very good for editting scans of photos, once you get them onto the computer. In fact, the results are often better than the original photos. And the textbridge OCR software that also came with it can take a printed document and turn it into a WORD document with minor editting.
I'm amazed at how cheap the scanner was (under $80 I think) and how good the results are. I was planning to buy a digital camera someday, but don't see the need anymore. What's your specific problem and which software/hardware are you having a problem with? |
Subject: RE: Help: Scanner Info. From: katlaughing Date: 26 Aug 99 - 06:50 PM PeterT: I don't think you scared anyone. I was just pulling your leg! We bought an HP computer and at the same time their ScanJet scanner. It has worked like a champ for the past year & half. Does great into several different photo programs, direct to print, to file, etc. katlaughingwithchagrin |
Subject: RE: Help: Scanner Info. From: Susan of DT Date: 26 Aug 99 - 06:58 PM I use presto pagemanager that came with my Umax vistascan two or three years ago. All the modern OCR seems wonderful after what we used on the handscanners in the dark ages. I got a logitec original hand scanner waaay back when they first came out to be abole to scan songs. After you get your scanner properly hooked up, also check your settings. For OCR you don't want the finest dot pattern. Try a few contrast levels and dpi settings. |
Subject: RE: Help: Scanner Info. From: Sandy Paton Date: 26 Aug 99 - 10:01 PM Cyber-klutz that I am, I hooked up a cheap Umax to my Mac SCSI chain and never had any trouble, probably because I ignored the OCR stuff and just went for doing graphics with PhotoShop and QuarkXpress. I've never even installed the OCR program. The Mac, by the way, is not the machine I use to communicate with all you Mudcatters. My Internet connection is via an IBM clone the office machine) running Windows 95. My wife just got a Gateway with Win 95 and a scanner, but I haven't tried it out for OCR stuff yet. The scanner is mostly for making use of "Jaws" - the scanning program by Kurzweil that reads the pages aloud for the vision-impaired in a reasonably pleasant male voice. When I get done with all this production work for the new CDs, I'll have time to experiment with it. Fun and games! Sandy |
Subject: RE: Help: Scanner Info. From: Banjoman_CO Date: 27 Aug 99 - 01:30 AM Sorry guys!! I have been very busy and have not had a chance to get back to this thread. My problem was with the software that came with the Mustek 600. When I installed it, it came up for the Mustek 400 and wouldn't let me access some of the sections of the program. I emailed the tech-service and they sent instructions on how to fix it by removing some of the Twain and Twunk files. I followed their instructions and then nothing worked. I have contacted them again but have not had any reply. Is there some other software that I can use instead of the Mustek software that came with the scanner? Sorry I didn't tell you the exact problem the first time. I not a 'puter nerd'. Please bear with me. Fred |
Subject: RE: Help: Scanner Info. From: Lesley N. Date: 27 Aug 99 - 01:37 AM I agree with Barbara - Textbridge is the best OCR program - a fantastic tool. As for graphics I'm still using the software that came with my HP - since I just scan for the web I don't need the highest resolution... but someday I'm going to play around with scanning photos and some editing software that will take off that 10 (?) pounds the camera adds! |
Subject: RE: Help: Scanner Info. From: deb_page@hotmail.com Date: 27 Aug 99 - 01:45 AM Your scanner program is probably ok (although MMario has a good point). I had similar problems. On the software look for an OCR or TEXTBRIDGE file. You need these to scan the document that will then be saved in a word processing program. Just a thought, good luck. Deb |
Subject: RE: Help: Scanner Info. From: bseed(charleskratz) Date: 27 Aug 99 - 02:13 AM I've got TWO scanners and so I'm twice as 'puter nerdy as you are (and both of them work just fine, thank you--one's a flatbed, the other's for film). Of course I can't get my Zip drive to work and I haven't even tried to connect my sketchpad or my midi keyboard and I have all these goddamned programs I've bought and never used--so "'puter geeky" might be closer to the truth. Whatever it is, I'm double yours (addressed to all challengers for the title). --seed |
Subject: RE: Help: Scanner Info. From: Sandy Paton Date: 27 Aug 99 - 02:28 AM Three 'puters in the house, and I just ordered a fourth! The new one will go down into the studio for editing digitally. I've just got to learn how to use it. No big deal for a whiz kid that can't even proof-read a letter. If I were adequately nerdy, I'd set up a network. But I'm a beginner! You ought to see Duane's collection of old cpu's he's gathered from the roadsides down in Westchester's IBM country. He must have 750 of 'em stacked up and waiting for the application of his genius. Subject: RE: Help: Scanner Info. From: Barbara Shaw Date: 27 Aug 99 - 08:09 AM Sometimes it helps to de-install and then reinstall the whole thing and then re-boot. (Sheesh, I really sound like the techno-breath now.) |
Subject: RE: Help: Scanner Info. From: Banjer Date: 27 Aug 99 - 08:01 PM My Mustek 1200II gave me nothing but a fit when I first brought it home. I tried for two days to make it work. Finally gave in and called the tech cupport folk. Nice youg feller talked me through several procedures and finally getting no results he told me to box it up and take it back for another one. I swapped it out, hooked it up and have been having nothing but good use out of it since. |
Subject: RE: Help: Scanner Info. From: Banjoman_CO Date: 27 Aug 99 - 08:23 PM Thanks for all the help and advise. I no longer feel like the only "puter dummie". Thanks for making me feel at home and 'loved'. I think that I will take the advise that said to pack it all up and return it. This seems like the simplest thing to do. Thanks to all the 'muddies' for your help. Fred |
Subject: RE: Help: Scanner Info. From: Bill D Date: 27 Aug 99 - 10:34 PM well, Mustek seems to be what they give away as part of a computer package deal these days...I'm sure most of them actually DO work, but I sure have heard a lot of negatives...it seems to be the Yugo of the scanner world. We are being VERY careful in what we buy, as we can't afford to do it again in a year...so as we read ads for scanners, digital cameras...(and, yes, new computers that are NOT hamster powered), we try to get a feeling for stuff that will last awhile and be compatible with other stuff...With all the new things coming out, it takes WORK to separate the wheat from the chaff. The most impressive scanner company I've seen so far is Microtek lots of models and prices... |
Subject: RE: Help: Scanner Info. From: Banjer Date: 28 Aug 99 - 08:23 AM Bill, I checked with several of the computer "gurus" that have guided me and they all said that Mustek was "top of the line" in their opinions. Once I got mine operational, I have nothing but good to say for it. |
